20
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the threat of the spread of international terrorism continues to be one of the main problems of our time. This, in particular, was about the threat of the spread of ISIS (* banned in the Russian Federation) to various regions of the world.
According to the Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs for the issues of new challenges and threats, Dmitry Feoktistov, Latin America is the region to which the IG’s eye has actually already had an eye. Statement by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation at a meeting of the Inter-American Committee to Combat Terrorism (quoted by RIA News):
We note the intensification of IG * attempts to create reserve positions in various regions of the world, including in Latin America. There is a danger that camps for training jihadists and recreational bases will appear on the territory of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean;
According to the Russian diplomat, isolated cases of recruitment of citizens have been noted so far, and measures must be taken so that this does not turn into a terrorist epidemic.
Dmitry Feoktistov noted that Latin American countries could join the international data bank of the Federal Security Service, which contains information about 89 terrorist groups and more than 11 thousand militants. He gave an example of effective cooperation in the antiterrorist sphere within the framework of the SCO.
Against this background, work has begun on an intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Argentina on combating terrorism.
