Opposition clashes with police and an attempt to seize a television center in Belgrade
Protesters in Belgrade on the eve tried to seize the building of the national television of Serbia (RTS). The demonstrators first threw eggs at the television center building, then blocked two entrances, through which they eventually got inside. Representatives of the opposition forces led by Boshko Obradovic and Dragan Djilas led the action to seize the television center. These people accused the authorities of not allowing them to convey an “alternative point of view” to the public. In one of his speeches Obradovic was extremely frank:
After the opposition occupied the television center building, the police entered and expelled all those who were dissatisfied with the work of Serbian television on the street. In the meantime, the opposition claims that the police used force, resulting in the death of an activist.
In connection with the tense situation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nebojsa Stefanovich addressed the people. According to Stefanovich, the attempt to seize the television center is being investigated. He noted that oppositionists attacked police inside the national television building. Information that one of the opposition members was shot is being checked. Stefanovich noted that the police would firmly stop any illegal provocations.
Meanwhile, the deputy head of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, notes that the opposition deliberately goes into bloodshed, in order to ultimately expose themselves as a victim. Vesich called on the Serbs not to succumb to the provocations of opposition leaders, who are considered to be connected with the West.
Serbian President Alexander Vucic will speak to the people today.
