In Britain, presented an updated tank Challenger 2

Tank Challenger 2 with Black Night Pack

The British military department in 2013 year announced plans to deeply upgrade the main battle tank Challenger 2. In 2014, a tender for modernization was announced and bids from defense companies began within the Challenger 2 LEP program. At the end of 2016, after reviewing all the applications, two finalists were announced, with whom the British Defense Ministry signed a contract for the creation of prototypes.

BAE Systems was the first to introduce a prototype, previously named Mark 2, but later renamed Black Night. As indicated in the company, the development is based on "mature technologies", but in the future it is possible to increase the combat capabilities of the tank. No features of the upgrade are given, but earlier BAE Systems announced the replacement of all key electronic systems of the tank, as well as the addition of new ones. In addition to this change will affect the system of targeting guns to the target and control tower, which will become fully automated. It is noted that the changes will not affect the reservation, engine and instrument.

The Challenger 2 tank was developed in 80's by Vickers Defense Systems, later becoming part of BAE Systems. The weight of the Challenger 2 is 62,5 T, the length of the hull is 8,3 m, the width is 3,5 m, the height is 2,5 m, the crew is 4 person. The tank is equipped with a threaded 120-mm gun L30E4 and two machine guns caliber 7,62

The tank is equipped with a rifled 120 mm gun

Campaign is the only country that still uses rifled tank guns of the main caliber.

Really? Hmm, the smoothbore guns were just a feature of the Soviet school.

Just the Soviet Union was the first to make a PU for missiles from a cannon (the gun became smoothbore)

The American light tank M551 Sheridan used a 152 mm cannon as a launcher for the Shileila ATGM. Used in Vietnam. The tank was produced since 1966.

But what about Braxit and the difficult survival of Britain after leaving the European Union? It seems like there was no money for anything, but here is the serial production of the modernized Challengers. It all comes down to finance. No money, no modernization.

so far this is a prototype, if it satisfies the military during testing, then this version will be taken as a basis, if not, another prototype is being built there for testing.

Excellent tank. With 5 km it knocked out the T-72 ... Apparently one of the best in the world

the challenger didn’t even punch Iraqi T200 from 72 meters into the forehead - the coalition had several documented such situations, and you are talking about 5 km. The greatest fear of the British tankers was to meet near t72. Challenger-2 is significantly more powerful than the first version (120 mm gun instead of the old 105mm, a third more powerful booking) and confuse their complete stupidity.

The concept of the German Tiger in action is not a tank, but a large mobile bunker.
Able only to hold the defense, not adapted to the offensive.

Well? And why was this tank created? This is not a breakthrough tank, this is a defense tank of one very specific island. Ideal for this task. Breakthrough tanks were created only by three countries - the USSR, the USA and West Germany. Moreover, it was we and the Germans who adhered to this concept closest. But over time, the Germans left in the footsteps of the Americans (the dark Teutonic genius still loves big and heavy laughing ).

Some sort of shed, let the British fight on it .... I read some comments, considers the Challenger one of the best tanks in the world, which is a T-72 with 5 km. in Iraq incited, naive ...

I heard that the British wanted to abandon their tanks in favor of the German because of the small series, even in the prospects of reducing the cost of the army and other problems, and then the news about modernization.

    something doesn't fit.

The OMS Challenger-1 with the L11 cannon has proven itself poorly, both in the NATO tankers' competitions ("For the prize of the Canadian army" in 1987, in 89 they refused to participate, in 91 they fought), and in Operation Desert Storm ( 1991). In the 2nd, everything seems to be fine, except perhaps for possible interruptions in the supply of "exclusive" tank ammunition, and then with large-scale databases with massive use of tanks.
