Sikorsky X2 sets a new speed record among helicopters
The world speed record among helicopters, beaten by Sikorsky X2, was set on 11 August 1986 of the year on the Westland Lynx with the 800 G-LYNX. The previous achievement was 400,86 km / h.
The new record set by X2 in West Palm Beach (Florida, USA) is an interim. According to the company Sikorsky, X2 just "surpassed" the record G-LYNX. Achievement worthy of the 24 years of waiting and X2 technological excellence is planned to be completed before the end of 2010.
X2 created with the expectation of a top speed of 463 km / h.
The full name of the model - X2 Technology demonstrator - underlines its function of the platform for testing and demonstrating Sikorsky technologies. The design is constantly being modified; in particular, the world speed record failed to break through the tail of the helicopter is replaced by a new one. X2 has two rotating in opposite directions coaxial screws with short blades and has a number of advantages, in addition to high maximum speed, namely, good hanging, easy handling at low speeds, and fast speed dialing.
The company has been working on the X2 project since 2005.
“The level of vibration and X2 behavior in flight meets or even exceeds our expectations,” said Jim Kadgis from the Advanced Sikorsky Programs Department. “We are pleased to announce that all X2 systems are working for our task - to achieve speed in 250 nodes (463 km / h) in the current year.”
