General Dynamics Land Systems M60 Tank Upgrade Program to "120S" Level

The problem of modernization tank M60 ...

Emerging military technology left behind the M60 tank. For decades, the armed forces have been looking for a solution to modernize the M60 tanks. Until recently, there were no effective technologies that allow to increase the level of mobility, destructive effect and survivability of the M60 tank.

Innovative solution ...

General Dynamics Land Systems has combined its great success in working on the M1A1 "Abrams" tank program with 40 years of experience in the development and maintenance of the M60 tank. It was decided to combine the qualities of both cars in a tank of available advanced technology. The proven tanks МХNUMX and М60А1 "Abrams" are now connected to a strong, reliable and powerful combat system - tank 1S.
The 120S program offers a method of upgrading the M60 tank to improve its performance and suggests a minimal tank upgrade in the future. It provides excellent protection for the crew in the turret with isolated workplaces, as well as critical hull locations. The tower combines the firepower of the 120-mm cannon, a promising fire control system and a prospective target detection and capture system. The mobility is improved due to the installation of a hp 1200 diesel engine. and transmissions of the Abrams tank with elements of the M1А1 tank suspension, such as torsion shafts, rotary type shock absorbers, support rollers and a light track.
This real, affordable upgrade method provides a leap forward in firepower, mobility, survivability and logistical capabilities. The 120S program leads obsolete tanks in the 21 century.

Benefits of modernization

■ Precise fire control using digital technology.
■ High damage effect of the 120-mm gun combined with a digital computer and an advanced IR front viewing system (FLIR).
■ Increased speed and mobility with increased power and improved suspension components.
■ Ability to provide parts and assemblies from US Army stocks with characteristics and reliability tested in combat.
■ Unsurpassed durability due to the armor of the M1А1 tower and the isolation of workplaces.

Armored Technology Partners

For 50 for years, General Dynamics Land Systems has been leading the development of world-class combat vehicles. This well-established position is the result of uncompromising superiority in design, technology and production, along with the presence of experienced, skilled workers. Constant advancement in engineering, the improvement of materials and production processes help supply the troops with reliable and affordable combat vehicles. General Dynamics Land Systems continues to actively participate in meeting the specific requirements of consumer countries. Currently, the company operates worldwide servicing over 14000 tanks in numerous layouts. Programs range from refitting equipment within the country of the consumer to the development of national production and a network of suppliers.

Features of the tank 120S:

1 - power plant: serial diesel engine connected to the XXXUMX-1100 transmission of Allison from the M5А1 tank and onboard transmissions. There are alternative power plant options;
2 - connecting device of the tower and the hull: a simple receiving ring allows you to use the main shoulder ring of the tower of the М1А1 tank without changing the tower;
3 - sponsons / side screens: side screens for ballistic protection, providing a level of protection for the М1А1 tank. New sponsons for storing equipment, batteries and additional options for fuel tanks;
4 - suspension mounting: the design allows the use of the suspension elements of the M1-1 tank without modifications;
5 - tower: the tower of the M1А1 tank is adapted to the chassis and equipped with a 120-mm gun, advanced electronic equipment; jobs commander, gunner and loader surrounded by a set of armor plates that do not contain depleted uranium. The tower also has a ventilation system, a system for protection against weapons of mass destruction (CBR), a fire control system, an intercom system, a stabilization system, and a fire protection system;
6 - torsion shafts: serial high-strength torsion shafts of the M1А1 tank increase to the maximum the movement of the track rollers, improving the movement over rough terrain, speed and maneuverability;
7 - 120-mm gun: capable of firing all types of NATO 120-mm ammunition, common to the entire fleet of tanks M1А1 and М1А2;
8 - GPS / FLIR (Global Positioning System / Front View IR System): tested in combat and insulated. Enhancements include a vision-safe laser range finder and an 2-generation thermal imager with a receiving array containing either 240 × X4 or 480 × X4 elements.

layout options

The basic conceptual layout is proposed on the basis of the technology tested in combat technology tank M1A1. This design can be modified to meet the specific operational needs of customers. Additional material options may include:
external additional power unit;
additional digital command and control computers;
thermal monitor of the commander (FLIR 1-th or 2-th generation);
thermal radiation control system;
onboard integrated digital diagnostic system (BITE);
other combinations in the power plant.

The program of modernization of the tank M60 company General Dynamics

The 120S program offers a method of upgrading the M60 tank to improve its performance and suggests a minimal tank upgrade in the future. This innovative program combines proven modern production technologies into a full combat complex. The use of the general material part of the M60 and M1А1 tanks led to the creation of a fully acceptable 120S system with a sharp increase in the damage effect and survivability.
The 120S program is built around a reliable, proven running system for the M60 tank. This sturdy platform is being upgraded with an 1200 horsepower engine. and transmissions, final drives and tracks of the M1 series tanks. The firepower of the upgraded tank is enhanced by installing a M1-1 tank-tested turret with an 120-mm cannon and an advanced 21-century fire control system. The 120S program combines high mobility, perfect firepower and survivability into an affordable and effective combat system.

    Hmm, it looks beautiful, but it eats two questions: first, how much does it cost? Secondly, who needs it? After all, the United States has a bunch of abrams, which, for the most part, are almost never used and a few units are lost in battles. It turns out - export. And here we come back to the issue of price.

        I would like to believe, but there is no evidence other than the recollections of Soviet advisers.

            In 1982, my father was a tankman and at that time was an adviser to the commander of the 96th tank brigade, 5th armored division, 1 corps of the Syrian army, and so he doesn’t remember such a case, like his colleagues who were Syrian advisers at that time. And you forgive me here probably read? http://otvaga2004.narod.ru/otvaga2004/wars0/wars_14.htm so you don’t have to believe everything they write, but how it is written on the fence ... well, there’s firewood there.

              I bow to your father for his service to the Motherland at its distant frontiers, but you must admit there are many things about which we learn from official sources only many years later, and the fact that the Germans used the top-secret Panzerkampfwagen VI “Tiger I” is very similar to that story.

                Do you mean participating in the hostilities near Leningrad at the end of 1942 as part of the 502nd heavy tank battalion? and what are the parallels here?

                  It’s absolutely true, there, too, a new top-secret technique was introduced into the battle, to put it mildly strange (well, you know the details), but there was a fact of the Tiger’s downfall

    All the same, it is necessary to modernize (there are a lot of tanks) in the USA.
    M60A1 - 3400pcs.
    M60A3 - 5430pcs.
    They will make two options, for themselves and cheaper for export.
    Turkey M60A1 / A3 - 1120pcs., They also dream of updating.
    Greece - 669pcs., Spain - 244pcs. There are enough customers.

      I did not think that they have so much of this junk, although this mshina is similar to the Arams of the first versions of the Abrams themselves, they have more than 8000 and these probably are simply preserved.

    Wow, this is M1A1 Abrams. An exact copy ... Pindos will boil them into any Saudi Arabia or Qatar. Definitely!
    But our dol ... couldn’t make at least traveling armored personnel carriers on the basis of the T-55 tank or more! After all, it’s much cheaper and better ... But no, joiners and carpenters from the main stool of the headquarters will not be welded in. It’s too troublesome pocket does not rustle ...
