Intelligence chemical machine РХМ-5 ("Wagon D-1")

A chemical reconnaissance vehicle designed for the Airborne Forces was created by specialists of Volgograd Machine-Building Company VGTZ LLC back in the year 2002. The company, which specializes in the development and production of airborne assault vehicles, created the РХМ-5 “D-1 wagon” (“958 object” with five single-rollers on board) based on BMD-3 (“950 object”). Photos of the prototype of this machine could be found on the pages of thematic military publications. Creating such a vehicle on the basis of the BMD-3 was the logical decision, since the troops needed equipment on a unified chassis. The mass of the new car and its driving characteristics remain the same as that of the base BMD-3. Production of PXM-5 was launched on the basis of CJSC Tula Plant in the year 2009. At that time, the novelty of the domestic defense industry was favorably distinguished by the presence of a remote-controlled 7,62-mm machine-gun installation, which could be attributed to “revolutionary” solutions for the Russian military equipment.

Despite the fact that the release of the RHM-5 "D-1 Carriage" was launched in 2009 year, this combat vehicle was an infrequent visitor to large military exhibitions. One of the first public demonstrations of the machine was the military-technical forum "Army-2015", which was held in the Moscow region in June of this year. At the same time, this instance of Russian armored vehicles was somewhat “lost” against the background of other more well-promoted exhibits of the military-technical forum. Although, in the opinion of many Russian military experts, the “D-1 cart” is a truly unique combat vehicle, nothing of the kind exists in any other army in the world.

According to the manufacturer’s website, the РХМ-5 “D-1 cart” is intended for radiation, chemical and non-specific biological reconnaissance, as well as ensuring the transfer of reconnaissance data to an automated troop control system weapons mass destruction in complex meteorological and topographical conditions, as well as at night. The machine is able to successfully overcome the artificial and water obstacles. The use of a reconnaissance chemical machine makes it possible to obtain real-time reconnaissance information about the radiation / chemical / biological and meteorological situation with its display on a map in the reconnaissance vehicle, as well as at the information receiving point. Thanks to RHM-5, the command is able to monitor the implementation of tasks by subordinate calculations and promptly update the tasks depending on the changing situation. The paratroopers from the calculation of the machine when monitoring in the area of ​​their parts are able to control the chemical situation in a radius of up to 6 kilometers and promptly notify the troops about the use of chemical weapons.

In the department of management, located along the axis of the combat vehicle, there is the place of the driver, in the middle section (in the fixed wheelhouse) the places of the senior chemist (on the left) and the commander of the machine (on the right and slightly behind) are located. The multifaceted welded armored wheelhouse with a flat roof is welded to the hull and rises above its roof in 340-350 mm. In the cabin there are weekend and intake openings designed to take aerosol and air samples from the atmosphere. They are connected through tubes and electric air valves with radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance devices, which are assembled in a special rack of the instrument section, located behind the seats of the PXM-5 combat crew.

The welded armored housing also contains sets of sampling and fencing signs, containers for storing drinking water, a PSF is installed in the right-hand side niche (filtration unit). On board the РХМ-5, the “D-1 Carriage” is a special protection system for a nuclear explosion that provides automatic sealing of the hull and shutting off the main power supply and power units for the duration of the shock wave of the explosion. Taking into account the possible work in the conditions of radioactive contamination of the terrain on the floor of the RHM-5 control department and the middle section, beneath the members of the calculation are protective steel anti-radiation screens 10 mm thick. When driving in contaminated areas, the sealing of the habitable compartments of the machine is preserved. In this case, the engine compartment remains open, the engine is running, and the combat vehicle can throw an attempt to overcome the contaminated area. The control compartment on the right side of the driver keeps tanks of the tank degassing kit, which are intended for partial degassing of the combat vehicle chassis. In addition to the standard radio station, as well as on the base machine, the РХМ-5 “D-1 Carriage” is equipped with an additional radio receiver in the wheelhouse. The existing air heating system is able to facilitate the work of the crew in the cold season.

Thanks to the equipment on board, the RHM-5 provides the crew with high protection from the effects of the use of weapons of mass destruction by the enemy. Since this machine was originally designed for the Airborne Forces, it is adapted to landing from military transport aircraft using multi-dome and jet parachute systems. It is possible to land with the crew inside the combat vehicle. The RHM-5 is equipped with modern means of conducting RHB reconnaissance, including gas detectors and dose rate meters (IMD), as well as the GLONASS satellite navigation system, which greatly facilitates the crew orientation process in difficult terrain conditions. In addition, on board the machine there are modern means of processing and transmitting data, setting the trigger alarm of chemical alarms and a radio station.

For self-defense, on a rotating commander’s turret, a machine gun of 7,62-mm caliber with a remote control and external power supply is installed on the cabin roof. The course installations from the car were removed, but the embrasures in the starboard and the aft hull of the hull remained. 6 of Tucha grenade launchers were mounted on the logging sides.

Successful trials of the first three production models of the PXM-5. The airborne troops completed in March 2012. According to representatives of the Airborne Forces, the first three production vehicles that entered service with the Russian Airborne Forces successfully passed the control tests, which were conducted at the training ground of the 106 Guards Airborne Division in the city of Tula. Two of the tested combat vehicles were then sent to Pskov to equip units of the RHBZ from the 76 Guards Air Assault Division. In the same spring, they took part in the field exits of the subdivisions and the gathering of specialists of the RCBZ Airborne Forces. Another PXM-5 combat vehicle was left as part of the regular RCBZ unit of the Tula airborne unit.

“The tests carried out became a clear confirmation of the high performance and capabilities of the new chemical reconnaissance vehicles. In the course of testing the equipment, the specialists of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Service of the Airborne Forces, together with representatives of the manufacturer, mastered the full equipment installed on the machines, including modern tools designed to determine the level of contamination of objects, devices for automatic transmission of data on the results reconnaissance, equipment of the satellite navigation system GLONASS ”, - noted the representatives of the Airborne Forces. All in all, the Airborne Forces of Russia received at least six PXM-5 “D-1 Carriage”. Currently, they are in service with the units of the RHBZ 106 airborne and 76 airborne assault divisions.

The power plant is a diesel engine of liquid cooling 2В-06-2, HP power 455.

The maximum speed on the highway - 70 km / h, afloat - at least 10 km / h.
