Legendary scout Alexey Botyan turned 100 years
The most famous operation carried out by Botian, is the rescue of Krakow from the destruction by the fascists in 1945 year. He became the prototype of the main character of the book by Yulian Semenov (and the film of the same name) "Major Whirlwind", dedicated to those events.
“Alexey Nikolaevich Botyan was born 10 in February 1917 of the year in a peasant family in the village of Chertovichi on originally Belarusian lands, which the Poles considered their own in 20 of the last century. After the reunification of Belarus, he became a citizen of the USSR. Then he was sent to study at the NKVD intelligence school. Its end coincided with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
During the battle for Moscow, Botyan participated in various operations in the rear of the Germans. Later, as part of a partisan detachment, he fought on the territory of Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Czechoslovakia.
“In November, 1943 of the year, already as a commander of the reconnaissance and sabotage group, Botyan worked in the deep rear of the enemy in the western regions of Ukraine and Belarus. On his account, an explosion of the SS headquarters in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine - while nearly a hundred officers, punishers were killed, ironically gathered for a meeting on the fight against the partisan movement. Having torn off a strategic operation to “sweep” several regions of Ukraine, Botyan saved tens of thousands of civilian lives, ”the material says.
Then his group was sent to the area of the Polish city of Krakow. There he managed to get top-secret plans of the German command to destroy the city in case of the approach of the Soviet troops.

After the war, Botyan continued to serve in intelligence. Resigned with the rank of colonel.
During his service, he was repeatedly awarded military orders and medals. In May, 2007 was awarded the title Hero of Russia.
