Raymond Vejonis. From the chair of the Minister of Defense of Latvia to the chair of the President
48
In the Latvian Sejm, voting on the candidacy of the president was completed. The newly elected president of the country was the automatically resigned Minister of Defense of the country Raymond Vejonis. 55 people out of a hundred voted for him. It is noteworthy that the Latvian Diet needed five (!) Voting rounds for the presidential election. Even Ukraine with its three rounds during the presidential election of Viktor Yushchenko has been left far behind ... However, there is an important difference: in Latvia the constitution does not prohibit the Saeima from voting on the presidential nomination many times - one candidate must get more than 50% of votes.
Despite the fact that Vejonis demonstrated a fairly tough position as the Minister of Defense of Latvia, advocating the deployment of the American military contingent and the so-called rapid reaction force in the country, Veyonis in Latvia is considered a moderate politician. It is possible that the Latvians judge his “moderation” on the basis of the fact that in his speeches Vejonis could afford to switch to Russian. The fact is that Raymond Veyonis was born in the Pskov region of the RSFSR (born 15 on June 1966 of the year). Mother Veyonisa nationality Russian.
By education, Vejonis is a biologist, but this did not prevent him from being the head of the Latvian military department after he held the position of Minister of the Environment and Territorial (Regional) Development. Given the succession of various positions in the government of Latvia, Vejonis can be considered the most diverse politician in the country.
It should be noted that the president in Latvia is not the main figure, as the country is a parliamentary republic.
