Brigade combat power

The transition in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation from the divisional structure to the brigade and the formation of heavy, medium and light brigades in the Ground Forces necessitated checking the combat capabilities of the formations. How effectively can each of such brigades confront a conditional enemy in the conduct of a maneuverable defense, smash it in an offensive, defeat in a head-on battle? What will be the fire and maneuverability of heavy, medium and light connections? This kind of research was started at the General Headquarters of the Ground Forces.

As a spokesman for the Office of the Press Service and Information of the Russian Defense Ministry for the Ground Forces Colonel Oleg Yushkov told Red Star, a group of generals and officers of the General Staff of the Ground Forces led by the Commander-in-Chief of this type of Armed Forces Colonel-General Alexander Postnikov conducts a comprehensive study of combat capabilities heavy, medium and light brigades created in the Ground Forces on the basis of the Totsky and Samara motorized rifle formations, as well as airborne assault formations deployed in olgogradskoy area. This study will end in the fall with tactical combat brigade exercises. Naturally, by that time, the brigades must learn to act as efficiently and smoothly as possible in order to demonstrate in practice their full strength in target shooting, in speed and coordination of maneuvering, in controllability of subunits. Only one thing follows from this: in the summer, intensive planned combat training should be conducted in formations. And she is on the ground in the Volga is in full swing. First, a single training, then the coordination of offices and platoons, during which are specified fire capabilities of these units. By the way, as Colonel Yushkov noted, at this stage some adjustments are not excluded in determining what exactly the squad and platoon personnel should be armed with.

Mouthing will be done on company tactical exercises, including bilateral ones. During the MOUTH, both firing and maneuvering capabilities of the mouth are to be studied. Then the study of these opportunities will rise to the battalion level. And only after that it is planned to conduct brigade exercises with live firing from each of the brigades: with heavy, medium and light. Brigade TUs will allow to draw final conclusions about the combat effectiveness of each brigade, their strengths and weaknesses in actions on the battlefield, and the capabilities of the supporting units. Based on the conclusions that will be subsequently made by the officers and generals of the General Staff of the Ground Forces conducting research, it is possible that the organizational structure and the number and composition of the weapons and military equipment of the newly formed formations will undergo certain changes.

Recall that in the course of formation of the Ground Forces, which began in 2008, a transition took place from the four-tier command and control system (military district-army-division-regiment) to three-tier (military district-army-brigade) and 85 brigades were formed. The peculiarity of these compounds of constant readiness is that they are capable of engaging in combat without carrying out mobilization measures.
