The Lord of the World, Soldiers - fun or serious business? (part of 2)

When the "white metal" around the head ...

The first part of this material dealt with the fact that since there are certain hobbies, and therefore people who are addicted to these hobbies, there may well be those who earn from these hobbies.

Before us is a pack of white metal figures by David Kass (Ice Trail company), depicting a major of the Danish marines in Indonesia. Why he started with her - I do not know. Probably decided to get rich on rarities.

Of course, there are many ways to make bread and butter, but everyone talks about what he knows.

The Lord of the World, Soldiers - fun or serious business? (part of 2)

Later "Ice Trail" released this figure of the British machine gunner of the First World War with the "Lewis" machine gun on his shoulder on the scale of 1: 12. Very realistic and beautiful.

As already noted, there are play and collection figures. However, games are also collected. The difference is only in the degree of convention. In collectibles, they strive for naturalness, right down to the dirt on the pants and shadows on the face, while the game ones, in the “traditional” style, on the contrary, are colored with bright nitrocolors and shine. There are amazing scales and simply amazing series. For example, the figures of "soldiers" in scale 1: 6, that is very large. And they dress in cloth! The degree of detail is very high. Each such figure is just a work of art and they are very expensive.

A soldier of the Red Army on a scale of 1: 6.

At one time, when the release of such figures was just beginning, and I also published the magazine “Tankomaster”, I wrote that such figures could even be made valid. For example, a musketeer with a musket on a stand-forket could shoot at the expense of the simplest electric ignition system, Petrovsky bombardier firing a grenade from his rifle mortar, and a cuirassier pistol-gun (or pirate Tiich) to fire a pistol! Thinking it would be possible to make even an archer or a crossbowman make shots and such "active" figures would become your unique selling proposition.

Danish Sergeant 1601 Propulsion. Typical soldier period 1570-1648. Scale 1: 6.

But it is simpler, however, to produce more traditional figures, all in the same “traditional” style, which is still very popular. Their height is 54 mm and they are usually painted with shiny paints.

For example, such as these, depicting soldiers of the Civil War in the United States.

There is a different degree of conventionality even in the “traditional” style. These belong to the English firm "King and Country". But who is stopping in the same style to release a whole collection of our domestic 1812 era figures of the year? The hussar regiments alone then had 12 pieces. And the uniform of all of them, except for one, differed only in colors, but not in details. So you can release the soldiers of the 11 regiments in the same injection molds! The same goes for infantry. With the exception of the Pavlovsky Grenadier Regiment, the uniform of all the infantrymen was the same (well, it is clear that the rangers differed from the grenadiers) and differed only in color.

And this is a completely peaceful set ... "Old Hong Kong."

By the way, this set is a great tip. Why, in fact, all your soldiers must fight? Why not make a set of "Russian peasants 19 century", which show different regional types of Russian peasants - men, women, children? Kostsov and reapers, sowers and fans, shepherds, milkmaid ... Merchants and clerks, innkeepers and "sex", movers and artisans, female students and policemen, and even ... a demonstration of the "black hundreds" and revolutionary-minded workers. The heroes of the novels of Dostoevsky, whom people in the West like to read in order to know the "mysterious Russian soul." For figures - a short text. Series - "Russia the Great: session 19th to 20th". Nobody releases such figures. Again, they would become a unique selling proposition, namely, it provides the product with good sales. Here you just need to remember the words of my favorite movie hero - Chief Commerce Advisor of the Snow Queen from the Soviet film of the same name: “We need to be rich with rarities. In the summer of ice is a rarity - and I sell ice. In winter, rarity flowers ... ".

17's French Musketeers Samples poses.

Today, thanks to the Internet, it is not at all difficult to find photographs, drawings and details for soldiers of various eras. So in order for your “lineup” to be extensive, you should take a few of the most popular topics. For example, the Penza company TCP in the 90s produced figurines of 17 soldiers of the century. Who was that? Warriors Penza Fortress! Sagittarius, Cossacks, swan catchers, gunners and collars, as well as the Strelets head - that is, all those mentioned in the “Building book” of Penza fortress at the time of its foundation and then in 1675 year. Do you remember what time it was, especially 1998 year? Not to the soldiers, is not it? And ... in Penza on free sale we did not sell a single one. They sold straight to the West and ... officials, who went abroad, as presents and souvenirs. They sold to foreigners who came to our city. The figures of the 13 century Russian horse warriors on the scale of 1: 72 were very good. And in them there was an interesting highlight. Usually such figures are somewhat conditional due to the presence of a shield - it prevents him from casting what is behind him. And the spears are short, because you can’t hide the long ones from the "white metal" - they break or leave disproportionately thick.

Sergeants with halberds and protans of the 17 century. Samples poses.

What came up? Cast a hand with a shield, throwing it to the side, and then bend it at the elbow. Viksint is a material for the manufacture of a mold, this trick allowed and the figures immediately became lively. Well, spears were made of great length separately from polystyrene sprues from models, stretching them over a candle flame. In the fist of the right hand there was a hole where the already painted spear was inserted, and the figure itself was painted and the spear did not interfere with the coloring process. They put two girls-students from the local art school to paint them - and it was good for them, and for us!

Very beautiful figure, is not it? "Black Prince" in person. Very high quality painting of armor and clothing. But ... a gross error in the figure itself. He was supposed to wear a helmet bascinet, and here we see a tournament helmet for fighting with spears. Knights who fought on foot were not worn!

Of course, it is not worth taking up such work from the “bay-floundering”. You need to think over and prepare. To study foreign magazines, to look at catalogs, to determine labor costs and to solve many more other questions. For example, come up with a good, durable, beautiful and cheap packaging.

This is the English magazine I received in the fall of 1991 of the year. I looked and thought: “And why did our Soviet authorities hurt us all so much? Why can they have it all in their “decadent West”, but not to us? Where is she, social justice declared from high tribunes? ”

And this is the cover of the Russian magazine "M-Hobby" with the image of our "Penza" tank T-60 and tankman figures in a short fur coat. Then the T-60 was not yet produced by Zvezda, but by some other company. Well, and we made a new tower for it, white metal tracks, an exhaust pipe and other small things, as well as a tanker figure. The model was appreciated both in Russia and abroad. So you can always find your niche in the market.

By the way, contrary to the silly judgment common to us, the judgment of ignoramuses, advertising “there” is by no means so expensive. Often it is there ... nothing at all, you just need to know how, where and how to give it. But such information here costs money. That is, even a novice manufacturer of toy figures has the opportunity to declare itself in the United States, in England, and in Japan for free, well, then, further, developing your business, you can do there and paid advertising.

And again, you need to know what exactly is published “there”, and refer to this, since printed materials abroad are treated with respect. Here again, the choice of topics ... What we have soon? October 2017 of the year. One hundred years since the important event in stories all of our civilization! "City of the Sun" Tommaso Companella tried to translate into reality and in a sense, it was possible. But ... all events have a direct relationship to the figures. Take at least polystyrene sets of figures of the company "Dragon" from Hong Kong. There are four figures in them, united by a common theme. We can do the same. After all, "ahead" we have a civil war! “White and red”, “Kappelevtsy” and Chapayivtsi, “colored shelves” of the White Guard, Cossacks of Dutov and Cossacks of Budyonny, “Chinese” of Trotsky and invaders in Russia. Well, and, of course, the Makhnovists, Grigorievtsy, "chapanniki", "green" ... The wheelbarrow of Makhno's father with the inscription in Russian on decals - in front of "Fuck you leave!". Behind - “Fuck you catch up!” Beauty !!!

Here are ready-made samples for 1-scale figurines: 35 on the topic of the Civil War in Russia: a white general, a Kornilovist - “who is painted as a poster, then a Kornilov soldier!”, A drozdovets. Fig. I. Zeynalov.

We take the old issues of the magazine “Tseykhgauz” or the book of the British publishing house Osprey “The Civil War in Russia” (white, red and invaders) and make according to them the “Komucha army”, the national “armies” of Khiva and Bukhara, “Comrade Sukhov” with a Lewis machine gun, Chapayeva is riding a horse in a burka, going into a psychic attack of the Kornilovites ... Sales are guaranteed, because the “expensive egg for Easter”, and the “Easter” is already very soon!

Guards grenadiers of the British army.

However, a steady sale of its products can be organized in a slightly different way. For example, to issue here on these postcards figures of soldiers of the British army. Every year thousands of tourists come to the Royal Arsenal in Leeds and the military museums of Britain. I want to buy something for memory, and the children are asking. And here you are, and even made in Russia. With love and very high quality.

Coldstream Guard

You can produce sets of two figures. One in full dress, the other in the "service". Different years, different regiments, but best of all already painted in the style of "traditional". Agree with some castle, or rather, a castle shop in England, where this regiment lodged and everything ... you them, they - you!

Royal Horse Guards.

Even such a “kickshaw”, as the name of your company, and that will matter. For example, we had the company "Provinces of Russia" and its name was not only what was said, it also emphasized the provincial level of production with its ... high quality. It made me think. "Ah yes, the Russian province!" Do no worse than ours! Moreover, foreigners, accustomed to the boxes from Tamiya, liked our photographic packages made in black and white graphics! Unusual!

Royal Military Police.

It is clear that, having entered this path, you will have to remember one important rule: the first year you feed your business, the second year you and the business feed each other, and only the third business starts feeding you. But patience, work, skill and some bit of luck overcome everything in the world!

One can sense the dashing nineties in this phrase. Now, starting a business, only those who are not sorry for their money hope for luck.
The rest begins with market research. in order to find out the state of the issue, demand, market capacity, current supply, trends, prospects, price level, etc. etc.
Depending on the thickness of your wallet, you can do this research yourself, or you can order thousands of commercials for professionals with a lot of American money.
And it turns out that at the moment you can enter this market either with supermastery, which will allow you to create designer figures to order from materials up to platinum, or with a superoriginal idea.
    For example.

In the mid-70s, the Soviet Trade Mission bought the production technology and molds from the Americans. And so, in 1977 at the Donetsk Toy Factory the legendary era of the DZI Indians began, which immediately became the most scarce commodity in the USSR.
The mold of the Egyptians was soon transferred to production at the Dnepropetrovsk Combine (DK) and the Dnepropetrovsk Egyptians went on sale in 1979. Small figures were sold in sets in plastic bags with a paper liner, at a price of 50 kopecks (initially 8 figures).
Subsequently, the price of sets changed (75 kopecks).
Large figures (6 pcs. In a complete set) cost 25 kopecks / pcs.

It was supposed to be wearing a bascinet helmet, and here we see a tournament helmet for spear fighting. Knights who fought on foot did not wear such!

What is so hard to come up with a rationale? A knight stomps some archers on foot, but rather even disembowel arbalester who are seated behind slingshots. Therefore, he needed the best helmet for protection against arrows and bolts, which was found in stocks. No wonder he also took the shield, although in ordinary close combat with such armor the shield is not a topic, it will only interfere. And an ax to chop both slingshots and crossbowmen when he gets to them.

"HISTORY OF FIGURES" DZI "-" DK "
In March-April 1971 at the XXIV Congress of the CPSU, it was decided to increase the production of children's toys and goods for technical creativity in the USSR, for which it was also planned to attract Western companies with experience in the production of such goods and the necessary equipment. Fulfilling the decisions of the congress at the end of 1973 in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), the Donetsk Toy Factory (later the Donetsk Toy Factory, DZI) was commissioned. For the equipment of the factory, in Italy, machines were purchased for the production of dolls, animals, etc.
Representatives of the British industrial group "Dunbee-Combex-Marx" ("DCM"), who owned the famous model companies "Rovex", "Frog", and since 1967 and the British branch of "Louis Marx & Co., Inc.", entered into negotiations with V / O "Novoexport", and offered to supply equipment to the USSR for the production of various sets for auto and aircraft modeling and figures. The Soviet side did not want to pay for equipment in foreign currency, but preferred to pay with finished products. To this end, DCM created a subsidiary company, Novo Toys Ltd., which became responsible for the supply of equipment to the USSR and for the receipt of finished castings, their packaging and sale. A cooperation agreement was signed in August 1975, and then 12 contracts were signed that dealt with the details of the transaction. The payment for the mold was not necessarily the castings obtained from it. Based on the resource of the molds, their price was determined, and the price of each casting. After full payment of the cost, the mold became the property of the Soviet side, and subsequent purchases of castings by the British had to be carried out in foreign currency. DCM acquired subsidiaries of Louis Marx & Co., Inc. in early 1976 in the United States and Hong Kong, from Quaker Oats Co., which has owned Louis Marx & Co., Inc. since 1972. The first molds for cars, aircraft models and figures were delivered to the USSR in early 1976.
Seven sets of 60 mm figures, previously produced in the Hong Kong-Taiwan Warriors Of The World series: Indians, cowboys, Vikings, Romans, Egyptians, pirates, knights and four sets of 150 mm (6 ") figures: Varangians, Neanderthals, fell into the USSR , sentinel, Russian soldiers. The molds of the figures were put into production at DZI, and already in the second half of 1976, the first sets went on sale. On the first issues of the 60 mm figures there were still stamps “Taiwan Marx” (Vikings, Romans) and "Hong Kong" (Indians, cowboys, pirates), subsequently honed them, and on the coasters of the Romans, Indians and cowboys in, put the number.
The numbers on the figures of different issues could change, or they were sometimes removed, presumably, in later releases.

The figures were mainly produced from 3 materials: 1) low-density polyethylene (high pressure) GOST 16337-70 or low-density polyethylene (low pressure) GOST 16338-70; 2) PVC (polyvinyl chloride mass); 3) polystyrene.
The most produced figures are from low density polyethylene (high pressure) and high density polyethylene (low pressure). The most common colors of the figures: black, green, brown, coffee and milk, red, orange, blue, blue-green. Various color shades are also possible. Later releases of the figures are characterized by brighter colors.
Later, in the early 80s, trial batches of figures made of PVC (rubber) and polystyrene began to be produced, although the plant did not have official permission to use these materials. The colors of the PVC sets were: green; turquoise; blue; Orange; red; Gray. Most often made of PVC: Indians, pirates, cowboys, very rarely - single Vikings figures, just as rare are large figures pioneers and Russian soldiers. Polystyrene figurines (popular name - prickly plastic) are found less often than all others and in single copies (pirates).

When it became possible not to adhere too strictly to the requirements of GOST, various experiments with material for the figures began. For example, figures appeared from sonorous fragile hard plastic and from soft plastic floating in water.
DZI figures were officially issued in the USSR until 1991, then their production was discontinued by the artistic council, due to wear of the molds. After the collapse of the USSR, the production of DZI figures continued in Ukraine, but their quality became noticeably worse. There were only 6 knights in the set, and the Indians remained full in the late 70s. Perhaps, due to the marriage of individual figures, incomplete sets began to go on sale. Some sets (cowboys, Vikings) were sold on sprues, in cardboard boxes for painting. Figures were tentatively launched until 1994 (the closing date of the plant).
There are pirated copies of the figures "DZI", the release of various cooperatives, but these are copies made not on the original molds, and of appropriate quality.
Currently, the molds of all DZI figures have been acquired by the Moscow company ARK Model LLC. The mold of the Dnepropetrovsk Egyptians has been lost forever.

In March – April 1971, at the XXIV Congress of the CPSU, a decision was made to increase the production of children's toys and goods for technical creativity, for which it was also planned to attract Western companies with experience in the production of such goods and the necessary equipment. One of the first in Moscow was representatives of the British industrial group Dunbee-Combex. They brought with them a huge number of samples of their products. Most of the presented samples were too complicated for production, therefore, only a small number of toys were chosen that did not require complex equipment and machine tools: prefabricated models of cars and aircraft and, in fact, figures.
The agreement was signed in August 1975, and then twelve contracts were signed that related to the details of the transaction. The partner on the Soviet side was V / O Novoexport.
According to the materials of the magazine "M-Hobby" № 4 from 1995
The State Toy Museum still holds a kind of "birth certificate" of cult Donetsk soldiers. This is the protocol of the meeting of the Art and Technical Council for the toy (which operated under the Ministry of Education of the Ukrainian SSR), which approved the figures in production in December 1977. Then, however, only their experienced batch managed to release. Massively, Indians and cowboys, Egyptians and Romans, Vikings, knights and pirates appeared on the shelves of the Union by the spring of next year.
“But this is the date of the“ birth ”of small, 6-centimeter soldiers,” says Tatyana Pshatetskaya, museum fund manager.
    - Large figures (15-centimeter Neanderthals, Varangians, sentinels and foot soldiers) were approved later - in May 1978.
According to the materials of the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda in Ukraine" dated March 11, 2013
Moscow collector Denis, conducted a titanic work to study all of us beloved DZI soldiers.
Thank you very much for that. "

I got to the computer today, you can write comments normally. Already several times the topics of articles intersect with the routes of my travels.
Back in 1990, during another business trip to Mannesmann DEMAG, I had the opportunity to visit the city of Leipzig. At that time, we still did not have digital cameras, so we could not capture the photos. So the Winkler family once lived in Leipzig in Germany.
In 1959, in the gatehouse of the Winkler Dölitz estate, an exhibition of tin soldiers was opened to the public, including 20 thousand soldiers in 85 dioramas. Back in 1930, an international congress was held in the city of Leipzig, where collectors of tin figures gathered, it was there that the standards for the manufacture of tin toys, which are valid to this day, were established and adopted. Subsequently, a school was born in the city and began to function actively, where they were engaged in the construction of dioramas. There is also Borodino.

In general, there are several such museums in Germany. and everywhere the level is amazing.

Oh, it would be nice if our industry established a mass production of historical sets of soldiers for secondary schools. Need to explain the battle? He set up the "regiments" and launched an offensive. The boys probably liked it very much. A couple of times, in a history lesson, we managed to illustrate the battles on Lake Peipsi and Kulikovskaya in this way. A complete delight!

In England, people pay more for the figures. One must earn money in business, not engage in altruism. To do what they give more and sell where it is more expensive. For the last three years, Russians have had to switch to a saving mode due to a drop in real incomes. Last year, 70% of Russian families began to cut spending on updating their wardrobe, food, entertainment, travel on vacation, and medicines. Of course, saving is necessary even with a very stable financial situation, but if the family began to deny themselves the necessary products or medicines, it can be considered poor.

Here is one of the samples - the children's calendar sheet for 1945

Taken from the site Soviet Military Toy - Soviet military historical toy ...
On the site’s forum, one of the members of the forum joyfully praises the purchase of the Children's Calendar for 1950 in good condition - it contains a set of paper two-sided soldiers called “Victory on the Trebbia River”, as well as the self-made toy “Torpedo Boat” and the home-made toy high-speed airplane " Red Star".

Thank you for the article, Vyacheslav Olegovich! One small remark. You may be somewhat “off topic”, but “anniversary niches” begin to work a couple of years before the date, products have increased demand for a couple of years. So, with the Civil War, for the debut, it’s a "late rush." There are sometimes happy coincidences. One of my old customers, the owner of a military-historical miniature company, works west. He had a composition, an equestrian knight striking an Arab with a spear, and sold rather poorly. After NATO invasion of Afghanistan, bin Laden’s face began to be painted on the Arabs and the figures were scattered like pies for one and a half times.

He was left without work, and the price of the figures (they, together with the magazine) was rather big, they started from 250 rubles, rose to 450, 2 figures per month, the rider Kutuzov cost about 550. In general, the entire price of the collection was about 33 thousand rubles. He did the repair, dropped a couple of figures, they suffered a little, and packed them back into their original cases for the duration of the repair. The collection is noteworthy in that there are soldiers of the Ukrainian and Belarusian regiments of the Russian army, officers, gunners, musicians, militias, a Bashkir rider, partisans, staff officers. A lot of all sorts of soldier specialties so to speak. Model cars gave me cheap, 150 rubles like. BM-21 is our model, it is expensive - 600 rubles, the T-55 tank was like 350 rubles.

But in general, the better the miniature, the more expensive it is, especially if it is also painted. Big cities have more opportunities. I have few opportunities in a small city. Therefore, I acquired what was. This I answer to another commentator about the quality of the figures. The metal is soft, of course, it is deformed when dropped and impacted.
