Police carbines family KS-23. Part three

16
This is a continuation of an article about carbines of the KS-23 family. The first part is HERE.

Over time, a rather wide range of 23 mm ammunition of various types of action was developed for the KS-23 carbine: with rubber and plastic bullets filled with a canister or with inert training firing containers, with CS “Lilac” chemicals, and also idle (with expelling charges): for shooting locks and throwing special grenades. Attempts were also made to expand the possibilities of the carbine by creating for it cartridges with solid bullets (lead and steel), as well as a canister. The result met expectations, but at the cost of exceptional effectiveness of ammunition there was a high value of recoil force. weapons. This made the designers take up the development of similar 12 caliber cartridges and smooth-bore guns for them.

Characteristics of some patrons for carbines of the KS family, which were produced by NPO Tekhnika at the Scientific Research Institute of Special Technology, later renamed PKU NPO Special Equipment and Communications.

Perhaps this is a complete list of 23-mm cartridges with explanations.

Judging by the comment of the user with the nickname “Gross kaput” - there is an ammunition for emergency opening of doors.
Most likely, this is the “Wave” cartridge, in which the training inert grenade was replaced either with a plastic container filled with compressed bulk material like sand, or with a bag of small lead shot.

Also “Gross Kaput” mentioned the Lilac-7M munition.
It may have been developed, but Google knows nothing about it.
Most likely, this is the “Lilac-7” cartridge with a high concentration of irritant CS and an effective range increased to 150 - 200 meters.

To increase the effectiveness of weapons, over-caliber gas grenades (36 and 82 mm) and muzzle nozzles for shooting them were developed.

In addition, the cat's muzzle attachment (OC-06) was developed, allowing to throw a cat-hook with a rope attached to it at a distance of up to 35 meters, or to the height of the 7-th floor of a residential building. “Cats” was designed 2 type: with folding “legs” (OTs-06-03) and with fixed “legs” of anchor type (OTs-06-02).

Literally before the release of the article, I discussed with Vadim, my friend and a veteran of the special unit of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova, the advantages and potential of the carbine. It turned out that the carbine KS-23 is in service with the “Panther” detachment, my friend made several shots of it at the trunk of a dried-up tree and appreciated its power and effectiveness. He added that gunsmiths could well have adapted the above-caliber nozzles from “Bird cherry” to shoot off the network container. A carabiner-setter would be useful for special forces soldiers.

Modifications

For several years of operation, not only the strengths, but also the weaknesses of the KS-23 carbine were revealed. The operators came to the conclusion that a bulky carbine longer than 1-meter with a massive wooden butt is not always suitable for carrying out operational activities. The Air Force and the Ministry of Internal Affairs asked for more compact weapons, while maintaining the excellent fighting qualities of the basic version. And at the beginning of 90-ies in the framework of the implementation of the theme “Thrush” such a version appeared.

KS-23M "Drozd" (Special 23-mm carabiner modernized). The work on the subject “Thrush” began in the same Research Institute of Special Machines in October 1990 of the year, and already 10 of December 1991 of the year, an experimental batch of 25 carbines under the code C-3 entered the tests.

The tests were successful, and in the same year the upgraded version of the carbine was assigned the index KS-23М “Drozd” and it was adopted by the police and internal troops.

From the basic version of the upgraded carbine KS-23M “Thrush” differed shortened on the 10, see the trunk and the lack of a wooden butt. The butt was replaced with a plastic fire control knob and developed a removable T-shaped metal shoulder rest (skeleton butt).

In the comments, KardeN met the following data on the nomenclature: KS-23-1 (with a butt and barrel of standard length), KS-23М (short barrel, removable butt) and also KS-23-1М - the barrel is short, but the butt is constant.

For firing from the modernized CS “Drozd”, the whole range of cartridges used for firing from the KS-23, including barrel nozzles “Cat”, “Nozzle-6” and “Nozzle-12”, is used.

Despite the fact that the carbine KS-23M "Thrush" is more compact than its predecessor, he inherited the main drawbacks of all weapon systems equipped with a tubular magazine, namely: low rate of fire, low magazine capacity and the inability to quickly replace the type of cartridge used. The following version of the carbine is devoid of these shortcomings: KS-23K.

About myths

Extract from the forum “Weapons” (oruzheika.mybb.ru)

Although nothing is said about this relationship on the official website of the Tula KBP, most likely, the author of this statement is right: since both RMB-93 and GM-94 used a constructive scheme with a moving barrel, the magazine in both samples is located above the barrel, and ejection of spent cartridges carried down.
The principle of reloading in both samples is also identical: dismounting of ammunition occurs when the barrel moves backwards (“towards itself”), and the sleeve is removed when the barrel moves forward “away from itself”.

Carabiner KC-23М in the cinema

The film "Swing", 2008 year.

With endless patrons in the cinema, it seems to be getting tighter, but even without that, there are enough “jambs”.

For example, in the movie "Swing", a fighter with a barrel nozzle for throwing grenades for a hundred and a half meters does not have a place in a stormed building, but in a shelter, at some distance from him. Who watched the movie, he remembers that in this picture KS-23M did not find any use for himself.

Those. According to the author, the attachment does not allow the use of the rest of the range of ammunition except for the PV-23 bundle and, in this case, "Ch.12"? A bold statement laughing
The video about the cathedrals pleased the commentator's childlike spontaneity - "the shooting is being carried out with live ammunition" and right there in the frame the fighters storming the premises and firing from the AK-74M with installed blank firing bushings - definitely set off!

I wanted to say that in the film a fighter with a carbine equipped with a nozzle for shooting over-caliber gas grenades entered the stormed building.
And it was shot so for the sake of entertainment:
in the hands of a fighter, a hefty gun and with some mysterious thing on the muzzle should impress the viewer.
About the credibility did not think, or fended off.

I do not agree about ALL weapon systems with a tubular magazine. For example, smooth-bore semiautomatic devices all have a tubular magazine (we’ll omit AK clones), this doesn’t particularly affect the rate of fire, and with an elongated magazine it can fit up to 9 rounds. Just in the case of the COP has certain nuances, the use of a cartridge of a very large caliber. Rapid ammunition replacement is achieved by installing a cutter.

come on?! I often missed in this life just once to hammer 9 rounds into a pipe does not take more than changing the "box"? There is one more small nuance - the balance of the weapon, which on a saiga or boar practically does not change from the number of cartridges in the store, but on the pump, especially with a 9 local pipe, the number of cartridges in the store will be very noticeable - 9 cartridges of 12 calories will average 350 400 gr.

Oh, is it? If you take police / combat rifles, then about fifty / fifty - at a glance -Valtro PM-5, SPAS-15, LW-3, Hawkanti-riot gun, Jackhammer, XM-26 LSS, AA-12, RAS-12 / AR- 12, USAS-12, MAG-7, SAS-12 - in general, if we talk about combat rifles, then the box rules here and the pipe is mainly used on "conversion" of hunting systems, on hunting semi-automatic machines the pipe is quite justified and since the days of the Browning car -5 is considered a classic solution.

Perhaps this is a complete list of 23 mm cartridges with explanations. Taken from the “Guns”.
PV-23 cartridge idle let's just say - PV stands for "knockout cartridge" - in principle, if you bang them without a nozzle and a grenade, then it will go for a blank laughing but in general it is designed to shoot grenades from the nozzle.
PV-23M ... for shooting locks this moment always killed me, some deer decided that the "knockout cartridge" was intended for knocking out locks launched this crap on the Internet - as a result, even on more or less adequate resources, they continue to repeat this nonsense - PV-23 and PV-23M are intended exclusively for shooting Ch6 / Ch12 grenades from barrel attachments, the differences between them are only in the design in the PV-23, a mounting / blank cartridge is inserted into the 26 mm sleeve, made on the basis of the cut-off Mosin sleeve, the PV-23M has a "classic" design with a blasted charge of the "Falcon" ... "Shoot off" the lock that PV-23 and PV-23M can only be hammered into the barrel of a piece of iron that will break the lock. laughing For "vsemdeleshnie" knockout cartridges have as a "knockout element" a bag with small lead shot or a plastic container with a cylinder pressed from various bulk materials.

So the question is not about "errors" - the question is about the approach - there is a minimum of information on the hardware itself, there is not a lot of information on tactics and experience of use, there is complete confusion for b / n - the funny thing is that there are official "postcards" with the correct description in front of the plate - but a lot pictures, comp. toys and films - you will forgive, but my IMHO that in this form the article is at the level of "pop.meha." and cannot claim serious work.

Further "Wave-R" and "hello" are one and the same - or rather a rubber bullet "hello" is a part of the "wave-R" cartridge wink
"Bird cherry-7M" and "Lilac-7" are there, but for some reason they forgot about "Bird-cherry-7" and "Lilac-7M". In general, the author scrupulously rummaged through all the computer games and films where the COP flashes, described the German kampfpistole and other nuances that are indirectly related to the subject of the article, but for some reason he didn't really bother to sort out the ammunition and laid out someone else's damp plate belay

Somehow I missed the private -True, the RMB-93’s ammunition is dispensed when the barrel moves “away from you”, while the GM-94’s vice versa: when the barrel moves “towards you” A bold statement! Do the Tula people know about this? laughing
And in the RMB and GM-94 the sleeve is removed when the barrel moves forward and the cartridge is sent when moving backward. And in this they both differ from the KS-23 and other classic pumps.
