White Charm

The myth of the beautiful counter-revolution formed the Soviet films.

I clearly remember the day when I first read Bulgakov's “White Guard”. It was 1983 year. Winter. Probably January or February. I was given a book for several days. By a lot of crap. In the Andropov USSR it was a terrible deficit. It was snowing behind the Kiev window. The streetcar was slowly making its way along the street. And I was standing by the window, and Petliurists, a hetman darkened by the cold of the cockade on Myshlayev's cap and an immortal phrase on the stove, were still spinning in my head: “Terrible rumors, terrible — gangs are red” ...

I was fourteen. And I regretted one thing - that I was not born in the reign of the sovereign-emperor Nikolai Alexandrovich and, therefore, I cannot be a cadet, a cadet or a lifeguard as a staff captain in a cavalry long overcoat. Historyseemed to pass by. Boredom, sir! The same thing happened with me as with Don Quixote. He, after reading knightly novels, desired to become an itinerant knight. And I - white guards. After all, what is the "White Guard"? The most that neither is a real chivalrous romance!

However, the time spent in stagnation ideally corresponded to such dreams. A sip of freedom could be drawn only from films about the civil war. They won in her red. But films can not be made only about the winners. They must also be "enemies". And these enemies looked much prettier than the Bolsheviks-revolutionaries. How could a little bald Lenin with a beard to fight with a magnificent General Blackness from the “Run”? How could the bloody maniac Anka-machine-gunner - obviously a latent lesbian, who hates men with fierce hatred, could be compared to the officer corps going to certain death in Chapaev? Remember, with a steaming cigar in your mouth? How was he worse than the Japanese samurai - this Russian chic suicide, who is pushing right on the machine gun, just not to live in the country of victorious socialism?

The “Adjutant of His Excellency” campaigned against the Soviet government better than any “enemy voice” cooing at night for Western money on BBC. The Quiet Don was undermining the collective-farm system more reliably than all the kulaks in the world. If for the sake of this system Cossacks like Hryshka Melekhov and Panteley Prokofyevich were killed, then what the hell is needed?

Therefore, I part easily with the Soviet Union in 91. I was sick of his red banners, members of the party, in the eyes of those who mutated into "democrats" and "nationalists", lies in the tribune and kitchen, quilted jackets and tarpaulin boots. He did not suit me aesthetically. A country unable to produce silk ties and depraved ladies' stockings had no right to exist, despite all its successes in the social sphere. But with white, I have not parted so far. This is my favorite fun. It happens that you close your eyes - and as if from a height you will see a steppe, chains of people in overcoats, black toys of guns. Only it turned out that even white color has many shades.

To begin with, most of the leaders of the white affairs were hardly ready to sing "God Save the Tsar!" General Kornilov - the first commander of the Volunteer Army - generally had democratic convictions. Even almost left. He began his first appearance on the big historical scene with an act that he could never get into Soviet films, because from a communist point of view he had no explanation. It was he who during the February Revolution personally arrested Empress Alexandra Feodorovna in Tsarskoye Selo. How could such a “good” person then go against the Soviet power? But the fact is that the future Russia General saw as a bourgeois republic with itself at the head. And myself - something like the new Napoleon, who was supposed to come after the unrest and restore order. The Bolsheviks, naturally, were not supposed to be in this wonderful new Orthodox Russia without a tsar. Is that some of them had to hang out for the beauty of the lampposts after the solemn capture of Moscow.

Junior officer. He starred in Kiev on Brest-Litovsk Highway №26

“General Kornilov could not be considered a monarchist,” Denikin, who succeeded him, wrote in his memoirs. - General Markov did not hide his monarchical convictions, but he firmly believed that it was necessary to reveal his convictions only after the liberation of the Motherland. General Kutepov, an ardent monarchist, overcame his feelings and desires in himself and declared that if the will of the Constituent Assembly stopped on a different, non-monarchist form of government, he would put his hand to the visor and say: "I am listening!".

General Alekseev Denikin also called "monarchist". True, it was some strange monarchist. After all, it was he who in March 1917 advised Nicholas II to abdicate the throne. No to say: “What are you, Your Majesty, crazy? What is renunciation? Now all together - on the cars and in Petrograd! To stifle freedom! ” So in its place (and the place was high - the chief of the general staff of the Russian army!) Any true monarchist would say.

Colleague Dr. Turbine. On the back of the inscription "For the good memory of the doctor Babkin." Judging by the heels and spurs, he served in cavalry

In general, even by origin, an interesting audience gathered at the helm of the Volunteer Army. The just mentioned Alekseev is the son of a soldier. Denikin had almost the same pedigree. His father - a simple serf man - got into the army under Nicholas I, when he served as much as twenty-five years, and from the rank and file he was defeated in the majors. He married a poor Polish lady. And from this marriage of a Russian officer “from simple” to a Polish, Anton Ivanovich Denikin was born - a Kiev junker and a convinced adherent of a united and indivisible Russia. He was not drawn to the patriots of resurgent Poland - he understood too well what kind of "ugly offspring of the Versailles system" would turn out.

Almost the only aristocrat in the top of the white army was its last commander, Baron Wrangel, a guards officer, and at the beginning of World War, the squadron commander of the Life Guards Regiment. But this one was all but the exception! Full scumbag! In 1914, under the command of Wrangel, horse guards captured German cannons with a blow to the forehead. It was almost the last such attack in the equestrian system in history. Imagine: two hundred horsemen are racing to meet volley and death. Above them, popping shrapnel is an advanced technique against sabers. Chalkboard few. A picture has been preserved: skinny, like Kashchei the Immortal, captain Wrangel sits after a battle on his taken gun. Eyes - country-and-a-shnye! He does not understand what he did.

Infantry captain. On the back of the picture date: 3.11.1916 year

The Russian cavalry did not go to such attacks any more - there were no suitable people left. But Wrangel deserved for this the first in the war of the officer order of St.. George SUCH could take on a hopeless cause! But he was already a full democrat by 1920. He even sent messengers to Makhno’s father to negotiate joint actions against the Reds and was going to give, if not independence, then wide autonomy to Ukraine.

In the movie, all these halftones disappeared. Let us return to the famous psychic attack from the “Chapayev” of the Vasilyev brothers. Something like that really happened.

But they staged events so that only smoke was left from the truth. In the film, the attack on the fighters of Vasily Ivanovich is marching, as in a parade, “officer Kappelevsky regiment”. In fact, he was not an officer and never wore black long uniforms with cuffs invented specifically for the cinema. He did not go into a mental attack against the Chapayevites. Izhevsk brigade became famous in it - an amazing part of the Kolchak army, formed entirely from the Ural workers. Sniffing the commissar authorities, these proletarians revolted and advanced the slogan: “For advice without the Bolsheviks!”. It is hard to believe, but they fought against the Reds under a ... red banner!

Non-commissioned officer of the cavalry. Most photographed with sisters

Izhevtsy wore the most ordinary tunic with blue cloth shoulder straps, their officers were chosen and addressed to them by “Comrade Lieutenant” or “Comrade Colonel”, and on the attack on Chapayeva 9 on July 1919 of the year near Ufa moved, harnessing the revolutionary “Warshawyana” on accordions! Their psychic attack in full growth without a single shot came not from a good life — whites simply ran out of bullets under the red banner.

But all this did not fit into the scheme of the civil war that was imposed on the communist winners in 30-s. Workers against the Bolsheviks? God forbid who knows! Therefore, the White Guards were ordered to portray only clean polished noblemen, as if just from a beauty salon.

It is hard to believe, but the choice between the service of whites and reds was most often determined on the basis of geography. The tsarist army collapsed with revolutionary propaganda by the beginning of 1918 had dissolved itself. According to the regular lists, before the death, there were about 300 of thousands of officers in it. With the exception of three or four thousand obvious passionaries, who immediately found themselves on Don at Kornilov, all the rest went home. Those who lived near revolutionary Moscow and Petrograd were mobilized by the nascent Red Army. The scheme was simple. The new government put the former tsarist officer with a choice: either serve us, or we will shoot your family. Time is difficult now, get into our position ... There was and another version of "conviction": what difference do you have - red or white Russia? With a star or with a double-headed eagle? After all, this is all the same Russia, but you are Russian! Thus, in Lenin's army, a widest stratum of “military specialists” appeared — the cadre officers of the pre-revolutionary General Staff. It was they who planned operations, commanded divisions and regiments. It was for looking after them, and not for sincere conversations with all sorts of Chapaevs, that the commissioners were invented.

And the officers Southerners and Siberians, who lived on the outskirts of a collapsed empire, were mostly in Kolchak or Denikin. The white army of Kharkiv takes it - and immediately all the local officers, who sit in their homes, are in its ranks. Captures Ekaterinoslavl - here you have more replenishment. Captured from the red regiment after the execution of a dozen clear Communists immediately reformed and turns white. That was the reality! And the Reds did the same: for example, all the Don and Kuban Cossacks who remained after the evacuation of Denikin from Novorossiysk were immediately enrolled in the First Konarmiy of Budyonny and sent to the Polish front - to cut the gentry that had risen from non-existence.

A separate topic is the Kiev Whites, described by Bulgakov. “White Guard” for many has become the main novel about the civil war. They believe in it, as in a historical source. Meanwhile, Kiev white - not at all white. Or not quite white. They serve the "hetman of All Ukraine" Pavel Skoropadsky. Moreover, serve for hire. The officers' squads, described by Bulgakov, were in reality Landsknecht formations - disillusioned with all the former servicemen of the Russian army, who for one reason or another found themselves in Kiev. The circumstances of their formation are described by Ensign Roman Gul in the memoirs “Kiev epic”, published in the “Archive of the Russian Revolution”: “I go to Proreznaya Street - to the squad headquarters ... Small rooms are full of incoming officers. Here, excitement, noise ... Everyone wants to know about the conditions of service, does it release from the Ukrainian troops, etc. Beautiful skinny brunette - Colonel Roth responds politely and responsively to questions ... "Gentlemen, the service only for the protection of the city ... the salary of 500 karbovanets per month ... there will be a hostel ... allowance ... daily allowance ... admission to the squad exempts from the general mobilization "... Officers are satisfied. After all, all of them have already starved, learned unemployment. And then there are good conditions and “city guard”, which is necessary for any government ”...

So decide who these people are? They don’t want to serve as part of the Ukrainian army, but all the same, in fact, they serve — they receive allowances and salaries. They feed on Skoropadsky and at the same time curse him. But envy them not worth it. Volunteers were much less than extras, filmed in the next film adaptation of the White Guard. Only two squads were formed - General Kirpichev and Colonel Svyatopolk-Mirsky. A word to the same Gul: “There are few people in the department - the 60 man, and, despite orders for further mobilization, the number does not increase. Sleepless service, almost without a shift, tedious ... On one of these days, a gene arrived. Kirpichev with some civilian gentleman. All were raised, lined up, and the general delivered a speech: “Gentlemen, now we are part of the army gen. Denikin, hurray! .. The organizer and initiator of the officers' squads, Igor Alexandrovich Kistyakovsky, hurray! .. "

Hooray shouts, and the civilian gentleman kindly takes off his hat. This is Minister Kistyakovsky. "Entry" into the army gene. Denikin was surprised by many, but no one would have thought that the gene. Kirpichev and Kistyakovsky obviously lied ”.

Meanwhile, all this was a very characteristic story of Russian-Ukrainian friendship with a sly one. Kistyakovsky - the Minister of the Interior of the Hetman Government - formed Russian officers' squads with the money of his department, and to raise their spirits, he insisted that they obey the distant General Denikin, whose army was already in the Kuban. Porridge? Rave? No, reality. This is the true story of the civil war without literary gloss. As there was no gloss on its live participants, who are now unconvincingly portrayed as fed-up, like domestic cats, Khabensky and Porechenkov, receiving for their on-screen feats not the 500 hetman's Karbovanians.

In the memoirs of Ensign Markovskaya Artillery Brigade Nikolai Pryuts there is a funny episode. After being wounded, he first leaves the hospital for a walk in Rostov-on-Don. The ensign writes about himself in the third person: “Walking along Sadovaya, he saw that he stood out in the crowd of passers-by. Without receiving any uniforms and not having enough money to buy anything because of the high cost, he was walking in the summer heat in a winter soldier's hats and in a worn, bulky Junker overcoat. " The money for this ragged man was only enough to order coffee and cake in a cafe and purchase “a simple soldier's cap, which he then wore half of the eighteenth and the whole nineteenth year. And that was all he gained in his first half year of service in building his battery. ” But Pryuts served in one of the most famous and combat units of the white army! Even after typhus and injury to the eye, he still returned to the line.

The famous Mikhail Frunze, the commander of the red Southern Front, who took the Crimea, commemorated the whites with a kind word after the civil war: “In the military, they, of course, were great masters. And they carried out not one talented operation against us. And made, in their own way, a lot of feats, revealed a lot of the most authentic personal heroism, courage and other things. In our political struggle - who can be our worthy opponent? Only not the wimp Kerensky and others like him, but terry Black Hundreds. They were able to beat and chop up just as we were capable of. ”

In the end, looking at today's Russia with a double-headed eagle, a tricolor banner, and Denikin’s ashes brought back to their homeland, who doubts that the whites won in the civil war? Won already after death, in their spirit obliqué a red country.

Yes, about our modern actors who played in the film "The White Guard" exactly said. Without belittling their talents, I want to say that very young people are described in the book, they now and then remember their gymnasium years. And Porechenkov and Khabensky are already under 40 or more, in such years one should not be a second lieutenant, but at least a major.

Yes, Wrangel long before his end declared land to the peasants, but ... for the money! By installments for 25 years! And the commissioners offered immediately and for nothing!

Well. the author has the right to think so ...
There was a lot of strange things at first glance that did not fit into the canonical framework - both the hereditary aristocracy in the Red Army, and not by mobilization, and the workers in Belaya, also of their own free will ...
The history of the Civil War is very different from the written ...
And let's say bluntly - the author quietly read the Quiet Don ...

And not only . I recently read the memoirs of I.V. Kalinin, who served in the military court of the Dobrarmia. Without any snot, the author, firsthand faced with a crime among the white officers, tells what kind of trash it was - the Volunteer Army. The only one whom he draws more or less positively is the ataman P.N. Krasnov, despite all his separatism. All the others - Kornilov, Denikin, Markov, May-Mayevsky, Bogaevsky, Filimonov, Wrangel, Sidorin, Shkuro, Pokrovsky, Naumenko and others - are people with obvious mental disorders. And even if we abstract from all literature - why did they, such "white and fluffy" lose? And no need to hang up on the "red terror". White terror was in no way inferior

It was not the whites who won, but the "Americans" again, but the coat of arms, the flag and the ashes - what they left to the Russian Indians, like feathers to the American ones.

I, unlike the author, from childhood played "for the reds", chopped in dreams a white bastard with a saber and all that. By the way, in my opinion, the greatest and most tragic pages of our history are associated precisely with Soviet times. But in reality, no matter how much we want to identify ourselves with polished officers (the article is cleverly written about polish) or commissars in dusty helmets, knights of the revolution, 90% of us are the descendants of peasants, the very ones whom both sides considered as a resource. And although they won the Civil War, of course, the Reds (the current government is by no means white, God forbid, not monarchists, rather a thief who got out), but we must remember that then our ancestors were used as material, and now they are using, so we need not cling to old stereotypes "white-red", "Tom and Jerry" :), but to think for yourself what we would like to change in the country, so that at least one can live in it.

I took this oath on August 28, 1977. There was no other in my life. 14 years after this, the CPSU, having a powerful KGB, the best army in the world, erred ... my country. After that I can compare how the White Guards left and what the Bolsheviks turned into.
By the way, in my oath it could not be
I swear not to use weapons against my people

Thank you for the article. It is very useful to remember that even before the "scoop" there was a long history. For the sake of the last 70 years, AleksMH can only discard the entire centuries-old history if one does not get interested in anything other than the history of the CPSU. Expand your view.

With the Russian civil war, not everything is clear. It will be many years before we understand all its participants who died for what.

In connection with this article, I remembered "Gone with the Wind", where the story is also conducted from the losing side and you sympathize more with the southerners, and not the terrible Yankees. It happens that a civil war continues in the minds. We need peace.

And the veracity of history from 1917 to 1991 can be checked by the editions of "History of the CPSU (b) and beyond the CPSU. There were several editions. By the will of fate I had a chance to get acquainted with these books.
Very interesting reading, and each edition is different.

Compatriots must fight under the flag of their fatherland, and the Red Army fought under the red banner with a star. After all, Lenin announced that the proletarians have no fatherland. In general, the international called for the destruction of the old world to the ground. For Lenin and Trotsky, people fought for whom the word fatherland, Russia meant nothing - an empty phrase, for them comrades Lenin, Trotsky, Sverdlov, Zinoviev, Kamenev, etc. became compatriots.
