Ministry of Defense awarded medals to three citizens of Greece
Greek citizens were awarded departmental medals "For merits in perpetuating the memory of the fallen defenders of the Fatherland." The decree on awarding was signed personally by the Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu. The awards were presented to the President of the Greek-Russian Friendship Society of Kefalonia Island Dimitris Zafiratos, Honorary Consul of Russia in Corfu and the Ionian Islands Nikos Kanulas and the historian and writer Kostas Paduvas.
Zafiratos initiated and financed the construction of a monument to Russian sailors in 2011 in the city of Argostoli, who, together with local residents, fought for the freedom of Kefalonia. He was also the initiator of the installation of a memorial tablet in honor of Admiral Fyodor Ushakov.
Nikos Kanulas took an active part in the construction of monuments to Admiral Fyodor Ushakov on the islands of Kerkyra, Zakynthos and Lefkada, as well as a monument to Russians and Greeks who fell for the freedom and Orthodox faith of their fathers on Vidos Island. Every year, the honorary consul helps to hold the public forum "Russian Week on the Ionian Islands".
Kostas Paduvas is the author of the book “Following the trail of the Russian presence in Greece on Crete. 1897-1909 years”, dedicated to Russian soldiers and sailors who contributed to the reunification of Greece and Crete.
The Russian Ambassador to Greece, Andrei Maslov, in his speech, in particular, thanked the Greeks for their careful attitude to the monuments stories.
