Armored car Ansaldo Corni-Scognamiglio (Italy)

3
After the end of the First World War, a large number of different types of armored vehicles remained in the Italian army. Because of this, for quite a long time, the command did not show interest in promising armored cars. As a result, the number of new developments in this area has been reduced to a minimum. However, all these processes did not lead to a complete stop of work. At the end of the twenties, the development of the Corni-Scognamiglio project, also known as Nebiolo, began.

The Ansaldo Corni-Scognamiglio or Nebiolo armored car was developed on its own initiative. The design team was led by Corney and Sconamillo. According to reports, Guido Korni was at that time a process engineer at a metallurgical company. This is probably what made it possible to create a combat vehicle with the original and unusual architecture of the armored hull. Work on the project of the new armored car started, according to various data, in 1927 or 1929. Anyway, the first prototype of such a machine already existed by 1930.

It is known that Roots and Sconamillo, like many other armored car developers of that time, were forced to take a serial truck as a basis for a new combat vehicle. The base for the Corni-Scognamiglio armored vehicle was the Ansaldo truck with the wheel formula 4х4 (according to other data, 4x2). On the base chassis, equipped with an engine and transmission, it was proposed to install an armored body and other necessary units. Thus, from the point of view of the main approaches to the creation of a new vehicle, the design of the Corni-Scognamiglio armored car hardly differed from other similar developments.

The base truck was built on the hood layout and was equipped with a hp 40 gasoline engine. The front wheels of the chassis were single-pitch, rear - double. The chassis was equipped with leaf springs. Such a design of the power plant and chassis was typical for trucks of those years. In addition, it provided acceptable performance suitable for the transport of goods and use as a basis for light armored vehicles.

Apparently, the knowledge of one of the authors of the project in metal processing technologies made it possible to create an armor case of the original design, combining a relatively small weight, acceptable strength and an unusual appearance. The body design of the armored car Corni-Scognamiglio almost completely lacked smooth panels. Instead, the body consisted of several curved parts of various shapes and sizes. We can assume that the Italian engineers in their project offered an unusual version of rational booking angles.

The layout of the hull was standard for armored cars. The engine was located in a relatively small front compartment, the crew and armament were located in the large rear compartment. Separate volumes for the transport of various property, as in some other armored vehicles, were not provided.

To protect the engine, a curved armored hood close to the truncated cone shape was used. Directly in front of the engine there was a curved metal wall with louvers for ventilation. Also, air slots were provided on the side surfaces of the hood. For servicing the engine and gearbox in the hood there were hatches with hinged covers.

Inhabited hull compartment also proposed to be assembled from curved armor plates. Instead of the traditional inclined frontal sheet protecting the crew from firing from the front hemisphere, it was decided to use a special piece, the upper part of which formed a backward curved shield that covered the driver and the shooter. Behind this detail, the sides curved to the outside were fastened, behind which was a rounded feed detail. The height of the body parts was chosen so that the lower part of the sides covered the chassis frame and the units installed on it. Semicircular covers of the rear wheels were also envisaged. In the roof of the habitable compartment was a large hatch, closed with two hinged lids.

According to reports, there were three men in the combat compartment of the Ansaldo Corni-Scognamiglio armored car. In front of it were places for the driver and the shooter. Another shooter was behind them. To hit their seats, the crew had to use the doors in the sides. In addition, in some situations, the upper hatch could be used for this purpose. The crew should monitor the environment using the available tools. In the frontal details of the fighting compartment provided for a small driver's hatch with a movable lid. Such hatches in the sides were not provided.

The Korni-Skonamillo armored vehicle received standard armament for similar machines of the time - two FIAT Revelli M1914 machine guns of the 6,5 caliber mm. Such machine guns in large quantities were in stock. In addition, the army had significant reserves of ammunition for them. Having an original hull design, the armored car also differed from other similar vehicles weapons. One of the machine guns was proposed to be installed in a ball mount in the front section of the combat compartment. The shooter was thus located to the left of the driver. The second machine gun in the stowed position was inside the body, and during the battle was to be displayed outside of it. To do this, the arrow should open the sunroof and raise the turret.

Considering the experience of the First World War, the designers equipped their armored car with a system for overcoming wire obstacles. It was assumed that the combat vehicle would tear them with the help of two inclined rails installed in front of the hood.

The exact characteristics of the Ansaldo Corni-Scognamiglio armored vehicle are unknown. It can be assumed that its total length did not exceed 4,5-5 m, and the width and height were no more than 1,9-2 m. The combat weight in this case could be at the level of 3,5-4 t. With such parameters, the 40-strong engine could provide the maximum speed on the highway no more than 40-50 km / h.

It is known about the existence of only one prototype armored car. The Corni-Scognamiglio or Nebiolo machine was built no later than 1929-30 and passed the tests. Apparently, during the tests, the machine could not show significant advantages over other equipment, which affected its fate. The Italian Defense Ministry did not show interest in the proposed project, which is why the developers did not receive an order for the construction of serial equipment. A single copy of the car, according to different sources, was soon dismantled for scrap or handed over to the army. According to the latest version, the only armored vehicle of the Corni-Sconamillo design was used as a training vehicle for several years, after which it was written off and went for scrap.

Unlike its angular counterparts assembled from flat panels, it even looks elegant!

The machine is not technologically advanced. Such a body is tortured to do. Such cars were needed by hundreds.

Appearance is original. Designers have shown their talent. The machine is like a bottle lying ....
