The formation of the 790th IAP began after the defense of Odessa on October 20, 1941 on the basis of the 69th fighter aviation regiment. In March 1942, the unit became known as the 790th Fighter aviation regiment". In early August 1945, the regiment was relocated to the Shchuchin airfield in the Grodno region. In April 1952, the regiment was placed at the disposal of the commander of fighter aircraft air defense and relocated to the Tver (Kalinin) region at the Khotilovo airfield. The regiment entered the Moscow air defense system.
In 2009, in connection with the transition to the new look of the Armed Forces of Russia, the 611 th Fighter Aviation Regiment, based at the Dorokhovo airfield in the Tver region, was disbanded. Part of the 611-IAP was included in the 790-th aviation regiment, in which the 3 aviation squadron with Su-27 aircraft was formed.
Currently, the 790 Fighter Aviation Regiment is called the Aviation Group of the 7000 Guards Borisov Pomeranian twice Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Aviation Base (1 discharge), although I will still use the old division name in the report, it is more known.
The current composition of the 790-IAP includes three air squadrons: 1 AE on MiG-31, 2 AE on MiG-31 and presumably one MiG-25PU, 3 AE on Su-27 and Su-27UB.
