Pistol Bergmann No.2 Model 1896 of the Year (Bergmann No.2)

Having received negative reviews on tests in the Swiss army, his first pistols, and despite the lack of demand in the commercial market, Bergmann did not leave the job. Together with Luis Schmeiser, for two years, active work was carried out to improve the design of the pistol. In 1896, three immediately non-experimental, but commercially produced models of pistols came to light: Bergmann No. XXUMX caliber 2 mm, Bergmann No. XXUMX caliber 5 mm and a limited number of pistols Bergman No. XXUMX caliber 3 mm.

In this article, we look at the design features and variations of the 5 mm Bergmann Pistol No.2 Model 1896 of the Year (Bergmann No.2 / 1986).

The automatic pistols of the 1896 model of the year used recoil of a free spring-loaded shutter. Early Bergmann pistols No.2 trigger was foldable and was located in front of the store. A pusher is mounted on the left side of the frame, transmitting the trigger force to the remaining parts of the firing mechanism.

The barrel of the early pistols has an octahedral shape. The stack loading magazine on the right side is provided with a lid that opens downwards on the axis. The lid has two parallel slits.

One of the main differences between the 1896 model pistols of the year and Bergmann No.1 was the location of the return spring. Previously, she was under the barrel. In the Bergmann gun model number XXUMX and later models it is placed in the cavity of the bolt. Twisted return spring inside the bolt, as if she was wearing a drummer.

On the left side of the frame the trigger has a safety lever. The fuse is fixed in two positions by means of a flat spring, fastened with a screw to the side surface of the frame.

To load the pistol, the bolt is retracted to the extreme rear position. Early models of pistols, as well as his predecessors, are not equipped with an ejector. When firing, liners are removed upward under the action of the residual pressure of powder gases, hitting the reflector's tooth. The window for removing the sleeve is located in the upper part of the receiver.

The literal translation of the surname Bergmann from German is miner. Probably for this reason as a logo on weapons an image of a bearded miner with a pickaxe appears in his hand.

An interesting feature of the Bergmann No. 2 pistol was the ability to separate the barrel from the frame provided for by the design of the weapon. The barrel was held in the frame with a single locking protrusion and a locking screw. To separate the barrel, just unscrew the locking screw, turn the barrel 90 degrees counterclockwise and remove from the receiver. Markings were applied to the barrel, receiver and frame of the gun.

In later pistols, the trigger was placed behind the store and protected with a trigger guard. The barrel of the gun now has a cylindrical section. The total length of the gun 280 mm, the barrel can be a length from 75 mm to 90 mm, the weight of the weapon 1030 gr.

The cheeks of the handles of the pistols of the second model are made of hard rubber and are fastened in the frame with a through screw. On the surface of the cheeks handle applied diamond notch. In the upper part of the cheek appeared the letter "B", symbolizing the weapon brand Bergmann.

The trigger mechanism of the gun Bergmann №2 simple, single action. When unscrewing the mounting screw, the frame cover is removed, protecting the trigger mechanism. After removing the cover, access to parts of the weapon for cleaning and maintenance is provided.

Open trigger pistol while descending strikes a protruding part of the drummer. The trigger is convenient for cocking or “safe” descent, which ensures safety when handling weapons.

Sights consist of slotted rear sight and horizontally adjustable trapezoidal front sight.

For the convenience of ottyagivaniya shutter in its tail made round protrusions with a notch. The curved lever safety lever in later versions of the Bergmann pistol No.2 is also placed under the thumb on the left side of the frame.

A pack of five rounds is installed in the magazine and pressed by the feeder. After installing the cartridges, an empty pack can be removed through the slot at the bottom of the frame. However, according to contemporaries, after removing the pack, the cartridges “dangled” a little inside the store, which sometimes led to distortions when loading weapons.

After the start of automobile production, the Bergmann plant did not have enough industrial space. Pistols began to produce under a contract with the company VC Schilling from the city of Suhl (Germany). Pistols issued under the contract did not differ in design and quality. A special feature of the marking of this weapon was the presence of inscriptions in the logo with the image of a miner. In the upper part there is an inscription “GUGGENAU”, and in the lower part the abbreviation “VCS” and the place of manufacture are “SUHL”.

The design of the later Bergmann pistols No.2 also provided for the possibility of separating the barrel from the frame.

The presence of screws and a fairly simple design made it easy to disassemble the weapon for cleaning, lubrication or repair.

On the right side in the area of the Bergmann pistol chamber No. XXUMX there is a round hole. Some researchers argue that this hole is a precaution in the event of a cartridge rupture. In my opinion, the hole acts as a shutter brake. The conical sleeve of the cartridge at the time of the shot together with the shutter under the action of powder gases moves back and at the same time, the powder gases break between the walls of the conical sleeve and the chamber in the receiver, reducing the speed of the bullet. Due to the hole, the sleeve under the action of powder gases slightly deforms towards this hole. In order to overcome the deformation and remove the sleeve gate requires more momentum and time. That is what increases the initial speed of a bullet.

At one of the weapon auctions there is a lot with a Bergmann pistol No.2, possibly in English edition, or made to order for England.

Along with the usual design and marking the gun has interesting features. So in the upper part of the cheeks of the handle there is no logo in the form of the usual letter “B”.

There is a marking text on the top of the receiver. Above the Westley Richards & Co. Case Extractor Window, Below the LONDON Window. In the upper part of the bolt, as on late Bergmann # 2 pistols, an ejector is installed.

A pistol was usually supplied with a leather holster.

Pistols Bergmann №2 rather interesting weapon and in demand among collectors. Rarely when its value at auctions is lower than 10 thousand dollars.

The accuracy of the fit and the cleanliness of the processing of all parts for that time are surprising.

      Breakthrough or not?
After all, the "Mauser" 96 was developed in 1893. Although it is also a complex mechanism, it is more aesthetic than the "Bermmann".

The gun is interesting, but why not make a cover for loading the pack on the left? So when loading it will be possible to hold the gun in his right hand, and to insert a pack of cartridges with his left.

The view is a little specific, and at first glance it’s not beautiful.
But looking closely, you notice that there is something in it. And the latest modifications are more pretty)))

And, apparently, more convenient. The trigger on the first samples, in my opinion, is very inconvenient.

A strange caliber, for such a massive pistol, only 5ml.
