The post of German Foreign Minister left Frank-Walter Steinmeier today. The decision on his resignation was made by the President of Germany Joachim Gauk. Reported by the German press. Today, the powers of the German foreign minister are transferred to the ex-minister of economics, head of the German Social Democrats (SPD), Sigmar Gabriel. The handover ceremony from Steinmeier to Gabriel was held at Bellevue Castle, where the residence of the President of Germany is located.
Joachim Gauk thanked Steinmeier for serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs and added that his political experience "may be useful to him in another direction of activity." Earlier in the German press it was reported that Frank-Walter Steinmeier could be nominated for the post of German chancellor. More likely his transition to the presidency.
Recall that Steinmeier recently called Donald Trump's coming to power in the United States "the real end of the 20th century," adding that the world "is in for tremendous changes." On the eve, Steinmeier said that Russia's position in the global world had strengthened and “from the point of view of Russian interests such gain is beneficial.” At the same time, Steinmeier said that Russia "cannot achieve its goals in Syria solely by military force."
For reference: Frank-Walter Steinmeier served as German Foreign Minister twice: from 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2017.
