Commentary by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in connection with the attempt of the European Commission to level Nazi Germany with the USSR
The Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the statement of the European Commission on the occasion of the European Day for the Remembrance of the Victims of Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes, in which its representatives F.Timmermans, V.Yurova and T.Navracic made another attempt to equalize Hitler's Germany with the Soviet Union.
“It (the statement) once again attempted to equate Nazi Germany - the aggressor country and the USSR, whose peoples took the brunt of fascism, set a reliable barrier in the path of the misanthropic ideology that threatened the very existence of our civilization”, - states in the message.
The statement “denies the fact and significance of the defeat of the Nazi regime and the liberation of Europe by the Soviet Union, since, they say, with the end of the Second World War, many peoples of Central and Eastern Europe continued to suffer from other totalitarian regimes, an artificial linkage was made to August 23 - the date of the conclusion of the Soviet-German Treaty about non-aggression ", the document says.
"At the same time, in the understanding of Brussels officials, it was his signing that" marked the beginning of one of the darkest periods of the newest stories Europe. "Meanwhile, just the Western countries pursued a policy of appeasing the aggressor, culminating in the notorious Munich Agreement 1938 of the year, which resulted in the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia. We would also like to recall that declarations of non-aggression similar to the Non-Aggression Treaty between Germany and the Soviet Union , were signed by England and France with Germany a year before the USSR. But these facts in the European Union prefer not to recall, ”the ministry stressed.
“We observe with indignation the cynical attempts to falsify the history of the Second World War, to level the victims and executioners, to raise the rank of Nazi heroes and their minions. The objective of such unscrupulous actions is obvious - to use historical speculations in geopolitical games, to provoke political phobias, to embroil entire countries and peoples. The fight against monuments to Soviet citizens who died in the fight against Nazism, launched in a number of European countries, especially in Poland, is of particular concern.
“It seems that the main lessons of the Second World War in the EU leadership have not been fully learned. And, it seems, they still do not want to do this, ”the document says.
