Defense Ministry of Bulgaria decided on the proposals for the supply of Bulgarian Air Force fighters
The media reported that four proposals were received - from Sweden, the United States, Portugal and Italy. And only Sweden offers the delivery of Saab JAS-39C / D Gripen fighter jets of the new production. Three other proposals relate to the supply of used fighters from stock, with repairs and upgrades - the United States and Portugal offer Lockheed Martin F-16A / B aircraft with upgrades to MLU (according to the "Romanian" scheme), and Italy - Eurofighter Tranche 1 series with modifications.
The Bulgarian government and parliament approved a budget of 1,5 billion levs (767 million euros) for the purchase of eight fighters of the first stage. Including 10 million lev were to be allocated in 2016 year, 200 million lev - in 2017, 2018 and 2019, 440 million lev - in 2020 year and 450 million lev - in 2021 year. In total, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense wants to acquire a total of 16 fighters, including eight at the indicated first stage, and eight at the second in 2022 - 2023.
Within the budget of 1,5 billion lev, not only combat aircraft should be purchased, but also weapons for them, aircraft maintenance equipment, auxiliary equipment, flight planning and analysis systems, spare parts, flight and technical personnel trained and the corresponding ground infrastructure created
