Before the 1998, air defense and missile defense forces were an independent service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In 1998, the Air Defense Forces merged with the Air Force in a new form of the Armed Forces - Air Force. In 2009 — 2010 All air defense units of the RF Air Force (4 Corps and 7 Air Defense Divisions) were reorganized into 11 aerospace defense brigades. In 2011, three air defense brigades of the Air Force became part of a new branch of the Armed Forces - the Aerospace Defense Forces.
In 2015, the Air Force merged with the Aerospace Defense Forces in a new form of the Armed Forces - the Aerospace Forces (VKS), which included organizationally selected a new branch of service - the Air Defense Forces and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Forces.
