Designers from the UK presented the concept of a warship of the future

33
The concept of the battle ship of the future, which was presented by British designers, literally blew up the Internet space, giving rise to a wave of comments around the world. It is worth recognizing that the previously unknown British military agency with a pretty beautiful marketing move was able to loudly declare its existence to the whole world. The British managed to achieve this by presenting to the public sketches of the warship of the future for the British fleet called "Dreadnought 2050."

This draft project was created as part of the program to develop the innovative potential of the Royal Navy. The concept of the Dreadnought ship 2050 was presented by Startpoint, which was recently created by the UK Department of Defense. Startpoint is set to debut in September 2015 in London at Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI), which will be held in the English capital from 15 to 18 in September.

The Startpoint agency’s tasks include promoting British maritime support systems (we are talking about modern e-stuffing, “brains” of warships - navigation systems, ship armament control systems, information systems, integrated control systems, sensors, etc.) in the international market . In fact, we are talking about the promotion of products of private companies in the UK under the patronage of the state (almost a private-public enterprise). On the other hand, Startpoint is going to attract developers of modern marine systems to cooperate with the Royal Navy and assist companies in the implementation of their ideas and products to the fleet. Representatives of the agency are going to pay special attention to the creation of marine unmanned and robotic systems.

Named in honor of the British warship, presented to the public in 1906, the Dreadnought 2050 has all the futuristic attributes that must be inherent in promising warships of the 21st century. At one time, Dreadnought (English intrepid) - the British battleship with a displacement of about 20 thousand tons and weapons from 10 guns caliber 305 mm - with its appearance made a real revolution in the naval business, becoming the founder of a whole subclass of ships of the line. The ship was so superior to all previous models that it divided all warships into those created before and after the appearance of the Dreadnought.

In this regard, the creators of Dreadnought 2050 decided to keep up with their illustrious predecessor. What is worth only the idea of using the power plant, working on products of hydrogen synthesis! If this technology remains unattainable, the developers of the concept are considering the option of using highly efficient and quiet turbines that will power the electric motors and other systems of the ship. The declared speed of the future battleship will be at least 50 nodes.

For the hull of the Dreadnought 2050, the drafters of the concept chose a trimaran scheme that will allow the ship to maintain stability even at maximum speed during heavy seas. At the same time, all three hulls of the vessel are provided with ballast tanks, which will ensure the partial immersion of the ship for better camouflage. New lightweight, heavy-duty alloys and composite materials were chosen as the material for the hull, and it is planned to cover the underwater part with a layer of graphene (a special form of carbon), which will significantly reduce the friction of the ship's hull on the water. In the rear of the ship's hull, it is planned to install a retractable ramp, along which the marines will leave the ship, as well as launch flying, floating and underwater Drones - carriers of various weapons. To replenish the “stocks” of these unmanned aerial vehicles, it is planned to place a special workshop on the ship, which will receive 3D printers and stocks of the necessary materials and ready-made components, including electronics, for the production of unmanned aerial vehicles directly on board.

Concept developers do not specify the exact size of their futuristic warship, but said that their project with a crew of 50-55 people can replace a modern warship with a team of 200 people. Based on this information, it can be assumed that Dreadnought 2050 will be comparable in size with US Zumwalt-class destroyer squadrons that have a displacement of 15.000 tons.

One of the main attractions of the ship Dreadnought 2050 was its control room, which looks more like a control room of the spacecraft from numerous science fiction films. A large holographic display will be installed in the wheelhouse. On this display, all current tactical and operational information received from the sea surface, from the depths of the sea and from space will be displayed in a clear and convenient way. Automation and a carefully thought-out interface will allow the captain and also 5 officers of the warship to fully control the situation on board.

Surprisingly, the presented concept of a warship of the future has only one weapon - an electromagnetic rail gun. The parameters of this gun are not very different from those of the railguns that are currently being tested by the US Naval Research and Development Administration (Office of Naval Research), and which are able to produce specialized projectiles at a distance of 200 km. To protect against small vessels of the enemy, the developers plan to use laser and microwave weapon medium power, and for the defeat of large surface ships and submarines on board the Dreadnought 2050 will be torpedoes that can reach speeds of up to 300 nodes by using a special graphene coating and the phenomenon of supercavitation.

In case of such a need, a promising combat ship will be able to launch a probe into the sky, which will be connected to the ship with a special superconducting cable with cryogenic cooling and a cable made of carbon nanotubes. In this case, for the operation of the sensor system for the early detection of a large amount of energy is not needed, but a powerful combat laser with a large radius of action, also installed on this probe, will need energy. This probe “on a leash” is planned to be used for reconnaissance and protection of the ship against enemy missiles.

“A number of futuristic technologies will have to push the existing boundaries of science and technology, and we currently see no reasons or limitations in order not to include these technologies in our draft design,” noted Startpoint agency agency Mure Macdonald. According to him, all the most interesting innovations in naval technologies: rail guns, lasers, drones and sensors will consume a lot of electrical energy. Only large warships can produce this electricity in the required volumes. Generating a large amount of energy will not only increase their weaponry and lethality, but also provide a greater level of viability. Currently, all the state-of-the-art technologies identified in the project seem to us to be something of a fantasy category, but in the future they can become much more accessible, which will solve many problems with less financial and labor costs, said Mur MacDonald.

At the same time, according to Mark Steele, who holds the post of business development director at Startpoint, the concept of the warship of the future presented by the agency pursues educational goals. According to him, they wanted to challenge British graduate engineers to encourage them to start thinking about the capabilities of the naval combat support systems that will be introduced into future offshore platforms of the new type and are likely to differ significantly from existing warships today. It is no coincidence that the draft design of the new ship was shown in the famous QinetiQ technopark near Portsmouth, where the British military research center specializing in the design of unmanned marine systems has been located since 2014.

Well, all the same, there is a certain slipping in fantasy - the ship of the future and drones, but where are the space attack aircraft on atomic hydrogen?

people, for left criticism? I’ve seen in my life a cell phone mutation from a brick to kill, to a record or how a computer has changed. the authors of the project did not present anything fantastic. the fact that right now the electromagnetic gun is bad does not mean that after 35 years it will not work. it’s ridiculous to read you, you are talking babble, like some kind of shkolota. or is the complex sitting in you, what do Britons already think about such ships, but we still cannot launch a normal series of ships?
damn the people, you have to be older. in this ship already existing technologies are presented (in the form of experiments and experiments), only refined over the next 35 years.

Imagine: a man was born in 1961. During his life, he never saw: cheap flights into space, bases on the moon and manned flights to Mars, industrially effective thermonuclear fusion and communism. Although certain technologies were (except for communism). It depends on what you compare it to.

you are replacing concepts. cheap access to space, bases on the moon, and flight to Mars could be done in a short time, and all the technologies for this are already available, only nobody needed this, first of all, to the political leadership capable of such states. Brezhnev period, what is not communism for you? Social engineering is a very specific issue to put on a par with science and technology. according to thermonuclear fusion there is a suspicion that science is following the wrong path. there is such a pinworm physicist, he argued in a video that the main evidence of a thermonuclear reaction, the release of helium, never happened, in any experiment. it turns out the wrong direction.
What is needed for this ship? there are lasers and microwave guns and they are constantly being improved, there are high-speed torpedoes, even the principle of operation has been worked out on a serial model, there are holographic screens, there are whole representations of the laser show, the electric gun is experimental and working on it, only graphene remains, but with his appearance, I saw such enthusiasm in the media that I’m almost sure that this direction will not be abandoned. and what is the most important thing in all this? the demand for weapons for all and its high cost, which is equal to the high income of arms corporations. flights to Mars, bases on the moon are needed by dreamers and enthusiasts, but so far no one will be involved in politics, but they will be weapons. therefore, 80 percent sure that by my 60th birthday all the necessary technologies will be present. another question will this ship be sculpted or will they come up with something else? :)

Thanks to Sergey for the translation. I read comments on this news in various Internet publications 10 days ago. Not everyone is approving, especially any technical editors "pleased" ... It amused that one on one, like comments on VO, when discussing the prospects for the development of battleships, often do not pay attention to the obvious advantages, emphasizing more on the natural issues of operation (like. .. minefields, how to get through, and if a torpedo for 10 thousand, and if a bunch of missiles).
I will express my opinion - heavy ships are necessary as a class. How heavy (far from 50 tons))) ekranoplanes are needed.
BUT (such a big thing) - it's up to the experts ...

The logic is that a lot of energy-intensive things are needed and a lot of space is needed (for generators), as a result a larger ship, more steamer more expensive, more expensive - you need thicker armor (so that you don’t immediately drown if that), thick armor - voila ... dreadnought ...

All this is like rolling out a concept car at a Detroit auto show (or somewhere else), beautifully, mesmerizing ... but having little to do with the real future. Without a revolution in the energy sector, this will remain a vivid picture.

I really like the Western approach to building ships. The Navy has always been the skate of the major Western powers. Of course, the first 4 seconds, I also thought that this was only a concept, but looking closely, I saw real prospects.
An UAV is very good. The experience of using UAVs in real combat shows that UAVs are the future of war. Jammers and EMPs? Eh ... We do not live in the 19th century, gentlemen. Now even helicopters have protection against EMR and jammers. Moreover, promising UAVs can work autonomously (they can do it now, but they mean 100% autonomy, even in choosing a target.).

A ship with a scheme in 3 hulls is a very stable ship. Simple and efficient.

The only thing that does not please me in this concept is the cannon, it’s not clear what caliber .... And the way to launch torpedoes. Of course, it would be possible to make torpedo sites to the side hulls, although they are most likely occupied by ballast and controls.

In general, the concept is very suitable.

What is not know-how is the "development" of designers. Soon, the designers will do the missiles ... the most important thing is that it would look "pretty" and the interesting one was "cool" ... combat effectiveness ... no, have you heard "what is this"? It seems that the people of "Star Wars" have seen enough.

In general, the ship’s design is quite competent in general. The only thing is that it’s too early to write off missiles, but here they aren’t there at all. But in general, everything is done in the spirit of the future. For the most part, the use of UAVs and UAVs is the future just for that.

And the future is not so far away - one of the main 'highlights' of the 5th generation submarines is precisely the use of UAVs, which will be the basis of their armament. Yes, there are already submarines, and UAVs and UAVs are gradually being introduced on NK. ...

Yes, the point is just not in the design, the design of the ship is controversial of course, but it does not cause rejection. It just feels like designers are starting to determine our future, this is infuriating. I believe that practicality and technical feasibility, the economic component, and ergonomics and design are already in the first place.

Prototypes of this ship have long been developed by AUSTAL (Australia) http://www.austal.com/en/products-and-services/defence-products.aspx and are quite successfully operated by several countries for military and civilian purposes. Therefore, giggling at the unusual shape of a promising vessel and the "stupid" Western shipbuilders is not too boring. But to learn and something useful to adopt does not interfere at all.

A ship with a 3-hull layout is a TOO stable ship. Its transverse metacentric height is very high, therefore, in lateral waves, the amplitude and sharpness of rolling will be significantly higher than that of a single-hull, up to the impossibility of using weapons and total crew problem. That is why the overwhelming majority of ships are made according to a single-hull scheme. Size, of course, does matter, but Peter the Great sometimes rolls around too, why is there ...

Starpoint is a state office of the type of the Bandera office "Horns and Hooves", which itself has nothing to do with development, and the task of developing something for this office was not set. This is a typical customer representation created for the purposes described in the article. And I wrote specifically about the developers, one of which is Austal.

"Dreadnought", early 20th century, is a revolutionary type of ship, to which, however, it took a long time. The Russo-Japanese War prompted the creation of the Dreadnought. That is, certain conditions were created for such a ship to be born. But who knows whether such conditions will exist in 35 years. How many fantastic projects have found themselves in our time? We don't fly to other stars, cars also move on the ground. Leap boats do not fly, we wear clothes, a little better than 30 years ago, etc. In general, the future has not yet arrived. laughing
