In pursuit of Soviet reliability
The operation of the VKS RF in Syria clearly demonstrated the role of modern weapons and military equipment. There are few manufacturers in the world whose military-technical products can compete with American or Russian ones. Israel belongs to this category of countries.
It competes with leading manufacturers in their traditional markets - with Russia in India and Vietnam, with the USA - in South Korea. Consider, on the basis of the materials of an expert from IBV, M. V. Kazanin, what is happening in the sphere of military-technical cooperation of Israel with its Asian partners.
Vietnam: from “Galil” to “Spike”
The pilot project of the Israeli and Vietnamese MTC was the Z111 factory built in Thanh Hoa for the licensed production of Galil ACE automatic assault rifles, versions 31 and 32 armory IWI Ltd. The contract value amounted to $ 100 million.
The prerequisite was the positive results of trial operation from the 2011 of the year in subdivisions of the Armed Forces of Vietnam of such small-scale weapons produced in Israel, such as Tavor-TN-21 "Tavor" assault rifle, "Uzi" submachine gun, "Neador" grenade launcher. Hanoi acquires these weapons and military equipment samples for the ground forces and special forces units of the naval infantry.
The military-political leadership of the NRW monitors the experience of operating the Israeli UAVs Heron and Searcher Mk.2 in the squadron of the Indian Navy (located at the naval base "Tamil Nadu").
The interest of the Vietnamese military is also caused by the Spike NLOS anti-tank guided missile, which makes it possible to destroy enemy armored vehicles at a distance of 25 kilometers, which is considerably longer than the range of American, European, Russian and Chinese anti-tank missiles. Spike NLOS has one drawback: weight - 70 kilograms, which makes it installed on a mobile (car, helicopter) carrier.
The Israeli company IMI delivered the first batch of high-precision munitions of the EXTRA and ACCULAR series for mobile launchers of the LAR-160 MLRS, which are equipped with the 685 rocket and artillery battalion of the fourth naval district of the NRW. The area of responsibility of this military unit is the Nansha archipelago in the waters of the South China Sea.
Performance characteristics of jet ammunition of the EXTRA series: caliber - 306 millimeters, range - 150 kilometers, deviation from the target - 10 meters, weight of the warhead - 120 kilograms. Launchers of this MLRS are mounted on a cargo truck platform in an amount from two to 16.
ACCULAR series ammunition performance: caliber - 160 millimeters, range - 40 kilometers, deviation from the target - 10 meters, weight of the warhead - 35 kilograms. Israeli gunsmiths say about the long shelf life of ammunition without compromising their reliability.
Chinese experts note that Hanoi’s selection of Israeli MLRS for coastal artillery and missile forces cannot be considered optimal, since Russian Tornado-G caliber 122 millimeters have a comparable range of fire and large ammunition.
According to the SRV media reports, for the needs of the country's air defense units in Israel, the SPYDER anti-aircraft missile systems (one control vehicle and six mobile launchers) are acquired, which include Python-5 and Derby missiles.
The height of these missiles varies from 20 to 9000 meters, and the range is from one to 15 kilometers. They allow the destruction of aerodynamic targets (helicopters, UAVs) at short and medium range, which seriously complements the capabilities of the anti-aircraft artillery (23-mm and 35-mm) air defense.
Thanks to contacts with Israeli companies Rafael and Elta, Hanoi began to create its own missile defense system. To ensure its stable operation, several EL / M 2106 ATAR three-dimensional airborne radar stations were acquired, as well as EL / M-2084 MMR radar stations that are part of the Iron Dome missile defense system. The Vietnamese version of this complex allows you to intercept ballistic targets at a distance of 35 and an altitude of 16 kilometers.
Vietnamese experts emphasize the high resistance of the mentioned Israeli radar to interference, as well as the possibility of creating a single network of information processing when connected with the identification of "friend or foe" and communication stations.
Israeli experts recognize that it is rather difficult to gain a place on the arms market in those countries that for several decades received Soviet weapons and military equipment with high reliability. Obviously, with increasing tensions in the South China Sea, the military and technical cooperation of Israel and Vietnam will continue with the expansion of its directions. Hanoi closely monitors the cooperation of enterprises of the Israeli military-industrial complex with India and Korea.
India: both in friendship, and in special service
Israeli military-industrial complex became the fourth supplier of weapons and military equipment for New Delhi. At present, the level of mutual understanding between states is so high that Tel Aviv trusts Indian rocket engineers to launch reconnaissance satellites into orbit. The importance of Israeli developments is due in this case to the need to preserve the military-strategic balance with the PRC.
In 2015, the Indian Air Force adopted airplanes (according to unofficial data - four) of early warning and action control aviation G550, built by Elta, a member of IAI Corporation, on the basis of Embraer 145 civilian aircraft. They allow you to monitor the air situation for nine hours without refueling, but their main disadvantage is attachment to the airfield, since the radar equipment does not allow observation beyond a large sector of airspace.
To increase the Air Force’s ability to detect air targets and coordinate aviation operations, New Delhi allocated over three billion dollars in contracts for contracts with Israeli suppliers in 2016 in the year. Provision is made for the supply of the Indian Air Force of three sets of equipment for the Far-Range Radar Review and Control System (AEW) of Phalcon. The probable cost of the contract is 370 million dollars. The system will be mounted on Russian IL-76.
Note that in 90, Israeli experts have gained experience installing complex equipment in the People's Republic of China, where they have carried out modernization of Russian DRLOI A-50 aircraft. At the same time, modern Israeli radar stations and equipment make it possible to stably detect, identify, and track over 200 targets at the same time, at a distance of 800 kilometers and more.
In great demand among the Indian military UAVs are Israeli-made. It is known that in 2013, IAI received an order for Heron 15 reconnaissance drones (contract value 250 million dollars) with an option for 20 units, and in 2015 the Indian military contracted 10 BLA Heron TR (also Eitan equipped with a diesel engine) , flight duration - up to 37 hours). Probably, the Indian Air Force also acquired eight Searcher Mk.2 UAVs.
IAI, in collaboration with the Indian company Alfa, produces mini-class UAVs (Bird-Eye 650, weight - 30 kilograms) and Micro (Bird-Eye 400, weight - 1,2 kilograms). Israeli company Innocom for the needs of the Navy and the Air Force of India delivers Micro-class UAVs (Spider, weight - 2,5 kilogram and Bluebird, weight - one kilogram). The total value of contracts for these devices - 1,25 billion dollars.
Among other things, Israeli defense concerns are helping Indian designers to create their own weapons and military equipment models. So, Rafael specialists took an active part in the development of the Debi missile (air-to-air, medium range, active radar and infrared guidance). Corporation IAI provided radar with an active phased antenna array EL / M-2052 (it has proven itself well on the F-16 fighter jets). It was IAI that assisted Indian designers in building the Dhruv light helicopter: it provided electrical systems, instruments, sights and weapon systems.
To arm the bomber and fighter aviation units of the Indian Air Force, Rafael has acquired Spice-2013 high-precision aircraft munitions from 250. They are equipped with four guidance systems (satellite, inertial, laser and television), which guarantees the destruction of the infrastructure of terrorists, even in dense urban areas. The weight of 250 kilograms and high accuracy allow arming MiG-29 type aircraft with such ammunition and bombing at a considerable distance from objects (up to 100 kilometers). The only negative is the high cost compared to free-fall and adjustable bombs.
To enhance the capabilities of the Su-30MKI, MiG-29 and other fighters in the fight against ground targets, the Indian Air Force purchased from Israel 164 container systems for laser and optical guidance.
For the needs of the air defense units of the Air Force and the naval air defense of the Navy, Barak-8 anti-aircraft missile systems (Barak-NG) are regularly acquired. The complexes allow you to stably hit aerial aerodynamic targets at a distance of 70 kilometers.
IAI and Rafael corporations, in cooperation with Indian Bharat Dynamics, Tata Power SE and Larse & Toubro, manufacture mobile versions of the Barak-8 air defense system for ground forces, and also conduct R&D projects over promising medium and long-range air defense systems. The contracts are worth $ 1,5 billion.
To detect the launches of the BR and to provide guidance to the interceptor missiles, Israeli-made Green Pine Radar is used. It was these stations that allowed the successful testing of the national Indian missile defense system. For New Delhi, this is of strategic importance. In connection with the development of rocket technologies in Pakistan and the PRC, great attention has to be paid to the formation of its own missile forces and missile defense units.
Israeli company Elbit and Indian Windward are developing a surveillance and intelligence system for fleet. The basis will be Israeli UAVs Hermes 900 and Hermes 1500. The devices will allow for long-term patrolling of maritime borders, recognition and classification of vessels. And it is believed that they will help in the confrontation with the intelligence of the PLA Navy.
With regard to the ship's air defense, we note that the Barak-8 SAMs are being installed on modern patrol and destroyers, as well as on an aircraft carrier of national construction. In addition, the Israeli military-industrial complex received a contract worth 163 million for the supply of 262 anti-ship missiles Barak-1.
For the Indian Indian units, Israeli gunsmiths supply modern anti-tank guided missile systems Spike. A contract was signed for the supply of 321 launchers and 8356 rounds to them. Israeli companies are involved in the development of 155 mm caliber ammunition for self-propelled guns, as well as missiles for guns of the Indian national tank "Arjun Mk.1."
One of the latest joint projects - "Laser Fence". It is about creating a modern system of monitoring the state border line with Pakistan.
Israeli special services MOSSAD, ShABAK and AMAN trained Indian specialists in the fight against Islamists. In the IDF special forces trained three thousand Indian soldiers. The curator of military-political cooperation is Brigadier General of the Reserve Avriel Bar-Yosef, Chief of Staff on National Security Issues at the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister.
South Korea under the "iron dome"
Among the defense partners of Israel is the Republic of Korea, which is adjacent to nuclear-missile countries such as the PRC and the DPRK. With the active work of Pyongyang on the production technologies of ICBMs capable of delivering nuclear weapons, the leadership of Kazakhstan has to look for partners in the creation of a missile defense system.
Seoul is interested in acquiring the Iron Dome by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. The South Korean military is aware of the effectiveness of the system for intercepting short-range missiles and MLRS shells. According to Israeli engineers, it will provide reliable protection for Seoul against missiles. However, it is useless when using ballistic missiles.
According to Kim Il Soo, Ambassador of Korea to Israel, the Iron Dome fully satisfies the requirements of official Seoul, since it can be deployed in conditions of high population density and with a sufficient number of interceptor missiles, it can successfully operate with a massive (up to a thousand units) enemy attack.
In 2014, the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan approved the acquisition of a complex for the formation of a missile defense system for critical facilities. The contract value is 225 million dollars.
According to the plan of South Korean strategists, Israeli developments should complement the country's air defense / missile defense system, which is formed from the Patriot PAC-2 and Patriot PAC-3 SAM systems, as well as the AN / TPY-2 X-band radar. In addition to the US stations in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, EL / M2028 Green Pine Block B, developed by specialists from Israeli companies Israel Aerospace Industries and Elta, were put into service. These radars steadily detect targets at a distance of 480 kilometers, and the maximum range is 800 kilometers. In fact, EL / M2028 Green Pine Block B allows you to monitor the airspace of the DPRK and over part of the territory of the PRC and the Russian Federation.
Two similar radars in 2012 were purchased by official Seoul for 215 million dollars. The choice is justified by the use of Strela-2 as part of the Israeli missile defense system. This technique works more stably than the American one, while complementing the Patriot 48 air defense system.
The second in importance for the defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan were the ATGM Spike NLOS. The contract value is 43 million dollars. This modification is intended for placement on helicopters, light armored vehicles and ships (boats). Allows you to hit armored facilities at a distance of 24 kilometers. High accuracy and resistance to interference are provided by the use of several guidance systems: semi-active laser, television, infrared. The Israeli Spike NLOS is able to effectively deal with the armored vehicles of both the Korean People’s Army and other more advanced tank-building countries.
According to sources, since 1998, South Korea has acquired in Israel IWT for 1,5 billion dollars. In addition to the missile defense and radar systems, this is rocket armament and equipment for F-15K fighters: Recce Lite tactical reconnaissance system, Blue Shield container navigation system, air-to-air missiles, aerial bombs.
For various reasons, the leadership of the Republic of Kazakhstan is shying away from purchasing more American equipment. She intends to independently develop engineering and design ideas on missile defense and missile attack warnings.
Israel and RK are collaborating with 2001 in information security. The engineers of the two countries jointly create programs for secure access, data encryption and antivirus. By 2014, the volume of investment in these works amounted to 34 million dollars, 25 projects from 132 have already been implemented and have brought 25 million profits.
Obviously, Seoul will continue to work with Israeli partners to improve the missile defense system. This is also due to the fact that, in view of the compactness of the elements of the “Iron Dome”, they can be installed on surface ships of the Navy and will ensure the protection of the naval bases and ports of South Korea.
It should be noted that from the point of view of the national security of the Russian Federation, the supply of Israel’s weapons and military equipment to India and Vietnam, especially to Korea, which throughout its stories entered the sphere of influence of the United States, do not pose a threat. However, monitoring the status of weapons and military equipment markets in Asia is of fundamental importance for Russia.
