Italian Navy transferred to the sixth frigate class FREMM
"Luigi Rizzo" is the sixth ship in the FREMM series of the Italian Navy and the second representative of the project, made in the multi-purpose version. Keel laying went through 6 September 2013 of the year, 19 December 2015 of the year occurred.
FREMM is the largest European program for the construction of multi-purpose frigates, which was launched in 2002 by France and Italy under the auspices of the European Arms Purchasing Directorate (OCCAR). The Italian Navy ordered a total of 10 ships (6 in the multipurpose version and 4 in the anti-submarine version). The construction is carried out by the company “Oridzonte sistemi nali”, the owners of which are “Fincantieri” (51%) and “Leonardo” (49%). The cost of the frigate is 764 million euros. Closing a deal is envisaged after 2020.
It is expected that FREMM ships will be replaced as part of the Italian fleet built in the 1970s “Lupo” class frigates, which have already been withdrawn from combat, and “Maestral”, which are about to expire. The new frigates are planned to be used to patrol territorial waters, to protect against all types of threats - air, surface, underwater, ground, shipping control, counter-terrorism and anti-piracy. They are designed to become the basis of the Italian Navy for the next decades.
The construction of the lead frigate, (F-590) "Carlo Bergamini", in the multi-purpose version began at the shipyard "Riva Trigoso" in February 2008 of the year. 29 May 2013, the frigate was transferred to the Italian Navy. The following four frigates were built in the antisubmarine version. The second ship of the series, (F-591) Virginia Pheasant, Italian fleet received 19 December 2013 of the year, third, (F-592) Carlo Margottini, 27 February 2014 of the year, fourth, (F-593) Karabiniere , - 28 April 2015 of the year, fifth, (F-594) Alpino, - 30 September 2016 of the year. The seventh and eighth ships of the series are under construction.
The frigate "Luigi Rizzo" is a ship of length 144 m, width 19,7 m and full displacement of about 6700 t. The power plant of the CODLAG type, including the gas turbine AVIO-GE LM2500 G4 with 32 power of MW, allows the ship to develop a cruising speed of 16 knots and maximum - 27,5 nodes. The range of the frigate at a speed of 15 knots is about 6000 nautical miles, autonomy is 45 days, the crew is about 200 people.
