The United States may refuse anti-missile missiles for ICBMs
Congressional sources say the United States may stop developing advanced missiles for missile defense systems that could pose a threat to Russia's intercontinental ballistic missiles.Significant budget cuts may cause a complete cessation of the Pentagon’s SM-3 2В interceptor program. It was planned that they will be equipped with a global US missile defense system and its European component.
According to the available data, the reduction in expenditures on missile defense is caused by new intelligence data, which caused the US administration to review its priorities in creating a missile defense system. Now more emphasis will be placed on creating protection against regional missile threats to the detriment of protection against ICBMs.
The SM-3 2B interceptor is capable of shooting down both tactical missiles and the latest types of intercontinental missiles.
According to the Pentagon’s plan, these interceptors were to replace the SM-3 1A and SM-3 IB. The latter were planned to be placed in the European component of the system in the initial stages of creating a global missile defense system.
In Europe, the first improved anti-missiles were to appear by 2018. All the old missiles, which are capable of shooting down only tactical ballistic missiles, were planned to be replaced by the 2020 year.
To date, the Pentagon has also completely stopped the purchase of GMD antimissiles, used to protect the country. These intercontinental ballistic missile interceptors are currently located only in California and Alaska. Plans to increase the number of GMD, as well as their placement in other parts of the country, the US administration does not have.
