Latvia intends to build a fence in several parts of the Latvian-Russian border in order to combat illegal migrants, the newspaper reports Look With reference to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic Richards Kozlovskis.
According to Kozlovskis, “the plan of the border arrangement with Russia envisages the creation of a border zone with a width of 12 meters along the entire length of the border”.
“The possibility of building a fence at several sites is being discussed, but if the fence is not equipped with appropriate technical means, it will not be able to stop the flow of refugees,” the minister said.
“It is necessary to ensure a sufficiently wide border strip so that border guards do not have to move through the jungles that are there now, so that they can quickly respond to violators while moving on quad bikes,” Kozlovskis added.
He clarified that the Vietnamese are illegally crossing the eastern border. “Latvia sends these people back to their homeland. But these illegal immigrants are not from Vietnam itself, but from Russia, where they once worked in both the illegal and legal spheres, ”the official said.
The newspaper reminds that in August Kozlovskis stated that a concrete wall protecting the country from migrants could appear in four years. According to him, only about € 214 mln. Will be needed to set up the 17 km of the border.
