PTS-4 floating conveyor is one of the best in its class.
PTS-4 was created to replace the obsolete floating conveyors PTS-2 and PTS-3, which were produced in the USSR in the 1970s and 1980s. Their production was established in Lugansk on the chassis tanks T-64 Kharkov plant of transport engineering. The design of the chassis of the new PTS-4 uses elements of commercially available main battle tanks: caterpillars and torsion bars T-80, gearbox and friction clutches T-72. The weight of this tracked floating vehicle is 33 tons, which is comparable to the weight of 7 African elephants. Despite its considerable weight, the car feels great both in the field and in the reservoir, demonstrating an excellent level of buoyancy. The maximum speed on the highway is - 60 km / h, afloat - 15 km / h. The vehicle's carrying capacity is 18 tons, and the cruising range (fuel) on land is 587 km.
Currently, floating tracked conveyors PTS-4, which are produced in Omsk at the plant of transport engineering, are considered the best in its class. At the military-technical forum "Army-2015" held this summer in the Moscow region, PTS-4, which is in service with the engineering units of the Russian army, was shown for the first time. The Quartet was created with extensive use of components and assemblies of the T-72 and T-80 tanks. This conveyor is designed to cross various water barriers of various types of military equipment: vehicles, towed artillery, armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. Also, floating conveyors can be used when conducting various rescue operations during natural disasters, for example, when spilling rivers. The crew of the car consists of two people. The remote-controlled large-caliber 12,7-mm machine gun is used as a weapon. According to some military experts, in the near future, perhaps, the emergence of a new floating tracked conveyor using nodes promising heavy tracked platform "Armata".
The PTS-4 tracked floating transporter can not only ship military equipment, personnel and various cargoes through water barriers, but also carry these cargoes in wetland or rough terrain, which makes the car quite versatile. True, this significantly reduces the capacity of the track conveyor. Also, the tracked carrier can be used in amphibious assault forces. For this purpose, additional equipment is specially installed on it: two pumps designed for pumping water with a capacity of 800 and 400 liters per minute, special protection for glazing, a sealed awning, exhaust extensions and gyro-compass. PTS-4 floating conveyor can be used for its intended purpose in case of rough seas up to 5 points.
Taking into account the fact that the plant in Omsk received the task to develop the fifth generation conveyor, in the process of creating the PTS-4 a very large amount of research and experimental work was carried out, which included the search for the most rational and efficient technical solutions, as well as their subsequent processing and run-in. In particular, the issues of the size and shape of displacement hulls were studied, various types of propulsion systems, floating control systems for conveyors, bilge pumps, and so on were sorted out. Considerable attention was paid to the developers to improve the throughput of the new tracked conveyor, especially at the stage when the machine entered the water and emerged from the water on land. The roll angle was increased to 25 degrees, and the angle of overcome climb / descent - to 32 degrees.
In contrast to the predecessor cars, the same PTS-3, the new floating conveyor became heavier by 8 tons due to an increase in carrying capacity and the appearance of a reservation that meets modern requirements. In particular, the PTS-4 control department received a bulletproof booking. Thanks to the use of the engine, it was possible to increase the speed of movement of the floating conveyor both on the ground and on the water surface. And the increased fuel capacity allows the conveyor to overcome a much greater distance at one gas station. For self-defense, a remote-controlled large-caliber machine gun was installed on the tracked carrier.
The average floating tracked carrier PTS-4 was created to replace outdated transporters in service with the Russian army, as well as due to the fact that all production of these combat vehicles had been in the territory of Ukraine since the USSR (Lugansk). All PTS conveyors of the previous series were manufactured on the chassis of the main battle tank T-64, which was also manufactured at the Ukrainian enterprise (Kharkov). The new PTS-4 transporter is based on the chassis of the T-80 tank and is completely manufactured by Russian enterprises from the Russian components.
The tracked floating conveyor consists of a waterproof hull with a crew cabin and a cargo compartment, which has a tailgate. The engine is located approximately in the central part of the conveyor body, which increases its stability afloat and the reliability of the transmission of torque to the water and tracked propulsions, as well as to the winch. On PTS-4, the developers abandoned the location of the screws in the tunnels and installed them in special guide nozzles that were installed behind the stern of the machine. At the same time, a double water steering wheel appeared behind each of the screws. Due to the presence of these design solutions, we managed to increase the maneuverability and controllability of the PTS-4 afloat, especially when the conveyor was moving along curved paths. When rotated afloat with the rudders, the circulation radius of the PTS-4 is approximately 80 meters, and when rotated in the operating mode of the propeller screws, it is approximately 20 meters. As the track conveyor moves over land, the screws are raised and pressed against the tailgate. When lowering and lifting the tailgate, the propulsion and steering complex moves along with the board.
The floating conveyor is unloaded and loaded on land through the folded back side, which is equipped with ramps. Technique comes on board under its own power. Self-propelled military equipment moves with the help of a special mechanical winch, which is located in front of the loading platform of the conveyor. This winch can also be used for self-pulling of the PTS-4 in a situation where the coastal relief does not allow the transporter to go ashore (while unloading the machine is much more complicated and the time required for this operation is increased). Structurally, the engineers provided for the possibility of a simultaneous crossing of the tractor and the artillery system towed by it, which in this case is loaded onto a floating wheeled trailer, which is included in the PTS-4 kit. Maneuverability and speed of movement at the same time significantly fall (almost 30%).
The PTS-4 floating conveyor has an armored crew cabin, which is equipped with a filtering unit. Also, the machine has a device for self-digging. Technically, it is possible to install mounted suspension shielding on the conveyor. In the cockpit are communications equipment, as well as equipment that allows you to drive a car, even at night and in poor visibility.
It is worth noting that PTS-4 has been repeatedly used during rescue operations in flood zones in our country and in a number of other states. With the help of these machines, evacuation of civilians, property, livestock from flooded areas was organized, as well as the establishment of water and food supply to the population, first aid in areas that were cut off by flooding.
