Romanian frigates in the 21 century. Part four

21
This is a continuation of the article about the Romanian frigates. The first part is HERE.

Back to the trek

After the once formidable Coventry with weapons at the level of the patrol boat went to the Romanians, it was time to try it on long hikes. And allies in the NATO bloc persistently reminded about the obligations of the member countries of the alliance. And with whom to fight on such a ship? Yes, except with an even weaker opponent!

And the Romanians sent their frigate “Reggele Ferdinand” to the coast of Somalia, to protect the World Food Program ships that deliver food to the people of Somalia. At the same time and impressionable Somali pirates scare.

EU anti-piracy operation "Atlanta"

The event was aimed at supporting the UN Security Council resolution adopted in 2008. The operation was the first joint naval operation of the European Union, also known as the EU-NAVFOR (European Union Naval Force).

Operation “Atlanta”. 16 September 2012, the frigate “Regele Ferdinand”, following into the Gulf of Aden, crossed the Bosphorus

Operation “Atlanta”. October 21 2012, the frigate “Regele Ferdinand” crossed the equator

Another opinion on the state of the Romanian Navy

An article with the intriguing title “We Shoot a Slingshot? Romanian Navy - piles of scrap metal. Sailors break the silence. ”

The author of the article, Razvan Mihayan (Razvan Mihaeanu), informs his readers that the affairs of the sailors are not brilliant. On the contrary, the state is catastrophic. The author refers to the recognition of the sailor from the frigate “Regina Maria”, who wished to remain anonymous.

In March, 2015, the 12 ships that are part of the NATO 2 Mine Group (SNMCMG 2), conducted joint exercises in the Black Sea. Ships from SNMCMG 2 practiced actions to combat enemy submarines, provide air defense for the naval grouping, and also maneuver ships. The exercises were attended by 6 ships of the Romanian Navy, among them the frigate Regina Maria. The author quotes a sailor from the frigate “Maria”, who informs him that the exercises turned into a complete failure:

Not all machine guns were able to fire and they were revived with the help of screwdrivers and some kind of “Romanian mother”.
Then the ship, which was to simulate an attack on the frigate “Regina Maria”, was informed that air support would arrive in 2 minutes.
But the support planes “appeared” late in 20 minutes, and far from the given square ...
This, and not only this, happened before the eyes of the Minister of Defense of Romania.
The Minister of Defense Mircea Soul (Mircea Dușa) left the exercise with a face twisted with anger.
He ordered to prepare lists of necessary for repair and send ships to shipyards and docks.
But I'm sure that nothing will change, because like story repeats almost after each exit of the ships in the sea.

Since “THIS” * became the main one, the Romanian fleet has begun to deteriorate before our eyes.
Every evening he gathers senior officers in the mess-rooms, where they get drunk as an insole.
And in the afternoon they spit overboard and feed fish and seagulls.

* Commander of the Romanian Navy Tiberiu Liviu Chondan. (Translator's note.)

Further, the Romanian author, referring to a telephone conversation with the Minister of Defense, concludes that "he is angry, but helpless." As proof, the author quotes:

I really ordered to prepare repair documentation. The frigate will pass the second stage of modernization. I can’t tell anything more by phone, and I’m on maneuvers ...

Since March, 2015 has passed enough time, but things have been there.
Moreover, despite the fact that most of the ships of the Romanian Navy urgently need repair, they participate in exercises like Sea Shield 2015.
Thus, the words of the sailor from the frigate Regina Maria are confirmed.

Personally, the situation reminds me of a story with the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, the frigate “Getman Sagaidachny”. (Translator's note.)

At the end of the article, the author informs readers that in the event of a military conflict, Romania is able to wage only a partisan war.

So, from the 3 of the Romanian frigates only one “Mereshesht”(The brainchild of Ceausescu) is fully armed and equipped. True, outdated Soviet designs. Anti-submarine mission assigned to 3 deck helicopters Puma Naval.

In addition to its frigates, Romania can oppose 6 missile boats:
3 of the 1241 project ship (cipher “Lightning”) F-188 Zborul, F-189 Pescăruşul and F-190 Lăstunul from the 150 division of rocket corvettes.
3 of the 205 project ship (Mospit cipher) F-202 Smeul, F-204 Vijelia and F-209 Vulcanul from the 50 division of patrol ships.
The rest are not able to withstand the connection of ships of a potential enemy (for example, the Black Sea fleet Russian Navy). Yes, and the above missile boats, like Romanian frigates, are armed with outdated Soviet models.
The 150 division of the missile corvettes also includes the Rubezh coastal anti-ship complexes as part of the 8 PU.

In the event of a military conflict, the Romanian Navy can count on air support of some formations, namely:
86-I aviation a flotilla (the city of Fetesti, on the Danube) consisting of the 861st and 862th fighter squadrons (24 MiG-21 LanceR) and the 863rd helicopter squadron (10 strike transport helicopters IAR 330 L).
For reinforcement can use and combat training aircraft: 6 IAR-99 and 8 IAR-99 Șoim (Shoim) from the 951-th training squadron.
In the event of an invasion from the sea, the 2 of the Volkhov C-75M3 C-XNUMXMXNUMX division will guard the airspace.
The 307 brigade of marines (Babadag city, Dobrudja region) will be involved in the protection of coastal sites.

The ground forces in that area will be represented by the 9-th mechanized brigade “Mereshesht” as part of the 6-and battalions:
2 Infantry Battalion (341 and 911),
912-th tank battalion,
911 th artillery battalion,
168 th battalion of support,
348-th battalion of air defense.
The brigade is located in the region of Constanta and is subordinated to the 2 Infantry Division.
The armament of the brigade includes military equipment 70-ies, for example, the Soviet tanks T-55 and ZSU “Cheetah”.

In short, “the enemy will not pass” ...

Upgrade example

The history of the flagship Chilean Navy’s “Almirante Williams” (FF-19) is very instructive. This ship is from the same 2 series (subclass Boxer), brother of Coventry, now Regina Maria. It will be about the former frigate of the British Navy Sheffield (F96).

Both Sheffield (F96) and Coventry (F98) were built at the Swan Hunter shipyard. Moreover, both ships were ordered in 1982, laid on the same day (29.03.1984), launched with a difference of 10 days (in the spring of 1986), transferred to the Navy and put into operation in 1988 year. The British sold the Sheffield Navy of Chile in the same 2003 year, when they sold the 2 of the same type of ship (London and Coventry) to Romania.

There are several conflicting opinions about the configuration in which the British sold Sheffield to Chileans. I found several descriptions with different composition of weapons and equipment. But it is known for certain that, before becoming the flagship, “Admiral Williams” went through several upgrades. Unlike Romania, in Chile, approval of frigate modernization projects proceeded without delay, and money was always in the budget for the fleet.

On the official website of the Armed Forces of Chile indicated the following data:

weaponry
1 is a universal 76,2-mm ship-mounted “OTO Melara”.
2x PU for PKR “Harpoon” (on 4 container);
2x PU for ship-based missile systems Barak 1 (for 8 container *);
2x automatic 20-mm anti-aircraft guns Oerlikon;
2x 3-Pipe 324-mm TA Plessey STWS Mk 2;
4 7,62-mm machine guns.

* According to unconfirmed data, there are 32 containers with the Barak 1 SAMs on the launcher.

Radar station
1x Multi-purpose two-coordinate radar Marconi type 967 / 967M;
1x Multi-purpose three-coordinate radar S-band (2-4 GHz) Elta ELM-2238 3D-STAR series;
2x radar fire control Elta ELM-2221 STGR.

Means of EW
2x 12-barrel 130-mm PU passive interference Terma SKWS.

Hydroacoustic complex
Podkilnaya GAS Type 2050.
Towed GAS Type 2031.

Aviation Group

On board the frigate “Admiral Williams” is based one helicopter AS 532SC Cougar (deck version AS 332F1 Super Puma) from the French company “Aerospatiale”.

The main purpose of the Chilean Deck helicopter Cougar is to conduct anti-ship and anti-submarine operations. For this, depending on the situation, they can be equipped with anti-ship missiles Exoset AM.39 or torpedoes Mk. 46 combined with submersible GUS. The helicopter can also be used as a means of delivery for special forces, for conducting search and rescue operations or for evacuating the wounded. For these purposes, helicopters have the option of mounting the side boom with a winch.

Helicopter Cougar Navy of Chile with suspended RCC Execet

Helicopter Cougar Navy of Chile with side boom

The helicopters of the Chilean Navy installed optoelectronic reconnaissance stations MX-15 from the company “L-3 Veskam” (Canada). The pilot flight piloting system includes sets of night-vision goggles that facilitate combat use in the dark. Also, the helicopters are equipped with ASSIST systems, which ensure the landing of machines in conditions of strong pitching.

According to unconfirmed data, AS 532SC Cougar helicopters plan to replace (or purchase) the machines of the same company AS 365 Dauphin: the successors of SA 316 “Aluett”, which were in service for about 40 years.

          Once I showed my spouse photos with Sergey’s catch.
          She said that we have nothing to do with such a large fish: there is no suitable herring chamber.
          I offered to use the bath and she praised me for my quick wits.
          Therefore, I asked Sergei to pack the taimen in a "big herring" and send it by cash on delivery to Chisinau. feel

    It is doubtful that the MiG-21 modernized with the help of Israel and the S-75 air defense systems built in the USSR at the beginning of the 80's will be able to withstand modern combat aircraft. Romania is currently the only European country where C-75 is still on duty. The value of these rarities in modern conditions is very arbitrary.

      Even more doubtful is the effectiveness of the combat-training aircraft IAR-99 from the 951 training squadron.
      As tanks T-55, ZSU "Cheetah" and so on.

      The moral spirit of the Romanian military is a separate topic for conversation.
