August. Eighth
Many interesting projects are associated with the name of Janik Fayziev, such as the films “Admiral”, “Turkish Gambit”, “Day Watch”, “Night Watch”, “The Irony of Fate. Continuation "... But his new work has thrown some critics into confusion: why do we need" military agitpropaganda "in our time. If we talk about "August ...", then call it only military-patriotic would be completely wrong. Yes, it has a large number of military component. However, the events of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict are presented as an interweaving of the fate of many people, hopes, faith and love, the destruction of the material world and the hymn to the best human spiritual qualities, which will allow us to call the picture a melodrama. There is no “iron” patriotism in it, there is only love for one’s land, where people close to man live. You can protect these people even at the cost of your own life. Pathetics in this movie-requiem no. Mother's tears about the loss of his child in the war is just love, a dream of peace, but not propaganda against military conflict.
However, this picture should not be called just a melodrama. The best definition would be a combination of genres, since it also has fantastic elements, which, oddly enough, only added to the psychological aspect of the film. This kind of "fantastic" line involving combat robots and mechanical dragons only draws attention to the horror and senselessness of resolving conflicts with the help of aggression.
Also, the film can be attributed to the adventure genre, which contributes to the exciting plot and the rapid development of events. The sensation of the power of the movement gives rise to unprecedented in scale shooting, which use the most modern achievements in the field of computer graphics and special effects, which until now had no analogues in Russian cinema.
The picture is completely determined by its name - “August. Eighth. " A well-known fact is that in war all human qualities manifest themselves especially strongly and vividly. Survival becomes the main thing, and morality fades into the background, becoming the lot of strong people. So the plot sees Fayziev. The shooting was carried out in Ossetia, Abkhazia and Moscow. In order to find a suitable nature, I had to travel around almost the entire North Caucasus to search for species that would emphasize the ugliness and unnaturalness of war as much as possible. To transmit the scale of real military operations, more than thirty units of real military equipment were involved in the filming - armored personnel carriers, military Tanks and helicopters. About XNUMX thousand soldiers, as well as more than three thousand civilians, most of whom were eyewitnesses of the events that happened at that time, were involved in the crowd. According to the director, it is worth noting the help of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, which made the film very truthful and reliable.
So after all what movie? Muscovite Xenia, played by Svetlana Ivanova, lives after a divorce from her mother and seven-year-old son Artem. New family life is the ultimate dream of a woman. However, her son, who is fond of playing games with robots, was not liked by the newly appeared mother's elect, Egor, played by Alexander Oleshko. By the way, it is worth noting that it is Artem’s fantasies that give life to toy robots, with which the kid tries to solve his problems.
The main thing in the film is the contrast between peace and war. In August, Ksenia goes to rest in Sochi with her fiancé, while Artem’s father (Yegor Beroev) takes her son to the Caucasus. It does not even occur to a combat officer that this trip can bring. Death overtakes Artem's parents, he only miraculously manages to escape. And in order to wrest his son from the epicenter of hostilities Xenia arrives in the Caucasus. She pursues the goal - to save the child, overcoming circumstances and fear, and become happy. And the most interesting thing in the film is that it makes no sense to argue on how many percent it is close to reality. It seems that this is a fantastic storyhowever, she has several prototypes from reality. This was mentioned by the director himself, as well as by one of the prototypes of the main character, Aleksey Uvachov, the commander of the intelligence group, who received the title of Hero of Russia. Fayziev is very picky about details, so he approached the shooting very seriously. As the hero of Russia noted, the film even retained its call sign “Lipa”.
For actors, the shooting was not easy. 50 from 90 shooting days in the Caucasus turned out to be very cold and rainy. But this did not prevent the survey participants from laying out to the maximum. The director said at one of the meetings with the audience that the opportunity to create was given to us by the Almighty, so you need to use everything we can to convey to the audience one simple thought - there is no place for war in our lives. Let's hope that his voice will be heard.
