Nuremberg through 70 years. History in photos

1
More than 70 years have passed since the day in the German city of Nuremberg ended the international military tribunal, which tried the main Nazi war criminals. The entire tribunal took place in the Nuremberg Palace of Justice. Judges, investigators, prosecutors, defense attorneys, translators, secretaries and all who were involved in this process worked here. The prison of the palace of justice also contained the accused themselves. The execution of convicts was also carried out in prison. And today the building of the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg is still used for its intended purpose. In addition, the building houses the Museum of the Nuremberg Tribunal. I want to show what has changed over 70 years and how today the places known to the whole world by historical photographs.

Aerial view of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice. On the right is the eastern building. On the third floor of this building, open sessions of the International Military Tribunal were held from November 20, 1945 to October 1, 1946. The 1945 photograph also clearly shows the prison. Today only one wing out of four remains of it.

Nuremberg through 70 years. History in photos

The main building of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice.

East building of the Palace of Justice. On the third floor in the courtroom (large windows in the center of the building) meetings of the International Military Tribunal were held.

The entrance to the eastern building of the Palace of Justice.

The wing of the prison, which contained the defendants during the work of the tribunal. It is clearly seen that a separate closed passage was made from the prison building to the main building of the tribunal, through which the accused were taken for interrogations and court sessions. Today, the wing is destroyed and only white plaster reminds of it in a preserved part of the central prison building.

Courtroom (hall 600), general view. Here was the International Military Tribunal. Today, for visitors access to the hall is possible in the absence of court sessions, mainly on weekends.

Courtroom. On the left were places for the defendants. In front of them were defenders at the tables. Right on the hill is a place for judges. In the left far corner of the hall behind the glass partition worked translators. Between interpreters and judges stood a platform for the appearance of witnesses.

Places for viewers, press, invited. During the last repair, the balcony and part of the spectator seats were removed.

Another view of the courtroom.

The dock, on which sat, in particular, Goering and Hess. Today it stands in the museum of the Nuremberg Tribunal.

The main entrance to the meeting room. Near places for defendants and defenders.

Placement of defense and defendants. Currently, the door for the defendants to enter remained in the same place, and the clock was slightly moved.

The judges worked here. The large windows on the wall behind the judges during the tribunal’s sessions were covered with thick curtains.

This place housed translators who provide simultaneous translation of the proceedings of the tribunal’s meetings into Russian, English, French and German.

Tribune for witnesses (absent today). The photograph shows the interrogation of Hermann Göring as a witness in his own case.

The gymnasium of the Nuremberg prison. On the night of October 16, 1946 of the year it carried out the execution of Nazi criminals convicted by the International Military Tribunal. The building of the gymnasium was demolished in 1983, and today only this photo reminds of its existence.
