The Latvian Ministry of Defense submitted to the government a draft of new rules that simplify the rules for entering the territorial waters of NATO ships "in connection with the changing security situation in Europe", reports RIA News message resource mixnews.lv.
Ventspils, Latvia
“In connection with the changed situation and taking into account the obligations of Latvia as a NATO member country, it is necessary to ensure as soon as possible the arrival of allied forces in Latvia. This applies both to military doctrines and potentially crisis situations, ”the Defense Ministry quotes the resource as saying.
According to the portal, “at present, the order in which foreign warships enter the territorial waters of Latvia, establishes the rules of the Cabinet of Ministers adopted in 2010 of the year”.
“They provide for a complicated and time-consuming procedure for coordination - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues permits for entering the Latvian waters, and in general, three ministries and the National Armed Forces participate in the coordination process,” explains mixnews.lv.
The Latvian government has pledged to review the new rules, “reducing the bureaucratic burden on the participating bodies in this process,” February 23.
