The command of the Armed Forces of Great Britain has developed plans to reduce the size of the army by more than 14 thousand people. This was reported on Friday by the British newspaper The Times.
According to the publication, it is planned, in particular, to combine units of airborne troops and royal marines in order to save money. In the next decade, the military budget of the United Kingdom is expected to be reduced by 20 billion pounds ($ 27 billion). Three versions of such proposals were presented to Secretary of Defense Gavin Williamson when he replaced Sir Michael Fallon in this post in November. They suggest a reduction of 11 thousand troops, 2 thousand marines and 1250 representatives of the Air Force.
According to official data, the number of British army is now almost 83 thousand troops, compared with 112 thousand in 2003 year. The planned reduction will make the British army the smallest in the last 200 years, the newspaper said
Williamson, according to the publication, "was horrified" from the options proposed for selection.
He does not consider this acceptable. This will put the armed forces in a difficult position in the light of the level of international threat.
