70 years ago the Guard badge was established
The special badge "Guard" was established on May 21, 1942 by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR "On the introduction of guards units and formations of the Red Army and Naval For military personnel Fleet guard military ranks. "
In Russia, the guard was created by Peter I from the “comic troops” as part of the Preobrazhensky and Semenov regiments, officially named Guards in 1700 year. At that time, the guards were traditionally called the selective, privileged, best trained and equipped part of the troops.
Guards regiments participated in all historically significant battles of the XVIII-XIX centuries, on the fields of which the guards showed samples of heroism, courage and dedication.
In 1918, along with the disbandment of the royal army, the guards units were also abolished.
Guards survived the second birth during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.
In the autumn of 1941, for mass heroism, courage of personnel, high military skill, shown during the bloody battles of the Smolensk battle under Yelnya, four rifle divisions (100-I, 127-I, 153-I and 161-I) were named "Guards" .
In the future, this title was assigned to military units, ships, formations and unions of the Soviet Armed Forces, distinguished themselves in battles during the Great Patriotic War, with the awarding of the Guards Standard to the military formation, and the Guards badge to the personnel. For the Navy, special guards attributes were established on July 19 on the 1942 of the year, and after the war the Guards badge became uniform in design.
After the end of the Great Patriotic War, no Guard names were assigned, but when the troops were reorganized in order to preserve the fighting traditions of the Guard units, ships, formations and unions, their honorary titles were transferred to worthy successors - the best military teams of different types and branches of troops.
This tradition was continued in the Armed Forces of modern Russia.
Currently, more than 100 military units and formations of the army and navy have the honorary title of "Guards". The heirs of military glory, bearing a distinctive mark on their chests today, sacredly honor the commandment of their predecessors - "the guard does not give up and does not retreat."
