May 29 celebrates Military Motorist's Day
The date for the holiday, as is usually the case, was not chosen by chance. It was on this day, May 29, that the first training car company was established in St. Petersburg in 1910. The main task of this company was the training of specialists for the emerging automotive parts of our army. For a fairly short time, this company has become almost the center of all autotechnical support for the troops of the Russian Imperial Army. It was she who became the prototype of the entire future organization of the automotive service and the system of auto technical support of the RF Armed Forces. And now, after 90 years, 24 February 2000, then Russian Defense Minister Igor Dmitrievich Sergeyev issued an order, according to which the date 29 May became the Day of the military motorist in honor of the first automobile company in our country.
Thus, for the first time, automotive technology in the Russian army began to appear only before the First World War. In those years, the number of cars in the army was very small, and in terms of quality they were very far from modern cars, however, the maneuverability and efficiency of this technology was already impressive at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite their small number, cars already during the First World War were recognized as a promising means of transporting goods and troops. The Russian army came out of that war, having already 22-e separate car companies, and the total fleet of vehicles of all “suits” used in the army reached approximately 10 thousand units. The change of power in the country did not change the emerging trend. On the contrary, the carried out industrialization, the creation of a fully-fledged own automobile industry allowed the Soviet Union to release a huge amount of automotive technology before the start of World War II. By the beginning of the war, the Red Army was armed with more than 270 thousands of vehicles of all types.
It was during the years of the Great Patriotic War that automotive technology revealed its full potential. Automobiles were widely used for towing artillery systems of different caliber, bringing ammunition and food, operational and tactical transportation, installation and movement of rocket artillery systems. It was cars that became the main mode of transport in almost all operational units. During the war years, the role of road transport was determined not only by the huge volumes of cargo and people transported, but also by the fact that the cars delivered fuel, ammunition, and food directly to the battlefield. At the same time, cargo delivery to the front line went in a very difficult combat situation, without stopping day or night, in difficult conditions of snowdrifts and into thaw. At the same time motoring warriors everywhere showed mass heroism and tremendous courage.
It is no coincidence that the most famous and heroic page in stories Automobile troops associated with the Great Patriotic War. We are talking about the “Road of Life”, which has become the only transport highway connecting blockade Leningrad with the mainland. This track, laid on the ice of Lake Ladoga, operated from September 1941 to March 1943. In late autumn and winter, when ice arose on the lake, military motorists broke through into the blockade city at the cost of enormous effort and unlimited risk. Sometimes cars went into the openings, formed after the bombing. But cars still went to the blockade city, saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The road of life became the route for the evacuation of the urban population, saved a significant part of the Leningrad industry, but the most important thing was that trucks carried food along this road to the city suffering from hunger and hardship.
Today, on the 85 kilometer of the Murmansk Highway near the village of Dusevo, everyone can see a commemorative stele, on which the inscription is clearly visible: “The Military motorists of the Road of Life held here in 1941-1943”. It was here in those years was the initial section of the very Road of Life, which began on the mainland and ended in the city besieged by the enemy. Today there is a massive concrete monument. On it, carriages and tourists may notice a snow-covered lump, which rushes through the ice hummocks, reared by ruptures of shells and bombs. Not far from the monument there is a stone obelisk, on which is written the inscription: “To an unknown chauffeur, who gave his life for his Motherland in the Great Patriotic War”.
After the war, military motorists faced another task — ensuring the mobility of the nuclear missile being created in the country. weapons. This task was successfully solved by Soviet designers, who created special wheeled chassis to accommodate massive RVSN complexes, many of which still have no analogues. At the same time, the development of automotive equipment and weapons went on continuously. At the same time, the level of motorization of the troops also grew, and the military vehicle itself became an integral part of all types and types of troops, a guarantee of their mobility.
Cars from the means of transportation of ammunition, weapons, food, equipment became full carriers of various weapons. Moreover, today the specialty “military motorist” is the most common in the Russian Armed Forces. Without cars today, it is simply impossible to imagine any unit. Military vehicles are in service with all types and types of troops of the armed forces of Russia, as well as various special services, being an important component in the system of armaments and military equipment. In addition, automotive equipment continues to be the most common means for mounting, transporting and towing military equipment and transporting military goods.
Only during the Great Patriotic War, cars transported more than 101 million tons of various cargoes. Cars in Afghanistan have not lost their relevance, where the so-called "threads" went through the passes to the Soviet garrisons. And during military operations on the territory of Chechnya, the shoulders of military motorists laid the main burden on the supply and transportation of military personnel. Today, the Day of the military motorist is a tribute to the historical traditions of our country, the merits of military drivers in wartime and peacetime, their great contribution to raising and strengthening the country's defense potential. Nowadays, this type of troops is part of the formations, associations of the rear of the army and fleet The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
The activities of military motorists are directly related to the evacuation of the sick and wounded, as well as the delivery of materiel and property, transportation of personnel. Almost a third of the vehicles comes out every day for making scheduled flights. For this reason, a large number of military drivers meet their professional holiday while on the road.
