The Chinese Foreign Ministry protested to the American side over another provocation that took place in the area of the disputed islands of the Xisha Archipelago (Paracel Islands) in the South China Sea. The official representative of the PRC foreign ministry, Lu Kahn, said at a briefing that the American destroyer had entered the waters of the Xisha Islands without permission.
According to the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the US Navy McCampbell missile destroyer without permission entered the water area of Sisha Island, after which the Chinese side sent a warship to that area, which warned the American ship and forced him to leave the island area. China demanded to stop further provocations of American fleet and warned that Beijing reserves the right to take the necessary actions to protect its sovereignty.
In turn, US Navy spokeswoman Rachel McMarr reported that the United States Navy McCampbell missile destroyer was sent to the area of disputed islands as part of the “operation to ensure freedom of navigation” and was held in 12 miles from Xisha. The operation was not directed "against any particular country", but the US Navy will continue sailing in areas of international waters, "challenging excessive maritime demands."
