Latvian Prime Minister Laimdot Straujuma at the European Parliament ridiculed after her words about Latvia’s successful EU presidency
Laimdota Straujuma, the Prime Minister of Latvia, who opened the meeting, said that she considered the half-year presidency of Latvia in the EU as half positive for the EU and tried to list what was positive about the Latvian presidency. However, to finish reading the prepared text to Mrs. Straujume did not actually give the European deputies, who made the Latvian prime minister laugh. At that moment, when Strauyumu tried to cheer Jean-Claude Juncker, one of the European parliamentarians (Paul Nutall, United Kingdom) said (quote Delphi):
And so the European parliamentarian Kristina Morvai responded to the words of the head of the Latvian government:
Interestingly, Straujuma was rebuked not only by Euro-skeptics, but also by those who actively support European integration, and the Latvian MPs in the European Parliament themselves. Thus, the Latvian MEP Robert Zile said that he did not consider Latvia’s EU presidency satisfactory, since “they did not help Ukraine, they left Georgia disappointed, they did not identify a clear line of confrontation with Russia”.
Latvia handed over EU presidency to Luxembourg.
