The ISS is ours: the asymmetric response of Roscosmos to the Olympic rudeness of the United States ...

181

I do not know how much the citizens of the United States respect their 35th President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963, but they seem to have learned one of his aphorisms by heart: “Today, two things are really important for the prestige of a nation: space flights and Olympic gold medals ”.

These words best explain why such a “doping” hoax with the XXXI Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was arranged. The Americans needed: a) to increase their national prestige; and b) to negate the national prestige of modern Russia.
What came out of it and still will work out - one can argue on this subject, make forecasts, and so on. But it is clear that with the prestige of the American nation, all is not too good, since such “dirty dancing” began.

Russian asymmetric response

But the Russian response to the American-British outrages personally, to be honest, surprised me, and delighted me, and even puzzled to some extent. Because he turned out to be asymmetrical, as Vladimir Putin likes to say.

Yes, the Russian Olympic team went to Rio heavily, by more than a third, with a truncated composition and took fourth place in the unofficial Olympic team competition (19 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze medals), followed by teams from the USA, Great Britain and China, which seems , fully corresponds to the real balance of power in the modern political arena.

Yes, with WADA and international federations for individual sports, as well as with a number of their high-ranking functionaries, there will be litigations and other showdowns on this issue ....

But Russia delivered the main blow to the national prestige of the United States quickly, rigidly and in a completely different field. After all, Kennedy talked about Olympic gold medals and about flights into space, isn't it?

So what did our "gas station country with a torn economy" do in this direction? She made two very quiet moves ....

First, she announced that, for financial reasons, she would no longer be able to keep three of her cosmonauts at the International Space Station at once, their number would be limited to “only” two. And secondly, just yesterday Roskosmos decided to abandon the creation of a "heavy" version of the Angara rocket with hydrogen fuel, returning to the "Energy" version with RD-171 engines powered by kerosene-oxygen steam.

Roscosmos is stocking up on popcorn

The essence of the first “quiet course” is that the ISS was serviced exclusively by Russian cosmonauts - the American astronauts did not descend to such “trifles” and were not trained. They do not know, so to speak, the fundamentals of the “struggle for survivability” in near-Earth space: neither “know-how”, nor “life-hacks” ... Well, or have forgotten it all after the triumph of their “lunar program”.

Do you understand the perspective? Do you recall the film “Armageddon”, in which a drunken Russian cosmonaut, Colonel Lev Andropov, in a fur hat and a dirty t-shirt with a star, is repairing his heroic American “partners” in the Universe with such a treacherous star ship? That’s what it is ... ...

NASA, by the way, instantly realized this prospect: “We will stand up to everything that can add risk to the program. First of all, the risk for our crew on board and the station itself. ” I wonder how they intend to "resist"? Throw "poor Russian" money on the third rate for the ISS? Hire a Mexican migrant workers? Build a training center with modeling at least some "emergency situations"? Something else?

Roscosmos is clearly stocking up on popcorn, looking forward to ten seasons of a new stellar series performed by the best American comedians.

"Uncle Sam" decided not to please

With the "Angara" is still more interesting.
Practically all sane specialists in space have been shouting for several years that “clean” hydrogen rocket engines are “space blimps”, the effectiveness of which is much lower than even “kerosene” analogues, not to mention “cursed” hydrazine. That this circumstance greatly increases the cost of outputting the payload to any orbits. That the stated characteristics of the American Delta IV, which is considered to be the flagship of the "purely hydrogen" astronautics, are godlessly inflated, including the maximum payload (as long as it did not exceed 60% of the maximum in real life). And it is such an expensive pleasure that even the United States does not make more than four launches per year, and the whole program is of a purely customized nature and is aimed primarily at disorienting Russian competitors and their gradual ousting of space launches from the world market ....

But for a long time, all the arguments of the critics of "hydrogen cosmonautics" were simply ignored: Russia declared its desire for "environmentally friendly", "hydrogen" cosmonautics, and the program of creating a unified family of modular launch vehicles "Angara" was actively developing.

The ISS is ours: the asymmetric response of Roscosmos to the Olympic rudeness of the United States ...

However, now, apparently, at the top it is not that they figured out the situation, but they just decided not to spend extra money, pleasing "Uncle Sam". This means that the long-term "special relationship" between the American and Russian space industry, comparable only to the "special relationship" between the United States and Great Britain within the Atlantic Partnership, is called into question.

All of this is fraught with enormous additional costs for the United States — or a rapid fall from “space orbit”. Thus, Russia made, in fact, a double warning shot for American "partners". Whether the next one will sound, to defeat, depends only on them, on their behavior, which can no longer be considered adequate.

Do not play the fool, America! Enough already relay batons to drop! There will be no "rush" ... ...

In the meantime, until 2018 we will have to deliver to the ISS under contracts (Astronauts, Lunavts, Martians) and we will not go anywhere. I understand the desire of the author of the article, so that mattresses get to the ISS on a trampoline, as D. Rogozin promised them, I fully support this idea.

Well, it doesn't last long. On the other hand, the closer the time frame, the more weighty our arguments will be perceived, and the more inevitable the understanding of the hopelessness of the situation will become for our "partners".
For these one and a half years, which would radically change the situation in the space industry, NOTHING, the "partners" simply will not have time to do, and they will not be able to, as, indeed, in the near foreseeable future.

And here is the basis of these statements:

Outer Space Budget decrease by 15-30%, about this in a letter to "Roskosmos" reported Deputy Minister of Finance Tatyana Nesterenko July 28

Continue to rejoice that amers will have some problems from slowing down and slowing down Russian space programs (which is very bad for Russia).

The US is now using us because there are no means of delivery to the ISS.

In addition to tons of food, water, and materials for scientific experiments, a Japanese cargo ship arriving at the International Space Station on Monday (August 23, 2015) delivered an astrophysical telescope to the orbital complex. He will be the company of the magnetic alpha spectrometer AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer), launched at the station in 2011, in the hunt for cosmic rays.
The CALET Calorimetric Electron Telescope was supposed to be installed on the external platform of the Japanese KIBO module last Tuesday (August 24). After commissioning, CALET will be able to accurately measure cosmic rays even at higher energies than AMS.
Cosmic rays can also shed light on the so-called dark matter. Unlike ordinary matter, it does not emit electromagnetic radiation, which scientific instruments can detect. Dark matter, which accounts for about 27 percent of the universe, can only be detected indirectly by studying the influence of its gravity on nearby objects.

Dviglo even in their terms of ve-4 will pass the test only in 2019, but given the explosion of dvigla together with the test bench, I think the timing will move for a couple of years. And the ship itself for the astronauts could not hear something that they would create.

In general, the situation with the delivery of American astronauts into space is a controversial topic, and here, as they say, a two-edged sword. While we take the Americans to the ISS and put their satellites into orbit, we:
        1. We earn money for our space industry.
        2. Gaining experience.
        3. We are developing new technologies in this area.
        4. At the same time, the Americans do not scratch themselves much in order to develop at an accelerated pace the development of the same means of delivering goods and people into space, and they gave it into the hands of private companies, whose finances are very limited. And it also plays into our hands.

But there are also disadvantages, which I will not talk about, because they are already obvious. Therefore, what is better for us - to carry or not to carry, to participate or not to participate in programs with the Americans, is a very controversial issue that requires detailed consideration.

Two weeks in the trash can

Unlike the designers of the USSR / Russia, the American design idea in sewage issues went a long and difficult road and, despite all the efforts, created complex, uncomfortable and unpleasant devices. The Gemini ships were supposed to fly for a long time, up to two weeks, and here the ersatz in the form of UCD could not do. As a matter of fact, UCD did not disappear anywhere and were used at "Gemini", "Apollos" and "Space Shuttles" at the start. Male astronauts went through the process of selecting a condom for UCD (I recommend reading Mike Mullein “Riding Rocket”, he describes it very colorfully) and could choose to start with UCD or diaper (Mullein advises choosing UCD, diapers are uncomfortable). However, already in orbit it was necessary to use some kind of longer-term toilet.
Starting with Gemini-V, the system was changed - the urinal was made tight-fitting and put on like a condom. A non-return valve was added to the hose, which protects against urine emissions, and the receiver was replaced with a simple soft container: In this form, the system was more or less suitable for use. Starting with Gemini, the urine (except for small packets for subsequent medical analysis) was not stored on board, but was discharged through a special heated valve (the liquid in a vacuum instantly evaporates and turns into ice, without heating the valve would clog). According to astronauts, one of the most beautiful spectacles in space is the discharge of urine at sunset. Urine turned into ice and was beautifully scattered by an ice cloud. In principle, any other liquid would be suitable instead of urine, but ordinary water, for example, was not dumped overboard.

The situation with solid waste was much, much worse. For them, NASA came up with special packages: The package had an adhesive neck and had to stick to the buttocks around the anus. After defecation, you had to put your fingers in a special bag, separate the feces from the body and push them further into the bag so that they would not fly out. Then it was necessary to tear the bag with the disinfectant, place it in a large bag with feces and mix it - this was necessary in order to kill the bacteria and prevent gas formation in the bag. Then came the turn of toilet paper and wet wipes, and, finally, it was necessary to put all this in another bag and pack it in a garbage container.

In general, the idea turned out to be really creepy. Glue on the neck pulled out hair on the skin, feces flew out of the bag, it took about 45 minutes to go to the toilet, and there was no way to fill the cabin with unpleasant odors.

The Gemini program had two long flights - Gemini V (almost 8 days) and Gemini VII (two weeks). Both flights required extraordinary willpower from astronauts. Worst of all was Frank Bormann and Jim Lowell at Gemini VII. A week later, the cabin was filled with a stink of urine (not everything could be wiped off) and unwashed bodies (there was no change of clothes, no opportunity to wash). Astronauts tolerated as best they could - the first time in a big way went only on the tenth day. And the last few days have become really unpleasant. But at that time it was a big victory - the United States overtook the USSR in terms of flight duration, and two weeks was enough to fly to the moon. Are you a candidate of mathematical sciences? I mean V. Ivanov, whose assumption is outlined in a video on the scientific council. I draw your attention to the fact that before this he consulted with specialists, candidates and doctors of sciences in celestial mechanics, GAIISH (State Astronomical Institute named after Sternberg). Please note that the task is only in the formative stage, this is stated at the end of the video and approved by the mathematician N. Kellin.

In kilometers of march along Mars, in hours of flight of automatic stations, in terabytes of photo of shooting and data of planetology. The more we fight, the further humanity will be thrown back in space exploration. The Chinese brothers are already catching up with us, even Sandra Bolok, with the help of a Chinese ship, was able to return from the ISS to the ground. A documentary film Gravity watched?
Asimov's "The End of Eternity" beautifully describes how humanity was never able to reach the stars.

Well, the crew on the ISS was reduced by one Russian cosmonaut, and that frightened them very much! But not so long ago someone from our government yelled that soon the Americans on the ISS will be "launched" on trampolines or "hitchhiking", it looks like the super-profits of the Russian oligarchs are more important than the prestige and authority of Russia! His trucks fly quietly one by one to the ISS, the manned version of the Dragon calmly passes the tests one after another. What is he worried about?

What a pity that it is impossible to minus. Say no in the country? Approach the railway and try to move its darling - every 2 minutes long trains with our resources rush west. Can catch a few oligarchs and hang them on a tie? Immediately there is money for flights to a nearby star system laughing

The idea is good, but difficult to implement. Here you are tormented by one oligarch to catch, and you are a few! smile

But it’s necessary, it’s very necessary to survive in order for Russia to become an independent, GREAT country

Wait and be patient? Why should we “stand up” instead of development? Stand against what? And when will this "something" end, and with what? The meaning of your words is not entirely understood ... As far as I remember, I have been hearing these words since the late 80s. older people, I think even more))

In twelve to fifteen years we will be going out into space on other devices, on different physical principles, and we would not want the politicians to merge all this “for the snuff of tobacco”. And Pin .... .m even before this it is necessary to survive.

they are all ... our secrets and technologies now know, they can repeat and surpass.

They use part of our life support units under seals and with our control in their USA. According to the agreement signed by them, they are not able to open our "black boxes". And now everything is fiddling with our unions and progress. Our system is ingeniously simple. And what is simple and effective can be obtained only if it dawns, but not by systematic development.

And the fact that a reduction in the financing of cosmonautics (a slowdown in its development) is, in a way, a victory of amers, it did not occur to him at all.

Unpromising programs are being reduced and new, promising ones are opening up.

The actions of Roskosmos will, in the end, dot the i's. Tired of hearing NASA bragging about leadership in space. When they find themselves without a space station and astronaut delivery vehicles, they will only have to launch satellites and other unmanned objects!

Yes, the problems with the mattresses are only ahead, and here the Chinese are not asleep. They gathered on the moon, and commercial launches of amers do not stick to something. And the Ukrainians maydanutyh can not help, but really want.

they were already trying to help (in my opinion, a rocket exploded in 2013), like our engines let us down, only our noses poked them, they upgraded something there, American fuel, and our responsibility ???? After that, everyone finished experimenting.

So our "partner friends" are just supposedly scientific passengers? Who coined the term self-service? Why not try it out in full? This also results in damage to the prestige of the United States: their cosmonauts cannot ensure the implementation of life support operations and this is done by the wild barbarians Russian. What a humiliation of insolent Saxon exclusivity and advancement! How to survive this!

By the way, in time. Blue Origin introduced a new engine superior to the parameters of the Russian RD180 ...
You don’t need to throw hats, but work. I hope Roscosmos does not stand still. In general, it is time to start letting private companies into the development of space technology.

The American Blue Origin conducted bench tests of the BE-4 engine, intended to replace the Russian RD-180 unit, which ended in failure.

"Yesterday we lost a set of fuel system test equipment on one of our BE-4 test beds," Blue Origin said, adding that the incident will not impact engine development.

The company promised that they would return to testing soon. From the message published by Blue Origin, as Ars Technica notes, the scale of the accident is not clear, but “the fact that Blue Origin, a relatively secretive company, shared this information at all is significant.” In total, Blue Origin has at least two test beds; the company previously stated that it plans to create three working prototypes of BE-4.

The first is shown in Blue Origin in March 2017. The company is headed by American billionaire Jeff Bezos, who is considered the fifth richest man in the world (besides members of royal families and heads of state).

BE-4 is planned to be installed on the Vulcan rocket - a replacement for the Atlas V launch vehicle, which carries the Russian RD-180. Two single-chamber BE-4s installed on the first stage of the Vulcan carrier will collectively develop more thrust than one two-chamber RD-180 first stage of the Atlas V.

Aerojet Rocketdyne is also working on replacing the RD-180. Unlike the BE-4, the AR1 engine is suitable for installation on an operational Atlas V rocket. The company has not yet presented a working prototype of the unit, but in early May 2017 it conducted fire tests of the AR1 pre-chamber. are you talking about this unit???

introduced a new engine superior in parameters to the Russian RD180 ...

Where and when did this engine introduce itself and clearly demonstrate its superiority? As a rule, they rolled out a model to the music and shooting of crackers?

It’s true that they say they carried out bench tests, but haven’t found a single video anywhere, although they usually show their “successes” with special pomp, and it’s not a fact that this piece of hardware is not a dummy at all!!!
