The head of the Czech Defense Ministry intends to announce a competition for the development of weapons for JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets, which could be used for ground targets, reports RIA News with reference to the representative office of Peter Medek.
“The Czech Defense Ministry plans to announce a tender for the re-armament of the JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets so that they can act not only against air, but also ground targets. Estimated cost of the order - 427 million crowns (17,8 million dollars) "- said Medek.
In 2004, the Czech government entered into an agreement to lease 14-ti Swedish aircraft JAS-39 Gripen, spending $ 986 million on this. Another $ 50 million order went to purchase weapons for these fighters. Swedish aircraft replaced the Soviet MiG-21.
Last year, the lease was extended to 2027 g with annual payments of $ 71 million.
As Medek said, “the re-armament of the JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets will enhance the effectiveness of their operations and increase the possibility of using these aircraft in the joint operations of the air forces of the NATO member countries.” Work on the pre-planned to be completed by 2018.
