American farewell
“We really won the IG. We broke them, we broke them very badly, we returned the territory back, and now it's time for our troops to return home, ”the American leader said.
In his usual enthusiastic form, he proclaimed US troops who participated in the hostilities in Syria, "the great American heroes and heroes of the whole world."
As many have already noted, Donald Trump is trying to cover up his, to put it mildly, dubious achievements and ambiguous steps with an abundance of pathos.
However, this decision, if it is, of course, implemented, is one of the few truly correct and informed decisions.
A small American contingent, about two thousand servicemen, trained militants, provided them with logistic, reconnaissance and technical support. In addition, in the north and north-east of Syria there were a number of American MLRS and artillery systems that provided fire support to jihadist gangs from among the “moderate terrorists” and Kurdish separatists. In addition, aircraft operators operated in their ranks.
In addition, the presence of the American military de facto served as a human shield, for example, restricting the possibilities of the actions of the Turkish Armed Forces and the Turkish proxy against the YPG units.
In any case, the withdrawal of American troops illegally occupying the territory of a sovereign state and supporting illegal armed groups acting against the country's legitimate leadership can only be welcomed. Unless, of course, it will take place.
Recall that the American leader and previously raised the issue of the termination of the direct involvement of the US armed forces in the fighting in Syria, inherited from Obama. However, he simply wasn’t given this intention.
However, even now his decision has caused a storm of criticism. 20 December, many American politicians and the military made statements saying that the Trump initiative caught them off guard and could lead to disastrous consequences.
In particular, a number of US senators described the declared withdrawal of the military from Syria as a threat to the US security, stressing that the president’s words about the US victory over the Islamic State are not true.
It is noteworthy that among the critics of Trump was even the Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, who is considered to be considered a supporter of the president. A letter signed by several of his colleagues appeared on his decision page on Twitter, saying that such a move would “give courage” to radical Islamists and Bashar Assad, strengthen the military-political positions of Russia and Iran, and weaken Israel and Washington supported up to now Syrian Kurds.
Graham himself says: "The withdrawal of a few American forces from Syria will be a huge mistake in the style of Obama."
Another senator, Republican Ben Sass, suggested: "Many American allies will be killed if this retreat is carried out." The senator also represents the Republican Party.
Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he “didn’t understand what had happened,” noting that he would wait for clarification from Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Pentagon chief James Mattis, making it clear that Trump himself is not a source worthy of trust. However, this could not be said to humiliate the president. Just recently, his statements are often disavowed by the State Department or the Pentagon. As, for example, it happened with the promises to extradite Fethullah Gulen and support the Turkish operation on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, which Trump gave to Erdogan in the margins of the recent G-20 summit.
Most of the responses of US senators representing both parties regarding the decision of the American leader are sharply negative. Among other things, he is accused of voluntarism. So, Senator Jim Inhof said that Trump should have warned in advance about his decision "if not the entire Senate, then at least the committee on affairs of the armed forces."
Some of the allied United States powers also disapproved of the decision of the American president. For example, on the website of the German Foreign Ministry 20 December, a statement by the head of department Heiko Maas was published, in which he expressed “surprise at the change in the course of the United States in Syria” because, despite the weakening of the IS in Syria, “the threat still exists”. The White House’s decision to withdraw the US military from the republic could be detrimental to the fight against terrorism and jeopardize the results already achieved, explained in the German Foreign Ministry.
Great concern about the current situation in a conversation with the head of the US State Department, Mike Pompeo, was expressed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And many Western media recalled that two weeks before Trump’s announcement of a triumphant “strong defeat” IG, James Mattis noted that in Syria, the US military still faces big challenges, as the backbone of the Islamic State is still active and seeks to regain influence - both in Syria and throughout the region.
Trump's decision triggered a real despondency among militants of Kurdish separatist forces, which, as Sky News Arabia television station reported, called it "a dagger blow in the back." After all, it is obvious that Kurdish separatists alone will not be able to resist the Turkish formations, and they categorically do not want to recognize the sovereignty of Damascus over the North of Syria.
December 20 French Defense Minister Florence Parley said that about a thousand French soldiers, including special forces, based in northern Syria, will remain, in spite of everything, next to the Kurdish forces.
But if we take into account that Turkish proxy not only already engaged in clashes with the Americans, but also forced them to move away from their positions, it can be assumed that they will not stand on ceremony with the French.
Does Trump understand what merges Kurdish separatists, in fact, leaving them no chance? He understands perfectly, but such trifles do not bother him. Recall that Trump raised the question of the deportation of Vietnamese from the United States, including American allies, who fled after the fall of the South Vietnamese regime.
It is obvious that the project of the “Greater Middle East” is not “pulled out”. Strictly speaking, there is no one to carry it out. The IG, although it continues to carry a threat, but after the serious work of the Russian contingent and Iranian proxies, is no longer capable of conducting large-scale offensive actions and will not be able to change the course of the war. He could not create alternatives.
To continue a dubious mission from all points of view in order to satisfy the ambitions of Kurdish separatists, further deteriorating relations with such an important ally as Turkey? For what? Trump is a purely business man, alien to any sentiments and conventions, as, in particular, showed the case of Khashoggi. And in Syria, the Americans have nothing to "shine." And in a couple of months the statement about “We won, and you can go home!” Will sound even more ridiculous than it is now. The Kurds - played the card, to cling to which Trump does not want.
That the decision was made right now is not an accident. The representative of the US administration, Sarah Sanders, at a briefing on Wednesday assured that Trump made the decision himself, without consulting the Turkish leader, that it could practically be considered as an admission of the exact opposite of the situation.
Recall that the decision of the US administration was announced after Turkish President Erdogan announced his intention to launch in the near future a new operation east of the Euphrates against the Kurdish formations, where the main forces of the American contingent are concentrated.
By the way, after the withdrawal of their small grouping, the Americans will nevertheless retain significant opportunities to influence the situation. Firstly, they will also retain the possibility of air strikes on the territory of Syria from their numerous Middle Eastern air bases. By the way, the Pentagon has already announced that the airstrikes will continue until the complete withdrawal of the US military.
Secondly, the support of terrorist and anti-government groups will continue. Thirdly, in Syria, American secret missions will continue to work, agents, and possibly mercenaries. And at the same time, the most important obstacle to normalizing relations with Washington’s most important ally, Ankara, will be removed.
The American “laying” in the North-East of Syria is eliminated, and the onset of the Turkish offensive may well lead to a clash with Syrian government forces, which, in turn, may give rise to serious disagreements between Ankara, Moscow and Tehran.
By the way, after the wave of criticism that hit him, Trump tried to explain the reasons for his decision. In particular, he said that Russia, Iran and Syria should be primarily involved in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group, since they are its enemies because of their geographical proximity to the region. The American leader wrote about this on Thursday, commenting on his order for the withdrawal of American troops from Syria.
“The departure from Syria was not a surprise. I led a campaign in support of this for several years, and six months ago, when I completely publicly declared a desire to take such a step, I agreed to stay longer, ”the US leader wrote on his personal Twitter page.
“Russia, Iran, Syria and others are local enemies of the IG,” Trump added. - It's time to go home and recover. Let's make America great again! ”
Obviously, what is happening, even if the withdrawal of the American contingent does not take place, speaks of a certain success of the antiterrorist alliance of Russia, Iran and Syria. However, this, alas, does not mean the final victory, the defeat of the United States and those behind the terrorists and rebels.
