Construction of the most powerful frigate in the world has begun in Germany
At dock 12 of the Hamburg shipyard, the laying ceremony of the first F125 class frigate took place. The ceremony was organized by the ARGE F125 working group consisting of representatives from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, Blohm + Voss Naval GmbH and Friedrich Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co.
In accordance with the schedule was laid the first section of the frigate. In implementing this project, the German shipbuilders intend to once again demonstrate their high innovative level and production potential. The frigate is designed for deployment in the composition of the coalition forces of defense and crisis prevention, support for humanitarian actions, the fight against terrorism and asymmetric threats. The frigate is one of the most modern ships of this class in the world.
The stunning versatility of the frigate is achieved by applying the latest innovations. Despite a significant reduction in the number of crews, the frigate of this project has capabilities far beyond the capabilities of other ships of this class.
The construction contract was signed in 2007 and provides for the construction of four ships. The commissioning of all ships is scheduled for the 2016-2018 period. The program also aims to save jobs in the German shipbuilding industry.
Certificate of armament frigate class F125
The ship will be armed with an automatic 127 mm artillery unit of Melara, for which, according to Aviation Week, guided munitions with a range of up to 100 kilometers are being developed.
Earlier it was planned to equip this frigate, whose tasks included fire support of the landing (the space for 50 marines was provided on board the ship), installing 270 mm mm 227 MLRS and Kraus-Maffei Wehrmann turret, with the aid of the Kraus-Maffei Wehrmann X-gun, However, according to the NavyWeaps website, they refused these plans.
Each F-125 frigate will carry two helicopters - anti-submarine NH-90 or Tiger type drums.
The frigates are armed with a modular installation of a vertical launch of the MK 41 type, which provides for various combinations of anti-aircraft, anti-ship, anti-submarine and cruise missiles. In particular, the frigate is equipped with Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles.
