The armed forces of Vietnam are the largest in Southeast Asia. Traditionally, they have a very high combat capability. In just a quarter of a century, from 1954 to 1979, they won a victory over France, the USA and China, which has no precedent in modern stories.
The disadvantages of the Vietnamese armed forces are the archaic structure and, most importantly, a large proportion of obsolete equipment. In the Army, it is close to one hundred percent. In the Air Force and Navy in recent years, a gradual update has begun.
Soviet does not rust
The main supplier of military equipment to Vietnam was the USSR, now it is Russia. The second most important is Israel. Individual purchases aviation technicians are made in Poland, Spain, Canada, combat boats - in Australia. The arsenal still has a certain amount of captured American equipment captured in the first half of the 70s, as well as Chinese received in the late 60s. With the help of Russia and Israel, its own defense industry is being created. First of all, enterprises for the production of small arms and missile weaponsshipbuilding is developing.

Call of Camrani
In general, the armed forces of Vietnam have significant potential. Nevertheless, they need a radical technical update, especially since the main (if not the only) alleged adversary is the PLA.
Vietnam is our ideal ally due to the long-standing and strong all-round relations between Moscow and Hanoi and the potential of the country's armed forces described above. Our most important foreign policy task for a long time should have been the creation of the military-political bloc Russia-India-Vietnam. New Delhi and Hanoi would go for it with great pleasure, they really need a strong ally against Beijing. Alas, we are imposing a friendship with China on both countries. This led to a certain rapprochement between New Delhi and Hanoi with Washington. Nevertheless, they do not go to a full-fledged union with the United States, realizing that he does not guarantee security at all. On the contrary, Washington can purposefully expose both to the conflict with Beijing in order to "fight with China to the last Indian and / or Vietnamese." Because of this, New Delhi and Hanoi are actively converging, as well as trying to build some kind of alliance with Australia and Japan.
At the beginning of 2000, Hanoi asked Russia to leave Cam Ranh only solely because it stopped seeing a deterrent factor in relation to China. Now Moscow is beginning to woo Hanoi to return to the military base. That would really be very helpful. But the conditions of Hanoi have not changed, and the Vietnamese are absolutely right. Now they themselves are starting to hint at what the Russian ships are ready to see at Cam Ranh.
As in the case of India, our good bilateral relations with Vietnam are sufficiently maintained only in military-technical cooperation. All hope for him so far.
