The Pentagon called on Greece to continue the sanctions policy against the Russian Federation
“The theme of Russia was rising. I explained that, besides the fact that for us Russia is an allied and friendly country, with which we are bound by indestructible ties thanks to a common religion, we also have economic ties. The loss of Greece from sanctions per year is about 4 billion euros. Every year 1,5 million tourists from Russia come to us. We export agricultural products (to Russia). I explained that the European Union will not compensate Greek farmers for these issues, ”Kammenos told reporters.
“I was asked to continue the sanctions, especially in connection with the Crimea. I explained (Vormut) that the Ukrainian theme is very sensitive for Greece, since 300 thousand Greeks live in Mariupol (in the south of Donbass) and its surroundings, and these people feel safe next to the Orthodox Church, ”he said.
According to Kammenos, the parties spoke in favor of continuing cooperation and "strengthening Greece as a factor of stability in the region."
In this regard, he noted that “the Russian systems that are in service with Greece are included in NATO, the C-300 complexes guard the base in the Court (in Crete)”.
The negotiations also discussed the proposal of Athens to create a new NATO air base in Greece. Earlier it was reported that this issue was to be discussed with the head of the Pentagon, Eshtan Carter, but on the eve of the visit of Kammenos the meeting was canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances." According to political analysts, the reason for this was Washington's discontent with the close ties of the Russian Federation and Greece.
