Ex-diplomat of Japan: Russia can give two islands, and two themselves will be ours
Discussion of the territorial issue, which as such is exclusively for Japan itself, is conducted not only by politicians, but also in the writing world. So, the writer Masaru Sato, well-known in Japan, decided to present his point of view. Earlier, Mr. Sato (born in 1960) graduated from one of the local universities in the Theology course, after which, by fate, he ended up in the analytical department of the Japanese Foreign Ministry. One of the main directions in his work was connected with Russia. Sato worked in the Japanese embassy in the Russian capital and often lectured students of the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University. About what views after these lectures Russian students could permeate is a separate question.
Now Sato does not work in the structures of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but he considers it his duty to comment on the latest events around the “Northern Territories issue”.
His statements published edition "Sankei".
Sato reports that there are five logistic options for dealing with the islands: from 4: 0 in favor of Tokyo (in terms of the number of islands in the South Kuriles) to what is today - 0: 4, when the islands remain in Russia.
The former employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan himself believes that Moscow and Tokyo “could have stayed on 2: 2”, when “Shikotan and Habomai are behind Japan,” and “Iturup and Kunashir are behind Russia.” In doing so, Masaru Sato develops his thought in the following direction: after obtaining Tokyo’s sovereignty over the two islands, it is possible to proceed with the conclusion of a cultural and economic agreement with Moscow on the other two islands.
