The damaged Norwegian frigate went under water
According to photographs published on the Web, off the southern coast of Norway, where the damaged ship was able to walk after a collision with the Maltese tanker Sola TS, now only part of the upper superstructure and antenna is visible on the surface of the sea.
Recall the collision occurred 8 November in the early morning. At that moment, the ship equipped with the Aegis system was returning from the naval stage of NATO's large-scale maneuvers Trident Juncture 2018.
After a collision at a speed of 17 knots (the tanker was on seven knots), the commander sent the frigate to the coast, hoping to run it stranded and thereby save it from flooding. However, the ship, which received a hole about ten meters long, began to quickly go under water and went to starboard near the shore. In the meantime, there were suggestions that the tide of the war ship could be caused by flooding.
The entire crew of the frigate (127 man) was evacuated, including 8 sailors injured in the collision. Rescuers attempted to stabilize the position of the frigate with the help of tugs and pumping water, but judging by the photos, these actions did not bring results.
The crew of the tanker was not injured, the ship suffered minor damage, no oil was detected. During the collision, on its board were 62,5 thousand tons of natural raw materials. It is reported that the crew of the tanker warned frigate, going to intercept his course.
The blow fell on the starboard side of the frigate. At the same time, the Norwegian Ship Traffic Control Center claims that before the collision, the crew of the warship “warned of a dangerous approach” several times on the radio. However, the frigate responded that "the situation is under control."
The cost of the sunken frigate is about $ 650 million. Currently, the causes of the collision are being investigated.
