Russian pipeline forces celebrate 60 anniversary

Russian pipeline troops celebrate their 60 anniversary. This branch of service was formed on January 14 1952 by directive of the USSR Ministry of Defense as a separate battalion of fuel pumping. Foreign armies have no analogues.

The Directorate of the Press Service and Information of the Ministry of Defense of Russia noted that the Russian pipeline troops ensure continuous delivery of fuel over long distances. The capabilities of these troops make it possible to lay field trunk pipelines with a total length of more than 16 thousand km for fuel supply. The main "weapons" of the troops are pipelines, installation equipment, means of mechanization of work, as well as communications and special vehicles.

A serious test of the combat readiness of this type of troops was the participation in hostilities in Afghanistan. Pipeline forces deployed more than 1200 kilometers of field trunk pipelines, which supplied 5,4 million tons of fuel. This amounted to 80% of the total supply, ITAR-TASS reports.

The diverse capabilities of pipeline troops have been confirmed many times in peacetime when eliminating the consequences of a state-of-the-art man-made and natural disaster: putting out peat bogs and large forest fires, eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, 1989 earthquake in Armenia and in the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus region.

Igor Gorbul, head of the press service of the Southern Military District, said that "today, the 60 anniversary will mark the pipeline battalion deployed in the Stavropol Territory with a solemn construction of personnel. The soldiers of this battalion in the summer of 2010 participated in extinguishing peat bogs in the central part of Russia. At the same time, of fire, four pipelines with a total length of 40 km were laid. In June, 2011, during a tactical exercise, pipeline troops extended an 75 trunk line kilometers from the settlement of Ardon (Se faithful Ossetia) along the Caucasus Range to the South Ossetian border.
