MiG: Between hearing and the future

The Russian Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation, whose planes are known throughout the world and even are in service with the NATO Air Force, has made a rapid leap forward in the past few years.

About the past achievements of the RAC "MiG", about the present day and the prospects for development, our conversation with the corporation director Sergei Korotkov.

Sergey Sergeevich, tomorrow opening of the largest International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2015. What will show RAC? What will be especially interesting for ordinary viewers and professionals?

Sergey Korotkov: At the air show, our corporation represents the main line of fighters produced by us. At the static parking and in the air, guests of the exhibition will be able to see serial aircraft MiG-29ММТ, MiG-29М / М2, MiG-29К / КUB and MiG-35.

Such modern high-tech combat aviation complexes require serious training of high-class pilots. Therefore, I want to especially note our modern simulator with 3D visualization. This technology provides the development of the most difficult flight modes, such as landing on deck, refueling in the air, flying systems. Until MAKS 2015, we did not show it on a moving platform, which significantly increases the accuracy of flight simulations. The simulator, which accurately repeats the behavior of the machine in the air, is sure to become one of the main innovations of this MAKS.

The crown of the flight program of the air show will be a joint flight of the legendary fighter of the Great Patriotic War MiG-3 and the promising combat aircraft complex MiG-35. We decided to devote this historical project for the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory, which our country celebrates this year.

Military-technical cooperation is one of the important aspects of the corporation’s activities. What results in this respect do you expect from MAKS and in the near future, in general?

Sergei Korotkov: To begin with, according to last year’s results, our activity as a subject of military-technical cooperation was highly appreciated by the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation of Russia.

Within the framework of MAKS-2015, we have a serious business program scheduled. In the coming week, we will hold a series of meetings with European delegations, as well as with our colleagues from Southeast Asia.

What developments of RAC "MiG" cause the greatest interest at international exhibitions?

Sergei Korotkov: If we talk about new aircraft, then, of course, this is the MiG-35. I believe that this fighter has good prospects in the global market. The latest solutions in the field of electronics and weapons closely bring this car to the fifth generation.

Serious interest exists in the modernization programs of the MiG-29 fighter, which is in service in the 29 countries of the world. We have a wide range of modernization options from which the customer can choose the best one for himself.

What is the sum of the MGC contracts on MTC last year executed? Which of our partners purchased the most Russian MiGs?

Sergey Korotkov: In 2014, the corporation fulfilled its contractual obligations in the amount of about 800 million dollars. The greatest amount of work we performed on the order of the Ministry of Defense of India. This also applies to the supply of new MiG-29K / KUB fighters, and the upgrading of previously delivered aircraft under the MiG-29UPG program. Today, the corporation’s actual order book is about 4 billion dollars.

As you know, it was in the MiG design bureau that the story of the 5 generation fighters began ...

Sergey Korotkov: It really is. In 1990's, in our design bureau, the 1.44 project was created, which, to my great regret, fell into a transitional period and was not implemented in the series. Then our whole country experienced great difficulties. This project was able to bring to a certain stage, the built fighter even flew into the air. However, it was decided to stop work on this aircraft. A serious backlog, which remained from the implementation of the 1.44 project, is used by us in new projects.

Today RAC "MiG" is working on a promising fifth generation project. We hope that our developments will be in demand and will be translated into a real project in the near future.

Today, the corporation’s actual order book is about 4 billion dollars.

At what stage is the work to create a promising PAK DP interception complex?

Sergey Korotkov: Today it becomes obvious that the nature of the threats from air and aerospace attacks will change over time. There will be a partial integration, which will require the creation of new means of protection. The government understands this. The confirmation is the creation of a new type of Armed Forces - the Air and Space Forces of Russia.

Interceptor fighter - the most effective mobile means of protection of aerospace. I believe that this direction will develop. I note that our designers have unique competencies in this area.

Does the corporation today have the opportunity to bring promising developments to mass production? Are the production resources enough to ensure the fulfillment of all the tasks set by the country's leadership?

Sergei Korotkov: In recent years, the country's leadership has been paying close attention to the development of the defense industry. I gratefully feel the support of the country's top leadership, the Ministry of Defense and the KLA in all the endeavors of our corporation.

In recent years, we have managed to achieve a steady increase in production in both physical and monetary terms. Suffice it to say that the corporation's 2014 revenue exceeded 2013 in 30%. From year to year we are increasing the supply of fighters on state defense orders and for export. There are good prospects for new orders. At the production sites of the corporation is technological modernization. We are optimizing our production facilities, and we do this in semantic and functional cooperation with the Nizhny Novgorod Aviation Plant Sokol, which historically produced MiG fighter aircraft.

The experience of consolidating the efforts of enterprises within a single corporation shows positive results. This makes it possible to optimize production. Are there plans to inject the Sokol plant into the overall structure of the RSK?

Sergey Korotkov: Yes, this decision has already been made. In the coming 2-3, the Nizhniy Novgorod enterprise will be integrated into RSK MiG. This will make it possible to effectively solve several tasks: to centralize administrative and managerial functions, to ensure a uniform load of all enterprises and to eliminate duplicate production with a general optimal rhythm of work of production units. The merger will allow our corporation to reach the level of revenues of more than 2017 billion rubles by the year 80.

The last days there are rumors that you will leave the post of the head of the RAC "MiG" and take some other post. It was mentioned that such rearrangements can occur against the background of the active development of the corporation. Is it so?

Sergey Korotkov: Rumors are not true. I will explain why. For many years, the MiG, however, like our entire defense industry, was in a stage of stagnation. I came to the enterprise to realize the tasks that were set before me by the leadership of the country. This development and the actual implementation of promising projects of the MiG, which in the next decade will fulfill the main task - will become a new generation of military equipment. This is also an expansion of the corporation's order book. Do not forget about the plans to create high-tech production based on the technical re-equipment of enterprises and the formation of an effective quality management system. Victory in the air is forged on the ground - this is the motto of the Russian Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation "MiG". We are one of the leading defense companies that have already become the starting point for the revival of the former power of our state. This is a serious strategic task on a national scale. And I am obliged to perform this work in full.

Everything is ghostly, everyone is confused with "Phantoms" -
There is a strong helm, hold on to it.
And for the lever that’s called a catapult,
It is he who guarantees life.

    MiG-25 - this is a legit car,
    Can reach the gray pyramids,
And to the stars that I need on shoulder straps to me
    Will carry MiG, dazzling MiG.

May Washington not demand too much, -
Suddenly by chance will I appear above him?
What I cherish, what I risk in heaven
    MiG one, only MiG one.

Yes, it must be admitted that lately our Air Force has relied on Sukhoi aircraft and there are a number of reasons for this: SU are heavy fighters: Su-27/30/33/35 (PAK FA); these are front-line bombers Su-24/34 (the last one can fight an equal battle against fighters of generation 4 and even 4+); these are excellent Su-25/39 attack aircraft (the whole world knows not by hearsay about survivability, unpretentiousness and versatility of use).
Su-planes are in great demand abroad, which cannot be said about light Mig fighters ... In Soviet times, the Mig was synonymous with the USSR Air Force, not Su, but after the end of the Cold War, the situation changed.
Now, thank God, there is a contract with India for the shipborne version of the MiG-29K for the Vikramaditya, and the Russian Air Force also needs the Long Arm of MiG-31 interceptors (in terms of bringing them to the MiG-31 BM version), but when these contracts, what will happen then with the Russian "Light / front-line fighter"? I really want to believe that the MiG-35 will really go into production and will not remain a beautiful promise (to say nothing of the MiG-29K, at least for Kuznetsov). Otherwise, our Air Force may forget about a light fighter (after the dilapidation of the MiG-29s in service) ... sad

It's just that Poghosyan was more of a man of the new era and knew the paths to power structures, and his MiG visa-a-vi, RA Belyakov, was less "advanced."

Well, somewhere like that. Yes, Sukhoi was, and probably will be in favor, especially since Russia does not seem to have aircraft carriers. But as a specialist who has repeatedly trampled underfoot the territory of "Red October" I can only say one thing - for the MiG - glad! By the way, on Lytkarinsky "Saturn", too, stomped.

Everything could be put into a much shorter phrase "By the time the state order appeared, Woo Su had a family of cars ready for production (due to the fact that they were actively exported), and Mig had only projects and a list of failures."
It remains to hope that the state will not abandon the "Migovtsev" and will hold out until the moment when they can declare themselves again. And in fact, there are plenty of reasons for pessimism.

How do you think the Su-34 can lead an equal battle with fighters 4 and 4+, have you seen enough movies? Normal take-off weight is 39 tons, maximum thrust with AL-31 is 25 tons, with AL-41 is 28 tons, calculate its thrust-weight ratio, the MiG-21 will carry it out in close combat. To get started, read the performance characteristics of aircraft before writing nonsense. How he awakens to twist loops, barrels, imagine a military turn. This is the bomber on which the radar was installed, it is not clear why, as a result, it’s not a bomber even before the fighter, as it is to heaven.

1). For generation +4 it is said - "And even".
2). For "Dog Fight" having PGO and all the excellent pedigrees of the Su-27, the Su-34 can fight equally (We are not talking about complete dominance in the sky).

            1) You still think what "and even" is. For explosives, the Su-34 has an RSD explosive. But a weak radar, sharpened for work on the ground, negates this advantage.
            2) He has a low thrust-to-weight ratio - a deformed engine, the placement of the pilots is in-line with a "bomber view" from the cockpit. PGO - to improve the VPH and reduce the imbalance of the machine, and not for dogfight. )

Su-brand aircraft are in great demand abroad, which cannot be said about the MiG light fighter ...

The MiG's problem is that, as a light fighter, it initially had an absolutely insufficient range. Even the joke was about "fighter gaining air supremacy over middle-range drive".
Mikoyanists began to rectify the situation. We increased the fuel supply, along the way improved the avionics ... as a result, the light fighter approached the SMT modification in mass to the Su-27 and lost almost all the advantages of a light vehicle (maneuverability, thrust-to-weight ratio, etc.). It turned out to be a kind of "second Su-27", but with practically no reserve for further modernization. And the larger Su-27 still had reserves in terms of volume and weight.

Plus, the MiG's reputation was undermined by the Ethiopian-Eritrean war, when the MiG-29 met face-to-face with the Su-27. The heavier Sukhoi cars won - and in a number of battles the MiG-29s were forced to leave the battle due to the fact that there was only fuel left in the tanks to return to the base.

    ... a modern simulator with 3D visualization.

It’s already pleasing, burn less kerosene, the resource of engines, glider, etc. is saved. Of course, the simulator will not have the same load on the pilot’s body as in real conditions ... However, it’s great to work out aircraft control skills at a minimum of costs. It would be good if there were enough resources and money to put them in combat units.

I’m afraid that by the time the MO decides to purchase the MiG-35 of the 4 ++ generation, it will become obsolete. And among foreign military departments, interest in him will be small. It is time to abandon this business and focus on three areas: a light (possibly even single-engine) fifth-generation fighter, a long-range interceptor and a relatively light strike UAV.

A fighter pilot, this is an improviser, the car will never have these qualities. The fourth generation will rule for a long time, even the states cannot currently create a machine that meets all the requirements of the fifth generation, and for the price they are such that you will send divisions of previous generations to accompany them.

I don’t confuse anything, just these fantasies are still very far away, a person will always command a machine, such as a fighter. The number of functions of cars increases in fighter jets, but they won’t be allowed more, it’s excluded, even the states are excluding it now, because you know, it may happen that passenger planes start to fall from the sky, that's why a person will control the car. This is not a robot with a machine gun, but a fighter with tremendous capabilities.

Just the same you confuse everything.
The fifth generation fighter is still a human-piloted vehicle, i.e. the pilot sits directly in the cockpit. Saying that the States have no APIs? Well, we will not talk about the F-35, firstly, it has not yet been adopted for service; secondly, according to some experts, the "penguin" does not meet all the requirements for APIs. But what about the F-22? In your opinion, the Raptor is not the fifth generation?

This means that in addition to the RF Air Force, the RF Navy and the Indian Navy, this year or early next year, there may be another, so far unnamed recipient of MiG fighters. Although according to another version, this is a pre-production prototype of the MiG-35 for the Russian Ministry of Defense.

There are enough people who want to buy the MiG-35, we need a go-ahead from the management and it looks like it happened. The Air Force Commander said that the MiG-35 will go as a super-maneuverable fighter and at the same time it is much cheaper than Sushki, and its combat radius is not bad. It will carry RVV OBD, target designation containers. I hope AFAR will still remain in the complete set, as soon as in this case it will be able to carry the RVV BD, the "BEETLE" does not pull on it.

The most powerful cars at the moment, these are fighters of the 80-90s, the fifth generation, both ours and the staff, stands aside and smokes. By the criterion of cost effectiveness, the fourth generation with pluses, at least an order of magnitude superior to the fifth. About the new, why everyone considers the Su-35 a breakthrough, but not the MiG-35? Two samples are being prepared, they will carry the RVV BD missiles as well as the heavy fighters, the MiG-35, this is our only fighter that did not get fat as a result of modernization, target design containers are being developed for it along with the RVV BD. Its radius of action is increased to 1200 km, the same for the Su-30SM, for this engine is being finalized. Do you think this is not enough? Work is underway on a promising interceptor, the fifth generation is being developed, but the focus is on the MiG-35 and on the interceptor. At the moment, they are much more needed, the MiG-35 is much cheaper than Sushek (45-50 million green versus 65-80 million Su-30SM, 100-120 Su-35) and at the same time it surpasses them as a fighter.

Unfortunately, the shortage of young specialists will continue to affect for a long time, especially given the current opposition from the outside, it must be said that it is organized and massive enough, but we don’t get used to survive in difficult conditions, our ancestors had to survive, survive, and our children will not disappoint - they fool around a bit and reach with their own mind that there will not be and will not be another such country and people. MIGU: new starts and clear skies!

young professionals need to be paid with dignity

Young people, if the company is interested, should be hired out in the second or third courses, according to their abilities, and motivated to work at this particular enterprise (plant, design bureau, etc.) morally, financially and taking into account their specialization. Then the company will come, more or less expected, and not a "pig in a poke". Only, I feel, with this approach, different "managers", the khan will come what

In its Soviet era, in the 80s. MAPO them alone. Dementieva, together with the plant in Lukhovitsy, produced one Mig-27 aircraft (Mig-29, not sure) per day, 30 aircraft per month, 300 aircraft per year.

At that time, I had to go to Moscow early on Mondays on the Ryazan Road. Regularly, a convoy of trailers with Migami (fuselage, wings) to Lukhovitsy moved towards Moscow from Moscow accompanied by the traffic police.

    This is only one Mig!

And the MiG-21 was produced even more. The Soviet Union produced up to 1300 front-line aircraft a year. Russia is unlikely to build that much in ten years, and the areas are "optimized" for the most part.

About MIG-41 (interceptor), it’s conditionally called that which will replace the 31, with a lot of talk and a lot of hype.
Let's see if there are realities under all this.
I am convinced that the Mikoyanovites with their experience, school, traditions write off oh how early and I think they will surprise us, and upset the adversary to the impossibility.

To create a replacement for the Mig-31, you need a constructor of the Lozino-Lozinsky level. Where to get these now? There are really few designers, even fewer sensible ones - ducks and them survive, you yourself understand what’s the matter.

Good people, that you all remember the old days. It is unbelievable that this KB exists at all .. And it is slowly recovering. I think that Sukhoi should be engaged in fighters, and the MIG should focus on the continuation of the legendary 31st and work on the Lozino-Lozinsky spiral.
Because a light fighter must be with one engine.
