Not passed ... The European Parliament accused Estonia of violating the rights of Russian-speaking
75
The Russia Today TV channel reports on a report to the European Parliament about the infringement of the rights of the Russian-speaking population of Estonia. The report was prepared by the Directorate of the European Union on the internal policy of the European Union. The report, in particular, states that the situation with the Russian-speaking population of Estonia looks extremely politicized.
The participant of the focus group from Estonia confirmed that the situation with the Russian-speaking minority and the legislation connected with it remains extremely politicized in the country. An example would be the seemingly neutral requirement for the level of proficiency in a language when applying for a job, which adversely affects the employment of the Russian-speaking population.
At the same time, the report notes that at least a quarter of the Estonian population speaks Russian. This is about 330 thousand people.
The document contains an appeal to the authorities of the European Union with a proposal to put the situation with the Russian-speaking population of Estonia under control. It was noted that the Baltic country should more effectively fulfill its obligations under the agreements relating to the languages of national minorities.
On the status of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia, a report may be released soon.
