Russia began supplying upgraded T-72B1 to Laos
Information on the purchase by Laos of several dozen modernized T-72B1 tanks appeared on 9 this December, when the Laos Defense Minister Laos Tyansamon Tyanyalat responded to the question about what weapons would go to the Lao armed forces from Russia and said that they would "new T-72 tanks". Earlier this spring, the head of the Laotian Defense Ministry visited 61 Armored Repair Plant, which upgraded the tanks to the level of T-72B1.
The Lao army is still equipped with such "veterans" as T-34-85, PT-76, who, due to their obsolescence, are no longer able to ensure the country's defense capability. The supply of upgraded T-72B1 will significantly enhance the armor component of the land forces of this Asian country.
The modernization of the T-72 tanks to the T-72B1 level was developed as part of the Breakthrough-2G ROC at the beginning of 2010. The first 50 tanks converted for this project, entered the army of Nicaragua. If Lao tanks are of the same modification as the Nicaraguan tanks, they are equipped with a gunner PN-72 (Sosna-U, produced by Belarusian JSC Peleng) with a round-the-clock sight, and PKP-72 24-hour panoramic sight (the Falcon Eye, also produced by OAO Peleng ", using a third-generation thermal imaging camera), BARV.468939.001 automatic target tracking, chassis information and control system, navigation system, new gun stabilizer, as well as anti-aircraft machine-gun installation with remote control.
