Armored personnel carrier Pansarbandvagn 302 from BAE Systems
Swedish Army Pbv 302 armored personnel carrier deployed in large numbers in the Balkans
In 1961, Hagglunds and Soner were awarded a contract to develop a new tracked amphibious armored vehicle.
The first of the two prototypes was made in December 1962, and in October of the following year, the company received a contract for the initial production of 700 Pansarbandvagn 302 armored personnel carriers (Pbv 302 for short). The first production machines Pbv 302 were made in February 1966, and their production continued until December 1971. Pbv 302 has never been exported and is no longer marketed.
It is assumed that the Swedish army currently operates approximately 363 BTR Pbv 302 and 203 specialized options. At the beginning of 2010, the Swedish army announced that it had a total of upgraded 292 Pbv 302 vehicles with an 20-mm gun (currently less than 200) of the total 650.
Subsequently, Hagglunds and Soner merged to form Hagglunds Vehicle, which in the year 1997 was purchased by the British Alvis pic. At the end of 2002, the company was renamed Alvis Hagglunds.
At the end of 2004, Alvis Pic was bought by BAE Systems and Alvis Hagglunds was named BAE Systems Hagglunds.
And relatively recently, the company was renamed again and now, finally, stands under the name BAE Systems.

The body of the Pbv 302 armored personnel carrier is all-welded, made of rolled steel; The front of the case provides protection against shells of caliber up to 20 mm.
Above the tracks, the hull sides are double, which gives increased buoyancy and protection against cumulative projectiles.
The driver sits in the front of the car in the center and has a hatch cover that opens backwards, with three day periscopes in front of it. The central day periscope can be replaced by a passive night periscope. The driver also has a folding windshield, which is stored in a box on the right rear door.
The single turret on the left and a little behind the driver is armed with an 20-mm cannon Hispano-Suiza with elevation angles + 50 ° / -10 °, the rotation is circular on all 360 °. The 20-mm gun has a technical rate of fire of 500 per minute and fires both armor-piercing and high-explosive fragmentation ammunition. In the combat pack, there are three ribbons of 135 shots plus 10 armor-piercing shells, each store contains 10 shells. The gun has a monocular sight with a magnification of x8 to combat ground targets. To combat airborne targets, the turret hatch opens back and the shooter uses open sights installed in service. There are three daily periscopes for observation in the anterior sector and one for observation in the posterior sector.
The commander sits on the right and slightly behind the driver, he has a one-piece manhole cover that opens backwards, plus five day periscopes for a circular view.
The power unit consisting of the engine, clutch and transmission is installed under the bottom of the machine. Power is transmitted from the transmission forward to the transverse shaft with couplings and disc brakes at each end of the shaft.
The air intake, air outlet and exhaust pipe are located immediately behind the driver. The Pbv 302 machines deployed in the Balkans were equipped with a large attachment to the exhaust pipe so that the exhaust gases did not enter the habitable compartment.
Nine infantrymen sit in the back of the car, three on the sides facing each other, one in front facing forward and two in the back. The crew sits down and leaves the Pbv 302 through two large stern doors.
Upstairs along the sides of the troop compartment there is a hatch with a hydraulic drive, controlled by the commander, which, when opened, allows the infantry to fire from personal weapons from inside the car.
Hatches are used by the commander of the machine and, if necessary, can be locked in the half-open state.
Suspension with torsion shafts consists of five dual rubberized road wheels with driving wheels in front and sloths in the stern. Hydraulic shock absorbers are installed on the first and last road wheels. Caterpillar type M70 have a service life of over 10000 km with one retooling. This track has 20 percent better grip on soft soils compared to previous tracks.
The floating machine Pbv 302 is driven on the water by rotating the tracks. Before entering the water, two water deflectors are raised in front and the bilge pumps are turned on. The Pbv 302 armored personnel carrier does not have a protection system against weapons of mass destruction, although it can be installed at the request of the customer.

The basic machine Pbv 302 with minimal modifications can be used as a cargo version (2000 kg) and sanitary version (four stretchers in the basic version and with the installation of a special set of up to six stretchers).
options
Pbv 302 with hinged armor
A number of Pbv 302 vehicles were deployed in UN operations in the former Yugoslavia. In order to increase the level of survivability, they were equipped with additional passive armor to protect the hull and turret. They were also equipped with an anti-splinter base, additional external storage boxes and a modified exhaust pipe. Sometimes they are given the designation Pbv 302C.
Pbv 302 Towers for BTR
Some of the Swedish army XA2001 203х6 armored personnel carriers supplied by 6 from the Finnish company Patria Defense were equipped with Pbv 302 turrets. Additional armor screens were installed on the turret.
Commander machine
The variant received the designation Stripbv 302. From the base case of the Pbv 302, it is distinguished by the presence of four antennas (instead of two). Radio stations are installed on the starboard side of the troop compartment. In the car, as a rule, four radio operators and staff personnel are placed, who have flip tables for maps installed.
Observation point
The variant received the designation Epbv 3022 and was released in the number of 10 vehicles to the armored brigade. The main difference lies in the fact that the commander's hatch was replaced by a new turret, which housed the fire control officer. In the turret mounted binoculars combined with an optical rangefinder; officer using one eyepiece to switch between binoculars with magnification x4 and rangefinder with magnification x10. The turret is rotated manually, the line of sight is also set manually. In the habitable compartment there are three radio stations, two wired communication channels and a navigation system. In appearance, the Epbv 3022 variant can be recognized by three radio antennas, an additional turret and additional pontoons on the two front water deflectors.

Fire control machine
The fire control option received the designation Bplpbv 3023, has a crew of three people (commander, gunner, driver), plus a detachment of seven people. Externally, the car has four radio antennas and additional equipment installed on the roof of the troop compartment.
Rlpbv 3024
A radio relay station with the official designation in the Swedish Army Radiolankbandvagn retains a turret with an 20-mm cannon. A large container with a mast is installed on the roof. In the stowed position, the mast folds horizontally, but for work it rises to a vertical position. Machines of this type were deployed in the Balkans and were equipped with additional armor.
BTR Pbv 501
This is the Swedish version of the Russian BMP-1. Dismissed.
BTR Pbv 401
This is the Swedish version of the Russian MT-LB (multi-purpose conveyor (tractor) light armored). In 2010, it was announced that a total of 503 machines had been purchased, of which about 200 are still in operation, including the reconnaissance variant. Then all of these vehicles were decommissioned and, according to the UN lists on the transfer of 335 weapons, the Pbv 401 machines were delivered to the Czech Republic for resale.
