The details of the detention in Moscow of a Ukrainian citizen Roman Sushchenko are being clarified. The editors of the Ukrainian media Ukrinform say that Sushchenko is their special correspondent in France. In the department of public relations of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation it is reported that Sushchenko is not a journalist at all, but an employee of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. He was arrested on suspicion of espionage.
TASS cites the statement of the FSB:
The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation in Moscow during a spy action detained a staff member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Colonel Sushchenko Roman Vladimirovich. A citizen of Ukraine purposefully collected state-secret information about the activities of the Armed Forces and the troops of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, the leakage of which abroad could damage the defense capability of the state.
The submission states that a criminal case was initiated against Colonel of the Ukrainian Army Roman Sushchenko under art. 276 of the Criminal Code "Spying".
Some experts believe that representatives of the Ukrainian sabotage group who were detained in Crimea could have passed Colonel Sushchenko.
In Ukrinform stated that Sushchenko is not a soldier, and in Moscow he was on his own initiative, supposedly on vacation.
Ukrinfrom writes:
We emphasize that Roman was on vacation at the time of his arrest and arrived in Moscow for private purposes. He was detained in Moscow on the day of arrival and, in violation of all international rules, the Russian side did not inform anyone about his arrest - neither his wife, nor the diplomatic institutions, or at his place of work. His wife, Angela Sushchenko, who remains in France, found out about Roman’s detention only on Sunday morning, October 2, calling her husband’s relatives after he hadn’t been in touch for two days. At the same time, his relatives spoke with extreme caution, hinting, avoiding even the words “detained”.
