The newest British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived in the United States, where the crew will conduct one of the most important tests, namely, it will test fifth-generation F-35B fighters for “compatibility with an aircraft carrier,” Warspot reports citing the Royal’s press service fleet.
The British Royal Navy refused to use catapults on their newest aircraft carriers, and instead of deck fighters F-35C, designed specifically for the interests of the US and British Navy, they decided to purchase F-35B with vertical takeoff and landing.
The British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth will spend three months off the American coast, during which it will test the F-35B on its deck. In total, it is planned during this time to make about 500 takeoffs and landings on the deck of an aircraft carrier, while only four British pilots will participate in the trials. The aircraft will be tested for compatibility with the aircraft carrier in various modes of operation. Earlier it was reported that the aircraft carrier was tested for compatibility with helicopters, the tests were successful.
HMS Queen Elizabeth - the lead ship of a series of two of the newest British aircraft carriers. It is planned that after bringing the aircraft carrier into full combat readiness in 2020, its wing will consist of 40 fighter-bomber and Merlin helicopters with the possibility of expansion to 70 units. The base wing will count the 12 F-35B.
